If you haven't seen the two-DVD set, "The Impressionists", you don't know what you're missing!

    the-impressionists.jpg

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

I was painting by a pond one day and these adorable ducks were following me around everywhere! They posed for a number of fabulous photos, which begged to be painted. I thought this one would make a great holiday gift, so I painted it as a long format miniature. It can be set on its easel on a tabletop or mantle, or hung on a wall. Since it’s on gallery wrapped canvas and painted on all sides, it doesn’t need a frame.

Below is an image that you can click on to see the painting a bit larger:

This is another Mini Monet from my “Jamie’s Jewels” line of miniature paintings. Since these tiny gems are so challenging to paint, they are done on a commission basis only. Be sure to make your requests soon (Like, yesterday!) if you want them for the holidays. They can be done based on any painting in my available or sold inventories, or of any painting in the public domain, or a scene of your choosing if you can provide a photo.

This one is being shown without a frame, since my handy client is making his own miniature frame! Most I frame myself. The paintings are sent in gold gift boxes, and I provide a miniature easel with each purchase.

Backlit Meadow in Fall Miniature

3×4.25″, Watercolor on Arches 140# Rough paper
$100.00 plus free shipping and insurance within the Continental United States. Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com for International purchases or with any questions.

This painting is a miniature version of the one I posted yesterday. Watercolorist David Taylor got me into doing these tiny watercolor sketches as quick-captures of a scene, or to warm up before embarking on a larger version. They give the artist a chance to test drive some ideas and different compositions, without taking up a huge amount of time. If something’s not going to work, better to find out with less time invested! It also lets us explore ways of making improvements and testing color combinations. I’ve become quite hooked on these! They look charming matted and framed, and hung on a wall or set on a little table easel.

This is a miniature watercolor of the scene I posted yesterday. Everybody has room for one of these little gems. They look charming either framed and hung, or displayed on tabletop easels. This was also painted on location at Frederic Church’s Olana estate, a home of the Hudson River School movement.

This is the second in a series of four small watercolor paintings of Mount Merino, painted on location at Olana (home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Church). It is double matted to pop right into a standard 5×7″ frame.

I did a series of small watercolor paintings from Olana over the past week. The home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church is a place near and dear to my heart. I’ve been wanting to paint this hillside view toward Mount Merino for a long time! It was done from one of the carriage roads on the property. I was drawn to the way the near hillside is illuminated in the sunlight, framed by Mount Merino behind it.

This painting has been double matted so that you can pop it into any standard 5×7″ frame.

Here’s another of my postage-stamp-size miniature Monet Impressionist paintings. They are so much fun to paint, and I always learn something new about the chosen “master” when I do one of these. I wish you could all see it in person. So much is lost in these digital representations of artwork!

These miniatures are done on a commission basis only, so if you’re interested in one, just email me at JamieWG@aol.com.

Below is another image of the painting. This picture is about twice the size of the actual painting:

Here’s another of my tiny “Micro Master” paintings, this one after a Monet favorite. Figures are especially difficult in this diminutive size, but I love the challenge! The quarter in the photo is for size reference, so you can see how small these really are.

These miniatures are so difficult and time consuming that I only do them on a commission basis. It’s a labor of love! If you either have a favorite painting by a Master in mind or would like me to choose one for you as a commission, you can email me at JamieWG@aol.com.

La Troupe After Tolouse-Lautrec

About 2×2.5″, including frame
Golden Fluid Acrylics
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

The image above is probably showing this painting at larger than real life on your screen! This is postage stamp size. The painting itself is about 1.25×1.75″. The quarter is there for size reference. I love Tolouse-Lautrec, and it so much fun to do these Micro Master miniature versions! I had to do some editing and use my own artistic license for this teeny tiny size. For instance, I’d never have been able to do the lettering that was on the painting in this itty bitty format!

These tiny master renditions are generally done only on a commission basis, so if you’ve got one in mind that you’d like to order, just drop me an email at JamieWG@aol.com.

The quarter in the image above is to show you how tiny this painting is! I think this is the most challenging miniature I’ve done to date, though it was also really fun to work on this!

