At the northeastern edge of the Catskill Mountains lies Winter Clove, home to many stunning ravines and waterfalls. This one, along the Kiskatom Creek, has a beautiful covered bridge above it, and a clear, nearly viridian-covered pool at the bottom. I went for a hike here with my husband, and had to make a return trip with my paints!

This painting of a moored boat with dramatic skies was painted from a photo I took a few years ago. I made several attempts at a watercolor rendition of this scene before coming up with this one, and hope to do more. I like the drama of it, and the way these colors work together. While out hiking in early spring, I came upon this stream with several arched trees extending from the shorelines over the water from either side. As the creek meandered, the shoreline trees formed arches through the various planes of the scene. I took a lot of photos to do a series of these arched tree forms, and hope to return soon to paint some of them on location. They present interesting compositional opportunities focused on the arches, and reflections in the distance, and/or transparency of the water as it nears the foreground. This fabulous scene was painted from a photo I took on a friend’s balcony overlooking Candlewood Lake. I love these birch trees that surround North South Lake in the Catskills, which is one of the sites where the Hudson River School artists loved to visit and sketch. We went for a walk there recently on an overcast day, and the path made the perfect entry to the painting, framed by some of my favorite trees. I’ve been doing a lot more watercolor work lately. It lends itself to these atmospheric renderings and a loose approach where the paint can make its own statement. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

Spring has certainly sprung today. The forsythia is in bloom and the temperatures are soaring! This is one of my personal favorite springtime paintings, so I thought it appropriate to pull it up to the top in celebration. Below is the original post that I wrote when I did the painting.

After braving yesterday’s cold and windy temps up on a hillside overlooking the Hudson River, I decided to opt for something more springlike today, and pulled out some of my favorite spring photo references. The red barn and forsythia really caught my eye here, and the children playing nearby were an added bonus. I remember this day at Muscoot farm like it was yesterday. I was out painting there and these adorable children (clearly budding artists) came over with their mom to look at my painting. They couldn’t wait to get home after that so that they could paint! The painting I did that day sold last spring; I’m glad to have a bunch of photos to work from to paint this barn again with the bright yellow forsythia.

My palette for this painting was Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Raw Sienna, Venetian Red, Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue. I adore these Raymar linen panels. They have wonderful texture and always seem to give a painting that extra refined touch.

I have been wanting to paint this scene ever since I saw it for the first time a few years ago. No matter what time of day or season, this view in the Catskills is spectacular. My husband and I drove past a few weeks ago and I took some photos. During the big snowstorm last week, I started the painting; it seemed appropriate! I’d like to do a large format horizontal of this view also….someday.

I have a favorite field I like to paint from at Frederic Church’s Olana estate in Hudson NY. Hudson River School artist Church did a lot of sunset paintings from that area of his property. I was walking along the trail past one of his painting spots close to sunset when I caught this opening in the trees, overlooking the Hudson River through the clearing. I started to paint it on location, but couldn’t finish in time before it got dark. I snapped a bunch of photos while painting, and finally had a chance to finish it up today. I definitely want to check out this scene again at other times of day, and in other seasons. They’ve been working a lot on clearing overgrowth to bring some of these views back that have gotten overgrown as the years go by. I’m always excited to see what’s new in the landscape there!

This fabulous view of the northern gateway to the Hudson Highlands is one of my favorite Hudson River vistas. You can see Bannerman Island, with Storm King Mountain on the right, and Breakneck Ridge in Cold Spring on the left. I painted it from a photo, taken with a telephoto lens at a distance, which amplifies the atmospheric effects of the distance. Infused with the blues and greens of summer, it exudes tranquility. We can all use a bit of that! This is a large painting with an expansive feel, and would be a great centerpiece over a sofa. Art to Go from the Hudson River Valley

170131 Varnished Paintings 435

Email me at JamieWG@aol.com if interested in this painting.

The other day, I varnished ten of my new Hudson River and Hudson Valley paintings. They range from scenes overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades from New York City, to Peach Lake in Brewster, and Burger Hill in Rhinebeck, up to the ledges of Sunset Rock overlooking North South Lake (beloved Hudson River School site), and the Catskill Mountains. Some of these were started on location and finished up in the studio, while others were painted from my photos and other plein air paintings. They represent much of the terrain I’ve traversed over the past six months or so, in search of the best of what the Hudson Valley has to offer my muse.

