I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

I had a wonderful autumn day last week painting with friends along the Hudson River. We went to Boscobel Restoration in Garrison NY, where there is a long bluff overlooking Constitution Marsh and the river. The marsh was just starting to take on that reddish autumn glow, and an enormous sailing yacht went by, providing a great focal point out in the river. This is always one of my favorite vistas to paint — especially as the marsh turns to warm colors in spring and fall.

This view of Crawford Notch, New Hampshire, was painted by many of the Hudson River School artists, who traveled up to the White Mountains to take in the spectacular scenery. Saco Lake lies just north of the notch, reflecting the mountain and amplifying the drama of the setting. The white rock on the left side of the notch is called Elephant Head. You can hike up there for majestic views in all directions. When I’m able to do a larger painting of the scene, you’ll be able to see why it’s called Elephant Head! Paintings are underway of views from up there too.

I’ve been doing a bunch of paintings from photos I took during our recent trip to New Hampshire. We took the cog railway up Mt. Washington one day (great fun!) and enjoyed the majestic views of the Presidential Range from the top. The Appalachian Trail runs along the tops of several of the mountains, following the ridge line on the journey up to Maine. I captured this view of a lone hiker on the ridge and couldn’t wait to get my brushes going on it.

Many of the Hudson River School painters traveled to the White Mountains. I visited a number of the spots where they painted on my trip, and it’s not hard to see why they were so inspired by the views they encountered!

This summer, my husband and I went to the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary, aka Slabsides, to walk around the pond, see his cabin, and take photos. It was not easy to find the place, but once we finally got there, we enjoyed walking the property and seeing why he had 7,000 visitors during his time at the cabin! The pond is quite beautiful, with striking rock outcroppings and a rocky peninsula to explore. The original cabin is still standing too. I did this little painting from one of the many photos I took there.

Fall is just beginning here, but I still have a bunch of my summer paintings to post! If you’ve been tagging along on my blog, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve loved doing these watercolor creek paintings this year. Some have focused on reflections, some on foliage like overhanging tree limbs and branches, and this one is all about the light streaming through from the back of the painting and hitting the water. I’m going to really miss these warm summer days, standing along the stream banks with my easel. I think I’ll have to frame a few of these and hang them in my house to remind me of what it felt like!

This Hudson River School site in the Catskill Mountains is one of my favorite hike destinations. I go up there several times a year, and understand why it was also a favorite of the Hudson River School painters! This is probably destined to be my last Sunset Rock painting before the fall colors take hold.

Speaking of the Hudson River School, for those who have not gone to the Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill NY to see the Sanford Gifford show, you have until October 29 to do that. I just went back for the second time, and it’s truly a “Don’t Miss It” exhibit for those who love Hudson River School art, art history, and hiking in the Catskills. The show focuses on Gifford’s paintings done in the Catskill Mountains, and provides site information for where they were all painted too. There is also a show catalog available at the Visitor Center there.

Continuing on with my series River Arches, this rendition drops the horizon line down to feature the rising trunks of the arch, and the light streaming through the foliage in the distance. This was painted on location in the Platte Clove vicinity of the Catskill Mountains.

This Catskills scene from North South Lake, made famous by Hudson River School artists Thomas Cole and Jasper Cropsey, is a large format painting in warm sunset colors of golds and rusts. It is from my series of works done in analogous colors, which harmonizes the palette by using only colors adjacent to one another on the color wheel. I found the warm-colored paintings of that series to be more challenging to paint in some ways, but often more rewarding too! This is one of my personal favorites from the series.

I’ve painted this south-facing view, as well as the westward view, from Sunset Rock so many times, at different times of day, various seasons, and assorted atmospheric conditions. I never get tired of painting from there, or hiking there. The scene was painted by several of the Hudson River School artists; I guess they didn’t get tired of it either!

This graceful pear tree is in our yard. I’ve been wanting to paint it in all seasons, and finally at least got around to the winter version, which provides strong contrasts between the dark tree, sky, and snowy background.

We used to get pears every summer on this tree, and a big mama bear would visit with her cubs to take the fruit. When our second pear tree died, this one stopped producing fruit. This year, it must have found another pear tree somewhere to cross-pollinate, and once again we have fruit on the tree. No sign yet of the bears!