These little Monet interpretations are so much fun to paint! This was my first go at one of his many Haystack paintings. I wish you could all see it in person, because it looks so much better than this digital representation!

These framed miniatures come with a mini easel to set them on, or can be hung salon style from a gold thread or ribbon. They are sent in gold gift boxes with gold bows to complete the “gem” effect!

While there’s still time to ship before the holidays, I’ll be bumping up some of my favorite smaller, unsold works that would be wonderful holiday gifts for that special someone. Give the gift of art — a celebration of beauty and creative inspiration. Purchase two and receive free shipping!

Some time ago, there was a fantastic rainbow over the lake just before sunset. I grabbed my camera and ran outside to get some photo references. This was painted from one of the photos I took. The light and colors were almost too amazing to believe.

This miniature is shipped in a gold gift box, with a gold bow. The easel is included too! It makes the ideal present for any art lover, and looks great set on a small table or shelf. Quarter is shown for size reference.

Itty Bitty Version of a Monet Sunrise

1.25×1.5″ (excluding frame)
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

These Monet Minis are so much fun to paint! I loved working with the orange and blue complements he used for his sunrise painting. Since it’s so tiny, I bumped up the saturation a bit in my version. Postage stamp size paintings tend to disappear if there’s not enough color and contrast! Here’s a closer view:

101209-Sunrise-After-Monet-quarter-425

These tiny copies of works by famous painters tend to get done on a commission basis, so if you’ve got a favorite you’d like done that is now within the public domain, let me know. They are sold framed and with a small easel stand, and come in a tiny gold gift box with ribbon.

Red Poppies After Monet — Miniature Painting

Golden Fluid Acrylics, 2″ x 1.75″, including frame
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

This is the third time I’ve painted this little Monet copy of Red Poppies at Argenteuil in miniature format. I love doing these little jewels! There are a couple more I want to do soon. They’re such a nice change from my larger pieces. I take them as far as I can with just my glasses on, then switch to a lit magnification lens to finish, all with teeny tiny brushes!

These miniatures are always sent out in gold gift boxes and make elegant gift items for that special occasion. You can commission a scene of your choosing, a scene from one of my other paintings, or a copy of an Old Master that is no longer under copyright protection.

Love is a Canvas

Posted by Jamie on February 7th, 2010

Love is a canvas, furnished by Nature, and embroidered by imagination — Voltaire

090203-love-is-a-canvas-3-quarter-425

4×2″, Golden Acrylics on gallery wrapped canvas, miniature easel included
The quote above is inscribed around the stretcher bars on the back of the canvas. Quarter is in the image for size reference only.
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I immediately thought of this quote when I set up to do this painting. The canvas is gallery wrapped, and the image is painted around the sides of the canvas, so that it can be viewed from all sides. The miniature easel will be shipped with the painting.

It is so difficult to get good photographs of miniatures. They always look much better in person. This one has a fairly dark background with some sheen, so it was impossible to get rid of all the glare from the lights when I took the photo. Here’s another image of it, with a Coke can for additional size reference:

090203-love-is-a-canvas-1-425

For such a little painting, I used a tremendous palette! Colors:
Cadmium Yellow Primrose
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red Light
Pyrrole Red
Cadmium Red Medium
Alizarin Crimson hue
Cerulean Blue hue
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Oxide of Chromium
Jenkins Green
Titanium White
I had a few other colors out there as well, but the ones listed above were the ones I used.

090203-love-is-a-canvas-palette-425

I toned the mini canvas and the sides with a mix of Transparent Red Oxide and Ultramarine Blue Golden Fluid Acrylics. Those dry quickly, so with a little help from my hair dryer, I was then able to use Golden OPEN Acrylics to paint the rest over that toned canvas.

I started working on the basic placement of shapes, and then worked more and more toward contrasts and details. I use blu-tack to adhere the mini canvas to a larger piece of foam board. That way I can hold it securely in one hand when necessary, while painting with the other.