The varnishing process takes time to set up, so I like to do large batches at a time. Usually that means about 17-20 paintings. Lately I’ve worked on some larger pieces, which has lowered my production in terms of quantity. Working on those big paintings has meant that the little ones tend to hang out in the studio longer, before they get photographed, varnished, and up on my website. As the weeks go by, they get more touchups and adjustments as I see them. I think this has led to an overall increase in quality. As I look at this set of paintings now, I’m really happy with what I’ve achieved in this batch. Here’s a photo that you can click on, and you can then zoom in on specific paintings.

The large, framed painting of the Hudson River and Palisades is already spoken for, and out the door. (I do miss that one already! But there is a smaller version of it available among the others, and I can always do another large one for you on a commission basis.) The smaller works above it are all available and in search of new homes. If you see one that interests you, send me off an email (or comment below), and I’ll get back to you with more information. They will all be posted individually as I adjust the single images. Some of those have already been posted with prices, and are visible by going to my home page and scrolling down.

Sunset Rock was a favorite destination of many of the Hudson River School artists. It’s long been one of my own favorite locations as well. This western view overlooking North South Lake is well known, but the south-facing view is equally engaging.

Below you can see a photo of the painting in progress on location. It sometimes takes awhile for me to get paintings photographed and up on my website; in this case, the painting sold before I had a chance to post it here.

This Hudson River and Palisades painting is another scene from Wave Hill Gardens in Riverdale, New York. I recently posted one I’d painted without the wall in the scene; this one contains the stone wall that is so indicative of the Wave Hill location. I wanted to see if I’d like it better with the wall or without, but ended up liking both of them!

I’ve been working on a large commissioned painting of this scene overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. Wave Hill is a public garden in Riverdale, New York. It has a striking view of the Palisades, and sits high above the river. Before embarking on the giant, I did a couple of small paintings of the view, including this one.

I’m fortunate to live by a lake with a great sunrise view. This was painted on a morning with a haze over the lake, creating spectacular colors as the sun came up. It glowed yellow-orange as it emerged above the tree line, casting warmth and light upon the whole scene.

I just brought this painting over to RiverWinds Gallery today, along with five others, for their grand re-opening celebration. The reception for the new show will be this Saturday, January 14, from 5-8pm. The address is 172 Main Street, Beacon NY. If you cannot make it to the opening, the gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6pm.

This painting was done from a photo that I took at Innisfree Garden in Millbrook NY. It’s a scene that lends itself to many different approaches in light, color, and atmosphere. In this case, I used an analogous palette of mostly yellows, golds and earthy orange tones to cast a warm glow on an impending weather event, with a path to lead the eye into the painting.

This painting features an expansive vista overlooking Candlewood Lake in Connecticut. There were long lake views in both directi161114-birds-eye-view-6x9-ac-600ons, and a western, sunset exposure to boot. I took so many photos when I was there, and can’t wait to do more paintings from them during the winter. I’ll return for some plein air versions when the weather warms up again. I’m calling this one Bird’s Eye View, but they could probably all have that title, with views in both directions that seem to go on forever.

This is one of the many stunning, old trees at Olana, home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. This tree is right near the site of Church’s old studio. I went on a drawing/painting spree with trees this year, and especially enjoyed working in these warm sepia colors on toned paper.

A few days ago, I posted a painting of a tree from Olana, titled Cedar Overlooking the Hudson. This is a drawing I did of the same tree. As I said previously, I can’t seem to get enough of this one!

This drawing is one of a series of three trees, all done in the same sepia tones. The other two will be posted over the next two days. They can be purchased individually, or subtract 20% if you’d like to have all three to hang as a triptych. They are framed with identical ivory mats and gorgeous custom gold frames, and make a beautiful grouping in a classic style.

I went painting with a group of artist friends in the town of Wappingers Falls. There were charming old houses all around. I settled into a shady spot close to my buddies, and did this watercolor of one of the classic village homes.

Unbelievable as it may seem, this is my fifth artistic rendition of this tree overlooking the Hudson River at Olana. I think after this, I’ll just start to title them by number as a series! Like the others, I painted it on location at Olana, home of Hudson River School artist, Frederic Church.

I love this scene and have been playing with it in various color combinations for nearly two years. There are so many ways to interpret the composition in terms of light, season, focal point, and color palette, that I can’t seem to get tired of it! It’s a view of the lake at Innisfree Gardens. This most recent rendering is in fall colors, with the late day light striking the eastern hillsides and distant mountain before sunset. Below is an image you can click on for a slightly larger view of the painting.