5×7″ Watercolor, with custom ivory white mat and backing board to fit any standard 5×7″ frame. (Painting inside the mat is about 3 1/2 x 5, so there is about a 1″ mat border.)

This is the first in a series of small watercolor sunsets of this view from Croton Point Park. It is a vista made famous by the Hudson River School artists, and was recently added to the official Hudson River School Art Trails sites. Croton Point Park is the location of the annual Clearwater Festival, and is great place to enjoy Hudson views and sunsets. I can’t wait to do a larger painting of this scene, but I was having so much fun doing these little ones that I have not yet embarked on a larger version!

At Olana, the estate of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church, there is a western view from a lesser-known path of the Hudson River and the Catskills. It’s the most dramatic vista from the property for me because of the fantastic skyline of the mountains, and the fact that it faces due west at sunset. On this particular visit, I was able to catch the sun rays streaming from the cloud forms as the colors changed. I did a quick painting on location, and captured some photos for additional paintings like this one. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting.

Tucked away behind North Mountain, in the northeastern region of the Catskill Mountains, there is a beautiful resort called Winter Clove Inn. At the northeastern edge of the Catskill Mountains lies Winter Clove, home to many stunning ravines and waterfalls. While out hiking in early spring, I came upon this stream with several arched trees extending from the shorelines over the water from either side. As the creek meandered, the shoreline trees formed arches through the various planes of the scene. I took a lot of photos to do a series of these arched tree forms, and hope to return soon to paint some of them on location. They present interesting compositional opportunities focused on the arches, and reflections in the distance, and/or transparency of the water as it nears the foreground. I love these birch trees that surround North South Lake in the Catskills, which is one of the sites where the Hudson River School artists loved to visit and sketch. We went for a walk there recently on an overcast day, and the path made the perfect entry to the painting, framed by some of my favorite trees. I’ve been doing a lot more watercolor work lately. It lends itself to these atmospheric renderings and a loose approach where the paint can make its own statement. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

Spring has certainly sprung today. The forsythia is in bloom and the temperatures are soaring! This is one of my personal favorite springtime paintings, so I thought it appropriate to pull it up to the top in celebration. Below is the original post that I wrote when I did the painting.

After braving yesterday’s cold and windy temps up on a hillside overlooking the Hudson River, I decided to opt for something more springlike today, and pulled out some of my favorite spring photo references. The red barn and forsythia really caught my eye here, and the children playing nearby were an added bonus. I remember this day at Muscoot farm like it was yesterday. I was out painting there and these adorable children (clearly budding artists) came over with their mom to look at my painting. They couldn’t wait to get home after that so that they could paint! The painting I did that day sold last spring; I’m glad to have a bunch of photos to work from to paint this barn again with the bright yellow forsythia.

My palette for this painting was Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Raw Sienna, Venetian Red, Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue. I adore these Raymar linen panels. They have wonderful texture and always seem to give a painting that extra refined touch.

This painting features the fabulous view from the hills above Garrison, looking over West Point, and north through the Hudson Highlands to Bannerman Island. It is a stunning vista at any time of day, but sunsets are magical!

I have been wanting to paint this scene ever since I saw it for the first time a few years ago. No matter what time of day or season, this view in the Catskills is spectacular. My husband and I drove past a few weeks ago and I took some photos. During the big snowstorm last week, I started the painting; it seemed appropriate! I’d like to do a large format horizontal of this view also….someday.

I have a favorite field I like to paint from at Frederic Church’s Olana estate in Hudson NY. Hudson River School artist Church did a lot of sunset paintings from that area of his property. I was walking along the trail past one of his painting spots close to sunset when I caught this opening in the trees, overlooking the Hudson River through the clearing. I started to paint it on location, but couldn’t finish in time before it got dark. I snapped a bunch of photos while painting, and finally had a chance to finish it up today. I definitely want to check out this scene again at other times of day, and in other seasons. They’ve been working a lot on clearing overgrowth to bring some of these views back that have gotten overgrown as the years go by. I’m always excited to see what’s new in the landscape there!
