------------------------------------------ If you haven't seen the two-DVD set, "The Impressionists", you don't know what you're missing!

    the-impressionists.jpg

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

This is another sunrise view from my living room window. I really enjoy painting “plein air” from there in real time, but this one was done from a photo I took one beautiful winter morning.

This was painted here in the Hudson Valley, by the lake next to my studio. I was so excited about getting out to paint that I ended up getting up at 4:30, while it was still pitch black. I dawdled at the computer and then all of a sudden realized it was already getting light out! Hoping to not miss my opportunity, I raced out the door just in time to catch this dramatic lighting on the lake and in the sky.

My palette for this painting was Hansa yellow opague, Ultramarine blue, Phthalo blue, Napthol red light, and Titanium white.

Morning at Tilly Foster Farm — large oil painting

This painting has been a long time in process. It started out with a small monochrome study, followed by a color study, both completed on location. I then did an intermediate stage in the studio at 1/2 each dimension of the large painting. (Intermediate size was 12×18″.)

After a day and a half of working on the large painting in the studio, I took it back to the location a week or so later to work on it outside, where I could gather more information directly from the source once again. I felt lots of things were improved after that session of on site painting, but it still wasn’t finished.

I’ve put in more time on it here and there as it’s sat on the big easel in my studio, and I think I can finally call it finished! Here it is up on my studio easel during today’s session, with the studies next to it for reference. The studies are a progression toward the finished painting, but as you can see, I changed things that I wanted to improve upon in each version.

Mary’s Boat at Sunset

This is a painting of my friend Mary’s boat, out on the lake beside our house at sunset. The clouds were especially spectacular that evening. It is painted on unstretched canvas, with artist grade oil paints, and mounted on rag board to give it a permanent, artist grade, archival support.

What was I thinking? I sat in the blistering hot sun at Tilly Foster Farm for hours to paint this. Even with my large beach umbrella for shade, the heat was too much. When I was finished, I walked over to where my smart friends were painting, under the shade of a huge tree! It felt 20 degrees cooler there. The great subject matter of this old truck was more than I could resist, even in the heat. The hay bales were glistening in the morning sun, and the large barrel of flowers provided the final, beautiful touch.

My palette for this painting:
Naples Yellow
Cadmium Yellow Primrose
Pyrrole Red
Transparent Red Oxide
Ultramarine Blue
Phthalo Blue

Hudson Valley Journeys — North Salem Solo Show

071108-Path-Through-the-OLF-Done-600

Tomorrow I will be hanging my solo show titled Hudson Valley Journeys at the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library in North Salem, NY. It will run from tomorrow through September 29. Please join me for a luncheon reception at the library on Sunday, September 13 from 12:30-2:30pm. The address is 276 Titicus Road, North Salem.

I hope many of my viewers will be able to get over there to see the show. If you cannot make it to the reception, you can see the show anytime the library is open. Here is a link to the library hours when you will be able to see the show.

The painting above is the one that appeared on the card for the show. It is a view of the beautiful Open Land Foundation property along Baxter Road in North Salem. It is available for purchase at the library or through my website at this link.

All of the paintings in that show are custom framed and also available through my website. If you click the Category on the right for “Brewster and North Salem”, you will see that some of those paintings are now listed as custom framed. Those are the ones in the show. (Works not in the show are unframed.) I do not generally offer framed works through my website, so if you’re interested in something ready to hang on that favorite wall, this is a great opportunity to pick up a custom framed piece at a great price.

This was painted from a home high up on a hilltop in North Salem, New York. There were beautiful views of distant hills to the west, but when I saw these bright pink flowers against the dark foliage, I knew I’d found my painting spot!

This is one of those situations when I used the scene for inspiration, but made many changes for the sake of color and composition. Below is a photo of the scene, so that you can see what I was working with. Using elements found in the landscape, I arranged them to create my painting. I removed part of the fence so that we could enter the scene, painted in a path to draw us into the composition, gave some leaves to the bare tree, and warmed up some of the color.

Here’s a pic of my setup with the painting and the scene.

This is painted from a photo I took on a morning with an amazing sunrise. I saw the turquoise and pink sky, threw on my jeans, shirt and coat, and dashed out to the lakeshore to take pictures. At 16×20, this is a nice size for that special wall. In spite of the brilliant colors, it has that wonderfully serene feel to it that only a spectacular sunrise can bring.

I liked this painting from the time I brought it home from the painting spot by the lake. However, I never varnished it because I felt it needed more warmth in the water and foliage colors. I touched it up with the addition of some pinks, oranges, and transparent red oxide glazes. I am a lot happier with it now! What do you think? The original is below for comparison.

