My husband and I were out for a walk with our cameras and ran into some friends down by the river at Madam Brett Park. As we were talking, the sun streamed out from behind a cloud, and the distant gold lit up the horizon, silhouetting the deep blue mountains. What a sight! I was so glad I had my camera with me, and painted this from a photo.

It felt so wonderful today to have sun and warm temperatures! I headed over to Beacon to test drive my new SunEden easel setup at Tioronda Falls, in Madam Brett Park. That’s Mount Beacon in the painting. This is Fishkill Creek, very near where it empties out into the Hudson River. The falls were absolutely exquisite with all the recent rain we’ve had, and the SunEden performed quite well. It certainly doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of my Soltek, but it only weighs three and a half pounds, and can support a large canvas! It has a shelf to set down a palette (or you can use the shelf itself as a palette) and a box that clamps on to hold all my paints and brushes. It will be great for those out-of-the-way painting locations that aren’t so close to the car. Everything fits in a backpack and it is light, light, light!

I loved painting this scene. Definitely going back soon!

There is a huge amount of water in Fishkill Creek these days, following the heavy rains we’ve had here in the east, combined with the snow melt. Beacon Falls is located just a couple of miles before the creek empties out into the Hudson River. There’s so much water that it’s traveling along a side spillway, and you can’t even see rock where it’s cascading over the falls.

I paint a lot of waterfalls and they usually don’t give me much trouble, but I have to say that this scene presented me with a real struggle! I’m going to try to get back there to do a couple more with different compositions and in different sizes. It’s a fabulous location, and I just love a good challenge!

If you haven’t been over to my new site for my sketches at http://hudsonvalleysketches.blogspot.com, please go take a look! For those of you who are subscribed to receive my paintings in your email, you can also subscribe over there if you’d like to continue to receive my sketches in your email. You won’t be getting any more mail than you do already — just when I do an oil painting it will come from the Hudson Valley Painter address, and when I do a sketch it will come from the Hudson Valley Sketches address.

It was a beautiful evening on Friday along the Hudson River in Beacon, NY. My painting buddy, Sue, went with me to Long Dock after we left Boscobel, and I did this quarter sheet watercolor before sunset. Facing Cold Spring, this cluster of trees was leaning toward Breakneck Ridge, creating a wonderful composition.

I love my new Plein Air Pro watercolor easel. Since it has the little shelf, I’m thinking I can probably use it for smaller oil and acrylic paintings too, though I haven’t tried that yet. Here’s a photo of the scene and the easel:

This is another painting that was started on location and completed in the studio this week. I showed the work in progress with an image of the scene in a previous post. The humped peak in the painting is Breakneck Ridge. The marsh is where Fishkill Creek empties out into the Hudson River.

When I brought the painting back to the studio and put it up on the easel to add the finishing touches, I pulled up all my photo references from this location. I’d gone there several times during the falll, so I had photos from much of the season. I decided to go back a few weeks in time to when there was more fall in the air and leaves on the trees. I think it added a lot to the painting to be able to fill out that foreground tree.

This painting was started on location and finished up in the studio. It was one of those cold, overcast, pre-winter days that generally lack excitement, but the falls were spectacular and made all the drama.

Below is a photo of the painting showing what was completed on location. I tried my best to capture all the information I’d need to finish it in the studio. There wasn’t really much left to do—mostly filling in some background color and tweaking a bit here and there.

Yellow Oxide Transparent (RGH)
Cadmium Scarlet (Winsor Newton)
Permanent Carmine (RGH)
Prussion Blue (RGH)
Ultramarine Blue (RGH)
Cadmium Yellow Primrose (RGH)
Titanium White (RGH & WN Griffin mixed half and half)

This painting was done mostly on location, with a few tweaks in the studio to finish it up. It is a scene from Long Dock (Beacon Point Park) along the Hudson River. I loved the rusty-orange trees against the distant blues of Mt. Beacon, and the brighter greens of the foliage that hadn’t yet realized fall had arrived.

This is a painting that I started last fall at a great new park in Beacon called Long Dock. I went back today to finally finish it! Long Dock, or “Beacon Point Park”, is on a peninsula that juts out into the Hudson River. The sky was gorgeous, and the fall leaves here were in their peak of fall beauty.

I painted with friends last week at an overlook on the west side of the Hudson River. The scene was very dramatic as the filtered sunlight fought through the haze, bursting onto the river in patches of yellow light.

I’ve been painting, painting, painting lately, but haven’t had a chance to get all of these photographed yet. More to come during the week….Stay tuned!