Athens Lighthouse from Hudson — Miniature Painting

Posted by Jamie on December 2nd, 2009

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-gift-box-450

1.5×2″, Golden Acrylics on 4-ply Rag Bristol, framed
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

These miniature gems are too much fun to be legal! This is a miniature version of an 8×10″ painting that I did en plein air in the spring. You can see that painting by clicking here. I enjoy doing different size versions of the same scene. It gives me a chance to play with the composition and colors and try to turn out something even better each time. In this case, I shortened the peninsula so that the eye has a path around it to travel to the lighthouse.

My miniature paintings come with a gift box and buyer’s choice of either a little table easel, or a golden thread affixed to the back and a tack for hanging salon style.

Here’s a slightly larger, cropped photo so that you can see the painting better. I wish this camera had a better lens so you could really see all the teeny tiny brushstrokes in there!

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-500v

So much goes into doing one of these miniatures. They take me longer than paintings many times the size. The first step in the process is to cut the support for the painting. In this case, I used four-ply Strathmore rag bristol. It’s a very expensive support, but at this size I could probably get 100 paintings from a sheet! I size that with Golden Matte Medium, because I love the way acrylic paint takes to that sized surface.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step1-450

Using a template previously cut to size for that frame, I place it on the new support and draw the rectangle around it. When I finish the painting, I’ll cut to the lines and will have a painting that will fit perfectly into the tiny frame.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step2-450

I put a tiny dot of blue-tack on the back of each corner, and affix my support to a piece of black foamcore that has also been sized with matte medium. The black helps reduce glare as I work, and makes it easier to support the tiny painting.

I set up my painting reference next to my easel, and put a photo reference of the scene up on the computer. I can zoom in and out of the photo reference to help me with the details, while using the color from my plein air piece.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step3-400

I sketched in my composition with just a few pencil lines, the coated the whole surface with Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide. That served the dual purpose of sealing the drawing and killing the white of the support.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step4-400

This is as far as I was able to get without magnification! I have a goose neck lamp with a flourescent bulb and a built-in magnifying glass. I brought that over and worked a couple more hours to finish off the painting. The painting was then cut with an Xacto knife to fit in the frame.

For the sake of the photo of the finished painting, I put it into the frame temporarily. It will actually have to come out to be sealed and then varnished in a week or so. Once that is dry, it will be glued into the frame, and a backing put on that will cover the painting and frame from behind, so it will look like it came straight out of a high end frame shop!

Hopefully you now have an idea of what goes into turning out one of these little gems. They make great gift items.

Mary’s Boat at Sunset

This is a painting of my friend Mary’s boat, out on the lake beside our house at sunset. The clouds were especially spectacular that evening. It is painted on unstretched canvas, with artist grade oil paints, and mounted on rag board to give it a permanent, artist grade, archival support.

Sailboat on the Lake miniature oil painting

3″x2″ visible painting size, 5″x4″ including frame. Easel stand shown is not included, since the frame has an easel back so that it can stand up on its own. It also has a hanging hook on the back if you’d prefer to hang it.
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I ran out of varnish and had to drive all the way to Norwalk CT to get the kind I wanted! I spend the remainder of the day varnishing paintings and then priming panels…..No painting for the weary!

So, today’s painting is an older work that I enjoy a lot, which has not been shown here. It’s a 3×2″ miniature painting of my friend’s boat out on the lake. The painting is already framed in this elegant, gold wood frame. It is the perfect accessory for a side table, coffee table, dresser top, or shelf.

Peaceful Island Sunset framed and ready to hang

3×5″, Oils on Multimedia Artboard
This painting will be sent beautifully framed in a gold, wood frame and ready to hang. If you’d like the painting unframed, please contact me.
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I found four gorgeous gold wood frames for miniatures in an art store, and am doing some paintings for these beautiful frames. It may sound a little bit backwards, but it works! The painting size is 3×5″, and with the frame it is about 6×8″.

This painting was done from a photo I took on a Lake George sunset cruise. The colors were just magnificent, and the little islands in the lake provided the perfect silhouetted foreground elements for the colorful backdrop.

