    the-impressionists.jpg

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

I’ve been doing a bunch of small, colorful watercolors lately. Some have been done out on location, and others in the studio during these colder or rainy days. Above are some of my favorites. The sizes range from about 3 1/2 x 5 1/2″ to 4×6″, and will arrive custom matted to 8×10″, with a backing board included. They will fit into any standard 8×10″ frame, making them perfect holiday art gifts.

$80.00 plus $10 shipping and insurance within the Continental United States. For local sales, shipping charge will be allocated to NYS Sales Tax. Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com for International purchases or with any questions.

5×7″ Watercolor, with custom ivory white mat and backing board to fit any standard 5×7″ frame. (Painting inside the mat is about 3 1/2 x 5, so there is about a 1″ mat border.)

This is the first in a series of small watercolor sunsets of this view from Croton Point Park. It is a vista made famous by the Hudson River School artists, and was recently added to the official Hudson River School Art Trails sites. Croton Point Park is the location of the annual Clearwater Festival, and is great place to enjoy Hudson views and sunsets. I can’t wait to do a larger painting of this scene, but I was having so much fun doing these little ones that I have not yet embarked on a larger version!

SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

These miniature paintings, which I call “Jamie’s Jewels”, are usually done on a commission basis. In spite of the diminutive size, they are done under magnification, and are very time consuming. After being painted, they are varnished, framed, photographed, and sold with the miniature easel included. They are shipped in little gold gift boxes with gold bows, and make the ideal present for that Special Someone! This one is a miniature copy of one of Monet’s many beautiful renderings of the Houses of Parliament.

Miniature Painting — Paris Street Scene after Caillebotte

SAMSUNG CSC

3″ across, acrylic on 100% rag board

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter who lived from 1848-1894. He is considered one of the painters of the French Impressionist school, though looking at his work, one would never think that! His paintings are more firmly rooted in realism, with its harder edges and more muted color schemes than so many of his contemporaries. In addition to being a wonderful painter, Caillebotte had a law degree with a license to practice, and was also an engineer. Talk about a multi-talented individual!

I was commissioned to do this miniature version of Caillebotte’s 7 foot by 9 foot Paris street scene. Online images of the painting appeared quite cool in color, but then the client sent me a photo he took of the painting in a museum. That image showed many more ochres and browns. I preferred that slightly warmer interpretation, and went for something in between in my own version.

Scaling down an enormous, mural-like painting to 3″ across is no easy task. I imagined that the actual painting in real life is much more painterly than when it’s shrunk down to a tiny fraction of its size, as we see on a computer screen. Aside from the technical difficulties of putting in all that detail in a tiny painting, it would lose much of its character. It required considerable editing to keep enough detail in there without overwhelming the small space. I’d like to believe I successfully met that challenge!

My miniature works are all sent in gold gift boxes with table easels for a curio cabinet or side table, and most are framed too. (See below.) They are usually done as commissions, but occasionally I have one on hand, ready to go to a new home. They make fabulous gift items. Here are images of some of my miniature originals. These three are spoken for, but I’d be happy to do one for you!

This was painted from a Hudson River overlook near the Bear Mountain Bridge. My husband and I went on a photo expedition and were treated to a great sunset, which made it worth putting up with freezing cold temperatures! I got a bunch of great photos to work from during the winter, so stay tuned!

Sunsets are always special times at Olana, estate of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. He loved to paint along this ridge below his home, which faces due west across the Hudson River. The Catskill Mountains form the skyline as the sun’s descending rays cascade across the sky and landscape. No two sunsets are alike here!

This is the second of my mini Hudson River School Sunset series, which features locations where the Hudson River School artists painted. Some of these sites are along the Hudson River School Art Trail. Others are sites where Cole, Church, Durand and others painted, but due to difficult access, limited parking, or some other reason, they are not on the Art Trail registry.

These miniatures are perfect gift items. They will arrive in gold gift boxes, already framed in these ornate gold miniature frames as shown. The little black easels are also included, so you can set them right out in a favorite spot. Everybody has a place for a little jewel, or a collection of them! I also do commissions of these miniature pieces, so if you have a favorite scene you’d like to have as a miniature painting, let me know.

I’ve been doing commissions like crazy through this holiday season, but I finally had time to do a few of my “Jamie’s Jewels” miniatures — something I’ve not done for a really long time! This panoramic sunset miniature painting of the Hudson Highlands, as seen from Cold Spring, was painted on location on a miniature stretched canvas. I painted the sides too, so it looks perfect set on a miniature easel on a desk or side table. The wooden display easel is included in the price of the painting. It’s a perfect gift item for somebody who loves the Hudson River! Storm King Mountain is on the left, with Little Stony Point jutting out into the river, and Breakneck Ridge on the right.