080910-willow-at-the-point-16x12-600

I’m one of those lucky plein air painters who has a default painting location right outside the studio door. In previous years, I painted here by the lake quite a bit. This year I seem to be traveling more and painting at home less. I think it may have something to do with the fact that my favorite tree to paint was decimated by a storm during the winter. Somehow, painting here just isn’t the same without that tree, but it made me turn my attention today to a different tree.

This little point juts out from the shoreline, with a charming willow tree at the end. I love painting willows, with their graceful clusters of leafy branches, and subtle color and value shifts. The wonderful early morning light and serenity made me realize that I need to paint here more often!

Little Red Boat at Daybreak

I set out before sunrise this morning, hoping for another dramatically-colored sunrise by the lakeshore. Although the colors didn’t cooperate in terms of high chroma, the beautiful, subtle shifts in value and color made the red boat spring to life in its more subdued surroundings.

I toned the panel a light pink color with Rembrandt Permanent Red Medium, then worked a lot with soft color changes within a limited value range. I used only three colors plus white for this one, and for yesterday’s painting too:
Williamsburg Cadmium Yellow Light
Rembrandt Permanent Red Medium
Utrecht Ultramarine Blue Deep

I’m sorry that I don’t yet have my Paypal buttons reinstalled, so please just email me for a Paypal invoice if you are interested in purchasing this painting. I hope to have the buttons up again before the end of the week. Since my laptop died, I wasn’t able to work on it over the weekend! Now I’m up and running again with a great MacBook Pro.

This boat belongs to my friend Mary. It’s so convenient for me that she has her boat moored out here, as it gives me a wonderful painting subject!

I just finished preparing a batch of 65 panels using a new sealer, different gesso, and slightly different application process. This painting is the first one from the batch and WOW, I just love the way these panels are taking the paint!

Sailboat on the Lake miniature oil painting

SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I ran out of varnish and had to drive all the way to Norwalk CT to get the kind I wanted! I spend the remainder of the day varnishing paintings and then priming panels…..No painting for the weary!

So, today’s painting is an older work that I enjoy a lot, which has not been shown here. It’s a 3×2″ miniature painting of my friend’s boat out on the lake. The painting is already framed in this elegant, gold wood frame. It is the perfect accessory for a side table, coffee table, dresser top, or shelf.

I’ve been so eager to work with watercolor this week, perhaps because of all the rain we’ve been having. This is painted from a photo of a tree out on a peninsula on the lake here at home. I loved the reflections of the colors and tree in the water, and the large, brooding clouds way above.

The other day, I saw these boats all lined up along the shoreline here by the lake and couldn’t wait to get out and do a wide-format painting of them. The clouds broke for a few hours today, so I dashed out during my window of opportunity. With rain this morning and more rain coming in later, I lucked out with a perfect midday break in the weather.

I didn’t feel like straying far from home today, so I set my chair outside in the yard and took in the first blooms of spring under the stand of evergreens. My little dog kept me company, the temps were in the high 40s, and the sun was shining. It’s hard to ask an early spring day for more than that! I’ve been peeking at these hyacinths from the window for a week or so, and I’m glad I got to paint them before they disappeared for another year.

A couple of years ago, there was an amazing sunrise over the lake on a winter morning. I grabbed my camera, dashed out the door, and took hundreds of photos for future paintings. Here is another painting of the “Majestic Morning” series, just off the easel.

My palette for this painting was:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Lemon
Cadmium Yellow Pale
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Raw Sienna
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red
Permanent Rose
Cerulean Blue
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue Deep
Ivory Black
Viridian

I didn’t really need all those colors to do this painting, but since I’d put them all out on my palette, what the heck! I dipped into everything.

The trees behind my house light up bright orange beside Peach Lake Brook for about 15 minutes before sunset, reflecting strongly in the water, with the rest of the scene in shadow. I’ve been wanting to paint this view at this time of day forever! The strong color is fleeting, so this one was painted from a photo.

This is a painting done from a photo I took while out for an evening stroll with my husband in winter. It was done with a limited palette of just four colors and white. I love the way this turned out, with the dramatic light, contrast of the snow and branches, and harmonized color. It’s one of my personal favorite paintings.

This is my favorite tree along the lakeshore here. It turns this bright crimson color in fall, and I love the twists and turns of the trunk.

I painted this with my new little pochade box! It is the Guerrilla Painter Thumbox with the palette extension and watercolor palette. I filled the watercolor palette up with oil paints. That palette gets covered with the mixing palette, so the paints stay wet and it’s really fast to set up. Here’s a picture of the new box with a progress image of the painting:

This painting was started on dull, dreary, rainy Sunday. It was lifeless and boring, so I went back to Tilly Foster Farm this morning when the sun was shining to “turn on the lights”. I like it much better now as a happy day painting!
