I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

I have been wanting to paint this scene ever since I saw it for the first time a few years ago. No matter what time of day or season, this view in the Catskills is spectacular. My husband and I drove past a few weeks ago and I took some photos. During the big snowstorm last week, I started the painting; it seemed appropriate! I’d like to do a large format horizontal of this view also….someday.

I have a favorite field I like to paint from at Frederic Church’s Olana estate in Hudson NY. Hudson River School artist Church did a lot of sunset paintings from that area of his property. I was walking along the trail past one of his painting spots close to sunset when I caught this opening in the trees, overlooking the Hudson River through the clearing. I started to paint it on location, but couldn’t finish in time before it got dark. I snapped a bunch of photos while painting, and finally had a chance to finish it up today. I definitely want to check out this scene again at other times of day, and in other seasons. They’ve been working a lot on clearing overgrowth to bring some of these views back that have gotten overgrown as the years go by. I’m always excited to see what’s new in the landscape there!

Art to Go from the Hudson River Valley

170131 Varnished Paintings 435

Email me at JamieWG@aol.com if interested in this painting.

The other day, I varnished ten of my new Hudson River and Hudson Valley paintings. They range from scenes overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades from New York City, to Peach Lake in Brewster, and Burger Hill in Rhinebeck, up to the ledges of Sunset Rock overlooking North South Lake (beloved Hudson River School site), and the Catskill Mountains. Some of these were started on location and finished up in the studio, while others were painted from my photos and other plein air paintings. They represent much of the terrain I’ve traversed over the past six months or so, in search of the best of what the Hudson Valley has to offer my muse.

The varnishing process takes time to set up, so I like to do large batches at a time. Usually that means about 17-20 paintings. Lately I’ve worked on some larger pieces, which has lowered my production in terms of quantity. Working on those big paintings has meant that the little ones tend to hang out in the studio longer, before they get photographed, varnished, and up on my website. As the weeks go by, they get more touchups and adjustments as I see them. I think this has led to an overall increase in quality. As I look at this set of paintings now, I’m really happy with what I’ve achieved in this batch. Here’s a photo that you can click on, and you can then zoom in on specific paintings.

The large, framed painting of the Hudson River and Palisades is already spoken for, and out the door. (I do miss that one already! But there is a smaller version of it available among the others, and I can always do another large one for you on a commission basis.) The smaller works above it are all available and in search of new homes. If you see one that interests you, send me off an email (or comment below), and I’ll get back to you with more information. They will all be posted individually as I adjust the single images. Some of those have already been posted with prices, and are visible by going to my home page and scrolling down.

This Hudson River and Palisades painting is another scene from Wave Hill Gardens in Riverdale, New York. I recently posted one I’d painted without the wall in the scene; this one contains the stone wall that is so indicative of the Wave Hill location. I wanted to see if I’d like it better with the wall or without, but ended up liking both of them!
Below is an image you can click on for a slightly larger view of the painting.

If you’d like a larger painting, just ask! I’m always happy to do larger pieces on a commission basis of this scene or a special location of your choosing.

I’m fortunate to live by a lake with a great sunrise view. This was painted on a morning with a haze over the lake, creating spectacular colors as the sun came up. It glowed yellow-orange as it emerged above the tree line, casting warmth and light upon the whole scene.

I just brought this painting over to RiverWinds Gallery today, along with five others, for their grand re-opening celebration. The reception for the new show will be this Saturday, January 14, from 5-8pm. The address is 172 Main Street, Beacon NY. If you cannot make it to the opening, the gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6pm.

This painting was done from a photo that I took at Innisfree Garden in Millbrook NY. It’s a scene that lends itself to many different approaches in light, color, and atmosphere. In this case, I used an analogous palette of mostly yellows, golds and earthy orange tones to cast a warm glow on an impending weather event, with a path to lead the eye into the painting.

This is one of the many stunning, old trees at Olana, home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. This tree is right near the site of Church’s old studio. I went on a drawing/painting spree with trees this year, and especially enjoyed working in these warm sepia colors on toned paper.

This drawing is one of a series of three trees, all done in the same sepia tones. The other two will be posted over the next two days. They can be purchased individually, or subtract 20% if you’d like to have all three to hang as a triptych. They are framed with identical ivory mats and gorgeous custom gold frames, and make a beautiful grouping in a classic style.

This weathered pine leans over North South Lake, nestled in the Catskill Mountains. I loved its character, and the opportunity to draw in the company of friends on a beautiful day by the lake.

A few days ago, I posted a painting of a tree from Olana, titled Cedar Overlooking the Hudson. This is a drawing I did of the same tree. As I said previously, I can’t seem to get enough of this one!

Unbelievable as it may seem, this is my fifth artistic rendition of this tree overlooking the Hudson River at Olana. I think after this, I’ll just start to title them by number as a series! Like the others, I painted it on location at Olana, home of Hudson River School artist, Frederic Church.

I had this cheery, red visitor in my yard. Cardinals are impossible to resist in any setting or season! The cherry and gold framing is included in the price of this painting, since it’s so difficult to find nice oval frames that can fit a particular painting! For these framed bird portraits, I cut the panels to fit the frames before I painted them!

This painting was a long time in the planning! Several years ago, I went to a Hudson River overlook at Bear Mountain very early in the morning. It is on the western side of the river, so the sun was coming in toward me. The light streaming from the east silhouetted the land forms, and warm color streamed toward me from the eastern sky, reflecting in the water. I did a 5×7″ plein air, attempting to catch the fleeting light and color, while knowing it would all be gone in ten minutes. You can see that painting at this link.