I haven’t done many miniatures for awhile, and I find I’m really missing them! They are wonderful gift items, and make a beautiful display set on their miniature easels on a side table or desk. This is a painting I did on location at Hudson River School artist Frederic Church’s estate, Olana. This tree overlooks the Hudson River along one of the carriage roads. I’ve done a few paintings of this tree and just can’t seem to get enough of it! A lovely wooden display easel is included with the painting. No framing needed!

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I went on a boat tour of Bannerman Island. Although I’ve been there several times to paint for Bannerman Island Gallery, I’d never gone on the tour before. It was my husband’s first time setting foot on the island! It was nice to relax and enjoy his company, and to spend the time taking photos instead of lugging painting equipment and feeling so rushed to complete something.

I took loads of pictures. It was a day with fabulous cloud formations and good light. While at the peak of the island, facing south toward the Hudson Highlands, this boat cruised along heading downriver, and the sun beamed a yellow pathway on the water. I painted this miniature from the photo I took at that moment.

It’s always tough to get a good image of a painting in a frame, but I tried! You can click this image to enlarge it a bit:

Palisades and the Hudson River in Miniature

Posted by Jamie on May 15th, 2013

3×5″, Acrylic on rag board, beautifully framed (Size with frame is about 6×8″.)
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

This painting is available for purchase at Adams Fairacre Farm in Newburgh NY. I have 20 paintings on display there as a United Way fundraiser until the end of December. You can see the paintings, help United Way, do some holiday shopping, and buy your fresh produce and groceries all at the same time!

I had a beautiful, gold wood frame for a 3×5″ painting, and decided to do this scene of sailboats out on the Hudson River, below the Palisade Cliffs. There is a lovely, late day glow above the cliff line past the horizon, and soft fall colors abound in the foreground tree, distant hillside, and water reflections. The image above was taken in daylight, so the color is much cooler. The image below was taken with warmer indoor lighting at night, so you can see how much the color changes depending on the room lighting at the time. It sure does make image adjustment a challenge!

I took a quick cellphone snapshot of the painting in the frame (below), but hopefully you can at least get an idea of how lovely this frame is. It looks great on a small table easel. I have also included hanging hardware, in case you have a special, small wall space that you want to brighten up. It would make a great Father’s Day gift for that Dad who loves sailing!

Spring Morning at Boscobel Miniature plein air

Today I went to paint Cherry Blossoms at Boscobel. It is an annual ritual for me, and I look forward to it all winter. So, you can imagine my disappointment when I arrived on the scene only to find that the Cherry Blossoms had come and gone in the past two weeks! I guess the wind and rain a few days ago brought down whatever was on the trees. They were all green leaves, with pink petals strewn on the ground.

I wasn’t going to let a beautiful day go to waste though! There wasn’t much of the morning light left, so I pulled out this tiny panel, pulled up a chair along the bluff overlooking the Hudson River, and did one of my “Jamie’s Jewels Miniature Gems” paintings to catch what I could of the morning light over Constitution Marsh. In the afternoon, the marsh darkens and cools, and the contrast between land and water increases as the sun shifts to the west. You can see that already starting to happen in the scene behind the painting, though I think there must have also been a cloud obscuring the light from the marsh area when I snapped this picture!

I’ll be getting up a better image of this one in the days to come. I am just so thrilled that my image uploader on this blog seems to be working again, so even though I only have this little image that I snapped with my cellphone camera, I just had to post it! I do have quite a backlog here to photograph and get up on my site. Thank you for coming back to look at my work. I know it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to show it, but there will be a lot more coming now that the site is running again.

I have such a wonderful time painting these little miniatures! This one was painted on location at Olana, former home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. It was another beautiful day overlooking the mighty Hudson, which has inspired artists for generations. It was painted in a completely different way than the oil sketch from the same location, which I posted yesterday. There is no one “right way” to do things when it comes to painting!

This miniature painting was done on location as a color study for the larger painting that I posted yesterday. I had done it on nice Canson board and was so pleased with the way it turned out that I varnished it and edged it in gold to set on this miniature easel. It’s a charmer!

