I’ve used this color combination in acrylics and watercolor, but I think this is my first go at it in oils. It’s interesting how the mood of the painting is affected by the bright crimson underpainting. Even though almost all of that color is covered over by other paint colors, the air still breathes the warmth of the strong pinky-violet undertones.

Hudson River School artist Frederic Church’s Olana estate remains one of my favorite vistas along the river. I never get tired of painting from there. It seems that when I do tire of a certain view there, a dozen more magical scenes from the property seem to appear!

A number of viewers have written to me recently, commenting on the fact that I haven’t posted any paintings for awhile, and wondering if I fell off the face of the earth! Actually, I’ve been painting up a storm. Winter brings changes with it, and I do lots of experiments with assorted media, commissioned paintings, and charge through countless pages in my sketchbook, using ink and watercolors, visiting places like the Bronx Zoo, Maritime Aquarium, pet stores, Adams Fairacre Farms in Wappingers — any warm indoor location that will have me, with something interesting to draw or paint! This was painted on location at Boscobel Restoration, on a fall day that was heavily overcast and chilly, following a night of rain. By early afternoon, the sky had brightened and skies were clearing. The heavy cloud cover continued to lift and reveal wispy clouds and unseasonably warm temperatures. Of course I couldn’t keep chasing the light all day, so I tried to freeze the moment when the sun was breaking through the clouds and casting yellow streaks on the Hudson River off in the distance.

It’s hard to convey texture in a digital image, but here’s a closeup of a section of the painting:

What I really enjoy about the texture in the painting is that it is not visible from afar. It’s only when you get close to the painting that you suddenly see a whole new landscape of texture on the surface!

I spent a very chilly morning along the Hudson River last week. I did a lot of sketches and took a ton of photos. It was worth braving the cold! This tug was part of the river traffic that entertained me that morning, with the Palisades looming in the background, and the glistening fall foliage.

It’s been so gorgeous out these past few days! I drove down to Hastings-on-Hudson to paint along the waterfront. I thought I’d be there painting alone, but three friends decided to join me and we all had a wonderful time enjoying one of these last amazing, warm fall days.

Rockwood is such a beautiful place to paint in fall. I don’t get down here often, so I try to make the most of it when I can! Often the boats that go by are too far out to show a reflection, or the water is too rough to see it. But this one cast a shimmering image on the water. I was telling some visitors to the park that I’d been waiting for a sailboat to go by so I could pop it into the painting. We all looked up and there it was!

I hiked into Constitution Marsh on the Hudson River while the skies were overcast, but they didn’t stay that way for long. Keeping up with changing light as I painted was a real challenge! I brought just my oil paints and my Guerrilla Painter Thumbox in a backpack. That’s about all one could comfortably carry in over the hill and along the trails and boardwalks.

Every fall brings with it the opportunity to paint Constitution Marsh on the Hudson River while it’s in the brief bright red stage. I try never to miss that chance! I never tire of this fall scene. I’ve painted it this time of year in every size from 5×7″ up to 24×36″, but it always appears fresh and exciting, and just as challenging each time!

I painted this on location at Hudson River School painter Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, in Hudson, New York. It is one of the best sunset spots, and many visitors come late in the day just to see the sun setting over the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. On the evenings when the sky doesn’t light up with bright colors, the beauty of the late day light effects still makes it worth the trip up the hillside.

We had a really moody day on Plum Point last week, with the sun peeking in and out of clouds and an occasional threatening-looking cloud passing overhead. This is the view looking south through the Hudson Highlands, with Storm King Mountain on the right side. You can see the cut in the mountain where Route 9W winds around it. Fortunately the rain held off and I got to not only finish my painting, but complete a sketch for The Sketchbook Project 2012 too!
