I went out to the lakeshore very early this morning to try to grab some morning color before a thunderstorm moved in. I was there just in time, because it started to rain just as I was putting the painting away!

There’s a little bridge that goes over the east end of Titicus Reservoir in North Salem, New York. It’s quite narrow, with a fair amount of traffic, and definitely not a good spot to try to set up an easel! The western view at sunset from that location is beautiful, so from time to time I make a quick stop to take photo references when it looks like the sunset will be especially inviting. This was painted from a photo taken on one of those evenings.

There are several brands that I use pretty much interchangeably, but I thought I’d pull out mostly Williamsburgh paints for a change. My palette for this painting was:
Cadmium Yellow Medium (Williamsburgh)
Cadmium Red (Williamsburgh)
Red Oxide Transparent (Rembrandt)
Cerulean Blue (Williamsburgh)
Ultramarine Blue (Williamsburgh)

This was painted on one of those gorgeous spring days when everybody should be outside painting! I went to Tilly Foster Farm to take in the beautiful view of the pond and rolling hills.

I used a wash of raw sienna to start off this painting, and a little Liquin Fine Detail to help it start tacking up. The painting was done with a limited palette:

Rembrandt Permanent Red Medium
Winsor Newton old tube of Ultramarine Deep (now French Ultramarine)
Winsor Newton Raw Sienna
Winsor Newton Titanium White

This little, old rowboat resides at the shore of my neighbor’s farm. I went on Monday to paint there. I think there are many paintings to be had at this spot! I’m looking forward to exploring this scene with the boat at least a couple more times in watercolor, and can also envision it in other mediums and seasons.

This was painted from a photo taken at the North Salem Open Land Foundation on Baxter Road, one of my favorite places to stroll and paint.

This painting was done from a photograph I took at Titicus Reservoir in North Salem, New York, just as the sun was setting. I was hoping for more spectacular colors, but a big cloud front moved in, providing a different kind of drama that was more about mood and less about color.

I used just Transparent Red Oxide, Ultramarine Blue, and Titanium White for this painting. I contemplated putting in more color, but sometimes less is more. I think this was one of those occasions.

This is another sunrise view from my living room window. I really enjoy painting “plein air” from there in real time, but this one was done from a photo I took one beautiful winter morning.

This was painted here in the Hudson Valley, by the lake next to my studio. I was so excited about getting out to paint that I ended up getting up at 4:30, while it was still pitch black. I dawdled at the computer and then all of a sudden realized it was already getting light out! Hoping to not miss my opportunity, I raced out the door just in time to catch this dramatic lighting on the lake and in the sky.

My palette for this painting was Hansa yellow opague, Ultramarine blue, Phthalo blue, Napthol red light, and Titanium white.

This painting has been a long time in process. It started out with a small monochrome study, followed by a color study, both completed on location. I then did an intermediate stage in the studio at 1/2 each dimension of the large painting. (Intermediate size was 12×18″.)

After a day and a half of working on the large painting in the studio, I took it back to the location a week or so later to work on it outside, where I could gather more information directly from the source once again. I felt lots of things were improved after that session of on site painting, but it still wasn’t finished.

I’ve put in more time on it here and there as it’s sat on the big easel in my studio, and I think I can finally call it finished! Here it is up on my studio easel during today’s session, with the studies next to it for reference. The studies are a progression toward the finished painting, but as you can see, I changed things that I wanted to improve upon in each version.