This inquisitive giraffe was painted from one of the photos I took this past week at the Bronx Zoo. (You can see my sketches of the giraffes done at the zoo at this link.) I’ve really fallen in love with their beautifully expressive faces and graceful movements. Maybe I’ll do a few larger paintings of them too. They sure do seem to fit this tall format!

I spent a very chilly morning along the Hudson River last week. I did a lot of sketches and took a ton of photos. It was worth braving the cold! This tug was part of the river traffic that entertained me that morning, with the Palisades looming in the background, and the glistening fall foliage.

I was painting by a pond one day and these adorable ducks were following me around everywhere! They posed for a number of fabulous photos, which begged to be painted. I thought this one would make a great holiday gift, so I painted it as a long format miniature. It can be set on its easel on a tabletop or mantle, or hung on a wall. Since it’s on gallery wrapped canvas and painted on all sides, it doesn’t need a frame.

This painting is a miniature version of the one I posted yesterday. Watercolorist David Taylor got me into doing these tiny watercolor sketches as quick-captures of a scene, or to warm up before embarking on a larger version. They give the artist a chance to test drive some ideas and different compositions, without taking up a huge amount of time. If something’s not going to work, better to find out with less time invested! It also lets us explore ways of making improvements and testing color combinations. I’ve become quite hooked on these! They look charming matted and framed, and hung on a wall or set on a little table easel.

This is a miniature watercolor of the scene I posted yesterday. Everybody has room for one of these little gems. They look charming either framed and hung, or displayed on tabletop easels. This was also painted on location at Frederic Church’s Olana estate, a home of the Hudson River School movement.

I did a series of small watercolor paintings from Olana over the past week. The home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church is a place near and dear to my heart. I’ve been wanting to paint this hillside view toward Mount Merino for a long time! It was done from one of the carriage roads on the property. I was drawn to the way the near hillside is illuminated in the sunlight, framed by Mount Merino behind it.

This painting has been double matted so that you can pop it into any standard 5×7″ frame.

Here’s another of my postage-stamp-size miniature Monet Impressionist paintings. They are so much fun to paint, and I always learn something new about the chosen “master” when I do one of these. I wish you could all see it in person. So much is lost in these digital representations of artwork!

These miniatures are done on a commission basis only, so if you’re interested in one, just email me at JamieWG@aol.com.

Below is another image of the painting. This picture is about twice the size of the actual painting:

Here’s another of my tiny “Micro Master” paintings, this one after a Monet favorite. Figures are especially difficult in this diminutive size, but I love the challenge! The quarter in the photo is for size reference, so you can see how small these really are.

These miniatures are so difficult and time consuming that I only do them on a commission basis. It’s a labor of love! If you either have a favorite painting by a Master in mind or would like me to choose one for you as a commission, you can email me at JamieWG@aol.com.

The image above is probably showing this painting at larger than real life on your screen! This is postage stamp size. The painting itself is about 1.25×1.75″. The quarter is there for size reference. I love Tolouse-Lautrec, and it so much fun to do these Micro Master miniature versions! I had to do some editing and use my own artistic license for this teeny tiny size. For instance, I’d never have been able to do the lettering that was on the painting in this itty bitty format!

These tiny master renditions are generally done only on a commission basis, so if you’ve got one in mind that you’d like to order, just drop me an email at JamieWG@aol.com.

These little Monet interpretations are so much fun to paint! This was my first go at one of his many Haystack paintings. I wish you could all see it in person, because it looks so much better than this digital representation!

These framed miniatures come with a mini easel to set them on, or can be hung salon style from a gold thread or ribbon. They are sent in gold gift boxes with gold bows to complete the “gem” effect!

While there’s still time to ship before the holidays, I’ll be bumping up some of my favorite smaller, unsold works that would be wonderful holiday gifts for that special someone. Give the gift of art — a celebration of beauty and creative inspiration. Purchase two and receive free shipping!

Some time ago, there was a fantastic rainbow over the lake just before sunset. I grabbed my camera and ran outside to get some photo references. This was painted from one of the photos I took. The light and colors were almost too amazing to believe.

This miniature is shipped in a gold gift box, with a gold bow. The easel is included too! It makes the ideal present for any art lover, and looks great set on a small table or shelf. Quarter is shown for size reference.

Itty Bitty Version of a Monet Sunrise

These Monet Minis are so much fun to paint! I loved working with the orange and blue complements he used for his sunrise painting. Since it’s so tiny, I bumped up the saturation a bit in my version. Postage stamp size paintings tend to disappear if there’s not enough color and contrast! Here’s a closer view:

These tiny copies of works by famous painters tend to get done on a commission basis, so if you’ve got a favorite you’d like done that is now within the public domain, let me know. They are sold framed and with a small easel stand, and come in a tiny gold gift box with ribbon.