Since then, I’ve done a few paintings based on that study, featuring the view over Iona Island and the warm, early morning light. The one at this link was a 6×9″ color study in golden hues. Another 6×9″ color study, with the orange hues as in the larger painting featured in this post, is currently at RiverWinds Gallery. I liked them both and it was hard to decide which one to go with for the large painting. In the end I decided to use the copper tones, building multiple layers of warm glaze colors over a monochrome underpainting.

Last year, my husband and I drove through the Catskills beside the Schoharie Creek. At every possible pull-off from the road, we got out and explored the views. This vantage point was one of my favorites from that expedition. I loved the way the transparency in the water made all the rock forms visible, then turned to reflections farther off. The greens from the trees on the left also cast some reflection into the water. I was awestruck by the variety of color and types of light. I think I need to do a large version of this too. It’d be awesome as a 20×30 or 24×36!

This painting is from a series of small works that I did as color studies for large paintings. It was painted with many transparent and opaque layers. A scene from Innesfree Gardens provided the inspiration for the painting, though numerous liberties were taken in the translation from location to photo and then to the painting. It is so representative of the beautiful scenery that surrounds us here in the Hudson Valley.

This adorable Hermit Thrush was posing next to our driveway when my husband and I went out for a walk. I stopped to take pictures, and she gave me a bunch of poses, turning so that I could photograph her from every angle! She was the cutest and most cooperative bird model I ever encountered. I’m sure I’ll be doing more paintings of her!

I cut the Ampersand panels for the bird paintings into ovals with a scroll saw, to fit these cherry and gold, oval frames. The oval shape seems to suit these bird portraits perfectly. I didn’t think anybody would be able to find frames to fit, so selling them already framed makes the most sense, and means that it’s ready to hang on your wall right out of the box.

Many years ago, I went sketching with a friend along the Hudson River in Newburgh. It was a cold winter day, so we found a parking lot with a river view, and sketched from our cars with the heat running! There were geese swimming in the frigid, but still open water. I always wanted to do a large painting of this scene, with the bright sunlight streaming from the south and reflecting in the water. I decided to do this painting in blues and violets to give it the cold winter feeling I had on that day, while adding the violets to keep the color harmony, yet expand the color range.

This was painted from private property overlooking the Hudson River in autumn on a hazy, overcast day. I ended up getting rained out, and finished it in the studio! It’s a view overlooking the northern section of the Hudson Highlands from Garrison. The scene takes in West Point, Cold Spring, Beacon, and beyond. I felt like I was up in the clouds!

I wanted this Hudson River painting to depict the colors of a summer day on vacation, and to take me to that “happy place” with all the time in the world, and without cares. I think I captured the warm Caribbean feel I was after, while maintaining the strong sense of the Hudson that the mountains of the Hudson Highlands provide. The photo for this painting was taken out on the river near Beacon.

I did a few color studies for a large painting, and this one came out so beautifully that I decided to finish it off and offer it for sale. The colors are so much more subtle and beautiful in real life. I love this scene overlooking the Hudson River and Iona Island from Bear Mountain, and have painted it in many seasons and different mediums, at different times of day. Over the weekend, I visited The Stone Church in Dover Plains with my husband. It was such an exciting location that I couldn’t wait to paint there. I went back today to capture this vantage point. This Great Blue Heron usually sticks around for the whole winter. I took a bunch of photos of him from my kitchen window, and painted him in a palette of cool winter blues, huddled against the cold. The painting developed a few small ripples in the process of wet-mounting the paper to a board after the painting was completed. With the painting hanging on the wall, you have to really look carefully to be able to even see them. With that disclosure, I am offering The Big Chill at a huge discount of more than 50%. In spite of the minor flaw, the painting is beautiful and is totally archival. It is varnished to be framed without glass, like an oil painting.

This fall painting was done standing along the lakeshore at the DEC North South Lake Campground. There were fisherman and kayakers, as well as changing light, especially since I had to make a return trip to finish the painting. But the biggest change of all was when a DEC work crew came to trim the foliage I was painting! I found a wonderful park in the mountains for walking, photography and painting. It’s called Windham Path. Whoever designed it kept the path winding around clusters of trees, through fields to magical mountain views, and alongside streams. The path is gravel and constructed with great drainage, so even after a rain, it’s not muddy. My husband and I had some great walks here, and I went back in late fall with my paints. I’m sure I’ll be painting much more of it next season, but I was fortunate to have come across it at peak foliage time! Below is an image you can click on for a larger view of the painting:

This autumn painting was done from one of my favorite spots along the Hudson — Little Stony Point in Cold Spring. A short walk through the woods is rewarded by a sandy beach facing some of the most beautiful scenery along the river. This view faces west toward Crow’s Nest Mountain. This large, colorful, splashy acrylic was painted on site at Olana, overlooking the Hudson River. It’s probably my favorite Hudson River view, and I’ve painted it on location a number of times in smaller formats. I always think about how many Hudson River School painters stood in this very spot, gazing at the distant Catskill Mountains while trying to capture the light and scenery here.

I didn’t have a setup to photograph large works very well until recently, so this large spring scene hasn’t yet made its debut on my website! It’s a perfect size for over a sofa, mantle or dining room wall.

What could be better than painting with a good friend along the Hudson River on a beautiful, unseasonably warm day in late fall? Not much! I always enjoy the view of Storm King and the Hudson from the western vantage point of this park. Sometimes I think that plein air painting is just an excuse to get out and enjoy the scenery!
