I'd say it really depends on your working methods and what you like to get from a medium. If I tell you that they are like oils, you will try them and find ways that they are and ways that they are not. The same would be true if I told you they are like acrylics. The fact is, they are like a totally new medium, with many of the capabilities of each, and also capabilities that neither oils nor traditional acrylics possess! I love them, as you can tell from the sheer volume of work I've done with them. I love the way the color holds as it dries, retaining its vibrancy and depth. I love the way it tacks up to work layers so much faster than with oils. I love the way I can varnish and send out paintings in just a matter of weeks! I'd suggest giving them a try with a few, high quality colors. I don't know what your normal oils palette is for portraiture; it may be different from mine, but if you'd like to share it here, I'll be happy to comment on what I feel would be the best of the OPEN line to give you what you're after with a limited palette.