This is the third time I’ve painted this little Monet copy of Red Poppies at Argenteuil in miniature format. I love doing these little jewels! There are a couple more I want to do soon. They’re such a nice change from my larger pieces. I take them as far as I can with just my glasses on, then switch to a lit magnification lens to finish, all with teeny tiny brushes!

These miniatures are always sent out in gold gift boxes and make elegant gift items for that special occasion. You can commission a scene of your choosing, a scene from one of my other paintings, or a copy of an Old Master that is no longer under copyright protection.

Love is a Canvas

Love is a canvas, furnished by Nature, and embroidered by imagination — Voltaire

4×2″, Golden Acrylics on gallery wrapped canvas, miniature easel included
The quote above is inscribed around the stretcher bars on the back of the canvas. Quarter is in the image for size reference only.
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I immediately thought of this quote when I set up to do this painting. The canvas is gallery wrapped, and the image is painted around the sides of the canvas, so that it can be viewed from all sides. The miniature easel will be shipped with the painting.

It is so difficult to get good photographs of miniatures. They always look much better in person. This one has a fairly dark background with some sheen, so it was impossible to get rid of all the glare from the lights when I took the photo. Here’s another image of it, with a Coke can for additional size reference:

090203-love-is-a-canvas-1-425

For such a little painting, I used a tremendous palette! Colors:
Cadmium Yellow Primrose
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red Light
Pyrrole Red
Cadmium Red Medium
Alizarin Crimson hue
Cerulean Blue hue
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Oxide of Chromium
Jenkins Green
Titanium White
I had a few other colors out there as well, but the ones listed above were the ones I used.

090203-love-is-a-canvas-palette-425

I toned the mini canvas and the sides with a mix of Transparent Red Oxide and Ultramarine Blue Golden Fluid Acrylics. Those dry quickly, so with a little help from my hair dryer, I was then able to use Golden OPEN Acrylics to paint the rest over that toned canvas.

I started working on the basic placement of shapes, and then worked more and more toward contrasts and details. I use blu-tack to adhere the mini canvas to a larger piece of foam board. That way I can hold it securely in one hand when necessary, while painting with the other.

Athens Lighthouse from Hudson — Miniature Painting

1.5×2″, Golden Acrylics on 4-ply Rag Bristol, framed
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

These miniature gems are too much fun to be legal! This is a miniature version of an 8×10″ painting that I did en plein air in the spring. You can see that painting by clicking here. I enjoy doing different size versions of the same scene. It gives me a chance to play with the composition and colors and try to turn out something even better each time. In this case, I shortened the peninsula so that the eye has a path around it to travel to the lighthouse.

My miniature paintings come with a gift box and buyer’s choice of either a little table easel, or a golden thread affixed to the back and a tack for hanging salon style.

Here’s a slightly larger, cropped photo so that you can see the painting better. I wish this camera had a better lens so you could really see all the teeny tiny brushstrokes in there!

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-500v

So much goes into doing one of these miniatures. They take me longer than paintings many times the size. The first step in the process is to cut the support for the painting. In this case, I used four-ply Strathmore rag bristol. It’s a very expensive support, but at this size I could probably get 100 paintings from a sheet! I size that with Golden Matte Medium, because I love the way acrylic paint takes to that sized surface.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step1-450

Using a template previously cut to size for that frame, I place it on the new support and draw the rectangle around it. When I finish the painting, I’ll cut to the lines and will have a painting that will fit perfectly into the tiny frame.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step2-450

I put a tiny dot of blue-tack on the back of each corner, and affix my support to a piece of black foamcore that has also been sized with matte medium. The black helps reduce glare as I work, and makes it easier to support the tiny painting.

I set up my painting reference next to my easel, and put a photo reference of the scene up on the computer. I can zoom in and out of the photo reference to help me with the details, while using the color from my plein air piece.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step3-400

I sketched in my composition with just a few pencil lines, the coated the whole surface with Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide. That served the dual purpose of sealing the drawing and killing the white of the support.

091202-Athens-Lighthouse-Miniature-step4-400

This is as far as I was able to get without magnification! I have a goose neck lamp with a flourescent bulb and a built-in magnifying glass. I brought that over and worked a couple more hours to finish off the painting. The painting was then cut with an Xacto knife to fit in the frame.