Here is what the frame looks like with the painting, though I think the painting colors above are more accurate.

This little gem is just off my easel. My tiny paintings, which I fondly refer to as “Jamie’s Jewels”, make ideal holiday gifts. You can commission a favorite scene, or choose one of the unsold miniatures already available. They are only $100 and come gift-boxed. Take a look at some of them by clicking here and then scrolling down the page beyond this post.

You’ll see that they can be either on tiny, unframed, gallery-wrapped stretched canvases, or I can paint these postage stamp size minis and put them in beautiful gold frames. I ship them in gold gift boxes with gold ribbons, so they are ready to put under your tree or in Somebody Special’s Christmas stocking. They can be prepared to be hung on a wall, or set on a miniature easel like this one. Surprise a loved one this holiday season with a creative gift from the heart!

I took a photo of this painting with a tape dispenser so that you can better see the scale of this tiny work. The paintings are done under a magnification lamp with very small brushes, and actually take longer to do than paintings many times the size. Plus, they come beautifully framed!

(Quarter is for size reference only.)

070907-van-goghs-chair-quarter-400.jpg

This painting is a copy of the famous painting, Van Gogh’s Chair. The chair was a symbol of stability in his world of continual crisis. He painted this in December of 1888 through January 1889.

I love doing these tiny copies, as it makes me closely examine paintings that I so admire in terms of their composition, rendering style, and color harmonies.

Mini Monet copy of Poppy Field Near Argenteuil

This tiny Monet copy of his famous painting, Poppy Field Near Argenteuil, is set with a Coke can for size reference! These little ones can sometimes take longer than a much larger painting, and this one definitely fell into that category. I’ve painted this Monet scene before; it’s one of my favorite Monet paintings, and looks fabulous in this diminutive form! Here’s a picture of the painting alone, about actual size. Unfortunately, my camera doesn’t photograph these tiny paintings very well:

080704-mini-monet-com1-150.jpg

Here’s a slightly larger version too. I had to use a magnifying glass while painting to get some of the details in on the figures and the house!

080704-mini-monet-com1-250.jpg

The beautiful gold frame is actually a dollhouse frame. I cut the board to fit the frame, and then did the painting to size. It will be sealed and varnished, and will look just like a tiny oil painting in a frame. These miniatures can be purchased with a pin back so you can wear your art, or a gold thread for hanging from a brass tack, or a miniature easel to stand on a table. I ship them in gold gift boxes (as shown in the first image). They are often done on a commission basis, and you may commission any painting that no longer falls under copyright protection, or I can do an original for you.

I saw these tiny stretched canvases in an art supply store. They were just too cute to resist! I painted this sailboat and sunset from a photo I took when I was up in Bar Harbor, Maine. The painting will be shipped to you in a gold gift box, and with the mini easel. The nickel is there for size reference so you can see how tiny it is! This would make a perfect gift for your favorite sailor, or anybody who loves Bar Harbor and Maine as much as I do!

Here’s another image of it from the sides, so you can see the depth of the stretchers. I painted the sides with black acrylic. It looks really sharp!

I am finally getting a little tired of overcast mornings. I decided to do this one very small, and sat in front of one of my favorite fall trees to paint. The quarter is there for size reference; the painting is just 2″ square! I love the way the tree twists and bends. These tiny stretched canvases are just too cute.

The edges of the canvas are painted gold. The painting comes in a gold gift box with a gold bow, and the easel is included. Do your holiday shopping early.

The castle remains on Bannerman’s Island tower above the Hudson River like something out of a movie. While plein air painting on Bannerman’s Island, I took lots of photos of the views and castle ruins to work from in the studio. This is a view of the Armory side entrance from the path above. The painting is a diminutive 2.75″ square, and sits perfectly on the easel to liven up any spot in your home with a piece of Hudson River history. The canvas edges are painted gold as shown below, for the gem-like quality that these miniatures evoke.

Although small, these minis take as much time to paint as their larger counterparts. I love the way they look and the charm of the small scale.