For the sake of the photo of the finished painting, I put it into the frame temporarily. It will actually have to come out to be sealed and then varnished in a week or so. Once that is dry, it will be glued into the frame, and a backing put on that will cover the painting and frame from behind, so it will look like it came straight out of a high end frame shop!

Hopefully you now have an idea of what goes into turning out one of these little gems. They make great gift items.

Mary’s Boat at Sunset

This is a painting of my friend Mary’s boat, out on the lake beside our house at sunset. The clouds were especially spectacular that evening. It is painted on unstretched canvas, with artist grade oil paints, and mounted on rag board to give it a permanent, artist grade, archival support.

I ran out of varnish and had to drive all the way to Norwalk CT to get the kind I wanted! I spend the remainder of the day varnishing paintings and then priming panels…..No painting for the weary!

So, today’s painting is an older work that I enjoy a lot, which has not been shown here. It’s a 3×2″ miniature painting of my friend’s boat out on the lake. The painting is already framed in this elegant, gold wood frame. It is the perfect accessory for a side table, coffee table, dresser top, or shelf.

Peaceful Island Sunset framed and ready to hang

I found four gorgeous gold wood frames for miniatures in an art store, and am doing some paintings for these beautiful frames. It may sound a little bit backwards, but it works! The painting size is 3×5″, and with the frame it is about 6×8″.

This painting was done from a photo I took on a Lake George sunset cruise. The colors were just magnificent, and the little islands in the lake provided the perfect silhouetted foreground elements for the colorful backdrop.

Here is what the frame looks like with the painting, though I think the painting colors above are more accurate.

This little gem is just off my easel. My tiny paintings, which I fondly refer to as “Jamie’s Jewels”, make ideal holiday gifts. You can commission a favorite scene, or choose one of the unsold miniatures already available. They are only $100 and come gift-boxed. Take a look at some of them by clicking here and then scrolling down the page beyond this post.

You’ll see that they can be either on tiny, unframed, gallery-wrapped stretched canvases, or I can paint these postage stamp size minis and put them in beautiful gold frames. I ship them in gold gift boxes with gold ribbons, so they are ready to put under your tree or in Somebody Special’s Christmas stocking. They can be prepared to be hung on a wall, or set on a miniature easel like this one. Surprise a loved one this holiday season with a creative gift from the heart!

I took a photo of this painting with a tape dispenser so that you can better see the scale of this tiny work. The paintings are done under a magnification lamp with very small brushes, and actually take longer to do than paintings many times the size. Plus, they come beautifully framed!

This painting is a copy of the famous painting, Van Gogh’s Chair. The chair was a symbol of stability in his world of continual crisis. He painted this in December of 1888 through January 1889.

I love doing these tiny copies, as it makes me closely examine paintings that I so admire in terms of their composition, rendering style, and color harmonies.

This tiny Monet copy of his famous painting, Poppy Field Near Argenteuil, is set with a Coke can for size reference! These little ones can sometimes take longer than a much larger painting, and this one definitely fell into that category. I’ve painted this Monet scene before; it’s one of my favorite Monet paintings, and looks fabulous in this diminutive form! Here’s a picture of the painting alone, about actual size. Unfortunately, my camera doesn’t photograph these tiny paintings very well:

080704-mini-monet-com1-150.jpg

Here’s a slightly larger version too. I had to use a magnifying glass while painting to get some of the details in on the figures and the house!

080704-mini-monet-com1-250.jpg

The beautiful gold frame is actually a dollhouse frame. I cut the board to fit the frame, and then did the painting to size. It will be sealed and varnished, and will look just like a tiny oil painting in a frame. These miniatures can be purchased with a pin back so you can wear your art, or a gold thread for hanging from a brass tack, or a miniature easel to stand on a table. I ship them in gold gift boxes (as shown in the first image). They are often done on a commission basis, and you may commission any painting that no longer falls under copyright protection, or I can do an original for you.

I saw these tiny stretched canvases in an art supply store. They were just too cute to resist! I painted this sailboat and sunset from a photo I took when I was up in Bar Harbor, Maine. The painting will be shipped to you in a gold gift box, and with the mini easel. The nickel is there for size reference so you can see how tiny it is! This would make a perfect gift for your favorite sailor, or anybody who loves Bar Harbor and Maine as much as I do!

Here’s another image of it from the sides, so you can see the depth of the stretchers. I painted the sides with black acrylic. It looks really sharp!

I am finally getting a little tired of overcast mornings. I decided to do this one very small, and sat in front of one of my favorite fall trees to paint. The quarter is there for size reference; the painting is just 2″ square! I love the way the tree twists and bends. These tiny stretched canvases are just too cute.

The edges of the canvas are painted gold. The painting comes in a gold gift box with a gold bow, and the easel is included. Do your holiday shopping early.

The castle remains on Bannerman’s Island tower above the Hudson River like something out of a movie. While plein air painting on Bannerman’s Island, I took lots of photos of the views and castle ruins to work from in the studio. This is a view of the Armory side entrance from the path above. The painting is a diminutive 2.75″ square, and sits perfectly on the easel to liven up any spot in your home with a piece of Hudson River history. The canvas edges are painted gold as shown below, for the gem-like quality that these miniatures evoke.

Although small, these minis take as much time to paint as their larger counterparts. I love the way they look and the charm of the small scale.

1.5×2″, acrylic on 100% rag archival bristol, framed to 2×2.5″ and including hanging hardware, gift boxed
This painting is done from a photo I took on an expedition to Little Cranberry Island off the coast of Maine. This weathered Maine boathouse was right on the shore of the bay. I’ve been wanting to paint this scene for a long time, and may do a larger version as well at some point.

If you haven’t yet begun a collection of “Jamie’s Jewels”, this is a perfect one to start you off in style! Remember too that Mother’s Day is coming. This would make an ideal gift and arrives in a little gold box. This one is slightly larger than my other recent micro paintings, by about 1/4″ (hence the slightly higher price tag).

You can click the image above to see it even larger. Just to give you an idea of the actual size of this painting, here’s an image that approximates the size, depending on your monitor and resolution. You can appreciate how teeny tiny it really is, and how much detail goes into these wee gems:

Here’s another gorgeous micro reproduction painting. I was looking through a book of Impressionist painters and came across this painting by Alfred Sisley. I fell in love with the brushwork and colors in this gorgeous impressionist landscape painting. The image above shows the painting about actual size. Below is an enlargement of it. The quarter is for size reference purposes. (Click for further enlargement) They also look wonderful displayed as a group collection.

It will arrive in a gold foil gift box with cotton batting and a gold ribbon, to complete the perfect gift for any art lover. If you prefer, a pin back can be affixed in place of the hanging hardware. Just email me if you want me to make that change.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was the only English member of the original Impressionist group. He died without receiving the recognition he deserved, overcome by cancer and in poverty. He is best known for his landscapes of the countryside around Paris, and studied in the Gleyre studio beside Renoir and Monet.

I was so excited by the way this looked once I attached the hanging hardware and gold thread. It will be the perfect gem to hang from a brass tack in a small nook on the wall, or above a mantle. They’d be fun to collect over time, and a grouping of them will make an elegant tiny gallery of “The Masters”! Plus, the little gold boxes I ordered for the minis have arrived! I just had to bump up this post and add the photo of the painting with all the fixings and fittings, the way it will be sent to you! (The quarter is there as a size reference only.)

Do you have a favorite painting by a “master” that you’d like to see as one of my Micro Master Series works? If so, please email me with the name of the artist and painting!

Here’s the painting below about actual size, depending on your monitor and resolution:

This “micro” is my rendition of Van Gogh’s famous painting, Starry Night. I love doing these little copies. It gives me an opportunity to really study a master painting, from the color to the brushstrokes.

This has been painted and framed with archival materials. It will be shipped in a beautiful gold box with cotton batting. It will be sent as shown above, with hanging rings affixed and a gold string to hang it “salon style”. If you would prefer it with a pin back, I can remove the little eye rings for the thread, and attach a pin back instead.

1×1.25″, acrylic on bristol board, framed to 2×2.25″

This charming miniature, based on Matisse’ famous 1944 painting “Annelies”, is in a gold wood frame. It can be sent either with a pin back, or with a gold string to hang ‘salon style’. (Specify which you’d like.) Tiny minis like this can also be beautifully displayed on small tabletop easels. It will be sent in a little gold box, just like a tiny treasure.

I chose a challenging subject for such a tiny copy and it took me ages to get all the details in place. The painting itself measures 1×1.25″. With the frame, it is 2×2.25″. The quarter is in the photo for size reference. It’s hard to appreciate the intricate detailing of this piece when seeing it online at larger than actual size!

The image below is approximately actual size, depending on your monitor resolution:

This is one of those pieces that’s hard for me to let go of. I definitely want to do more of them. I’ve selected a Van Gogh painting for my next tiny copy!
