"It's spectacular, Jamie!!! How talented you are! We absolutely love it! And you are right-the frame is just perfect for it! "

"Happy" with it is an understatement! My sister's husband said, "Wow, it's beautiful!" That's a lot of emotion coming from him! haha. And my adult daughter said, "OMG MOM, ITS GORGEOUS!". You have added to your fan club!

"Jamie, your painting arrived in perfect condition! And, as I expected, it looks even better ‘in person’ than on the computer screen. Thank you so much for your careful packing and wonderful painting."

"...Today I finally surprised [my wife] with the actual painting! It is her birthday! And I just wanted to let you know the we both absolutely love it!! She was so so surprised, and just speechless.... Thank you again for being so flexible and good to work with! "I love the new painting! It's actually a little more golden and fluid than it looks in the pic and I love the movement; everything in my house is a little on the warm and yellow and gold side so it could hang pretty much anywhere. "I just wanted to share that my father-in-law absolutely LOVES your painting. He loves the frame and said that he's never owned a real oil painting. 😊 But most importantly, he loves the subject matter and he and my husband spent a lot of time reminiscing this morning about hikes they took there years ago. This part of the Hudson is, by far, their favorite! Thank you SO much for making this Christmas gift PERFECT."

"Your paintings of my beloved Hudson Valley are stunning! I've always loved Hudson River paintings, and can't believe that I've found someone who is following in the great tradition of Cropsey and company! "

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

His Eye is on the Sparrow 600v

7×5″ oil painting in a cherry and gold, oval wood frame
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I’ve been wanting to do a series of bird paintings for such a long time! I bought a new camera with a long telephoto lens to get some good images to work with, and some beautiful, wood frames in cherry with a gold inner lip. Since it’s so difficult to get oval frames to fit, I figured I’d sell these already framed.

This first one is an Eastern Phoebe who has taken up residence under the gutter outside my kitchen window. The cute couple has a nest resting on a downspout there. This little guy is out there posing for me all the time. This one sold before I even had a chance to put it up here on my website, but there will be more to come soon if you’ve fallen in love with him.

I found a wonderful park in the mountains for walking, photography and painting. It’s called Windham Path. Whoever designed it kept the path winding around clusters of trees, through fields to magical mountain views, and alongside streams. The path is gravel and constructed with great drainage, so even after a rain, it’s not muddy. My husband and I had some great walks here, and I went back in late fall with my paints. I’m sure I’ll be painting much more of it next season, but I was fortunate to have come across it at peak foliage time! Below is an image you can click on for a larger view of the painting:

This autumn painting was done from one of my favorite spots along the Hudson — Little Stony Point in Cold Spring. A short walk through the woods is rewarded by a sandy beach facing some of the most beautiful scenery along the river. This view faces west toward Crow’s Nest Mountain. What could be better than painting with a good friend along the Hudson River on a beautiful, unseasonably warm day in late fall? Not much! I always enjoy the view of Storm King and the Hudson from the western vantage point of this park. Sometimes I think that plein air painting is just an excuse to get out and enjoy the scenery! I really love this view from Frederic Church’s Olana estate. It takes me back to the heart of the Hudson River School, overlooking the farms and fields where it first began, and Church’s first home on the property there. I’ve painted the scene in different seasons and formats. This was my first go at 2:1 panoramic proportions. I am liking this ratio for the scene! Here it is in its glory, with the summer greens, lower fields and far-off hillsides. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the scene:

This oil painting was done on location at the Olana Historic Site, home to Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. The foliage across the pond was bursting with fall color!

This is Hudson River School artist Frederic Church’s original home on his Olana estate. He lived here in “Cosy Cottage” before building the huge mansion atop the hill overlooking the Hudson River. I love this view from the side, with the hill in the distance and farm fields below. I’ve been painting it for a couple of years in different seasons and formats, and checking it out at different times of day to see the lighting variations. I really want to do a very large painting of the scene, so in the meantime, I’m exploring what form that will take! Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

This is a view from Hudson River School painter Frederic Church’s homestead, Olana. It was painted on location at a spot close to where one of his studios was located on the property. The pond, Hudson River, and Catskill Mountains are all visible in the scene with the drama of the sunset. I never get tired of painting at Olana!

I’ve had a really hard time getting a decent photo of this painting, so I’ll just say that the photo cannot do this one justice! Below is an image that you can click on to get a larger, clearer view of the image, but it still doesn’t look nearly as nice as the actual painting!

Rockwood is one of my favorite spots along the Hudson. There are views of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the wonderful lighthouse. However, a large residential facility was built along the shoreline in this direction that completely ruins the rural vista. I keep my memory of the way it used to be alive by always painting it that way!

Driving into the Catskill Mountains through Kaaterskill Clove on Route 23a, there is a spectacular waterfall around a horseshoe bend in the road. A large sign there marks the trailhead for Kaaterskill Falls, and so many people mistakenly think this lovely cascade is the famous Kaaterskill Falls. Beautiful as it is, clearly it is not in the running for the title of the tallest waterfall in New York State, but it is certainly much easier to get to! It’s another half mile up a steep and rocky mountain trail to arrive at the base of Kaaterskill, so I can almost understand those who would rather mistake it than do the hike!

I actually don’t mind doing the hike, so when I go here, I’m always hiking all they way up to the larger falls and painting Kaaterskill. I figured it was time to give this little beauty its due, so I planned a day to paint with friends at the more diminutive (but still gorgeous) Bastion Falls. I found it a more difficult subect than Kaaterskill in spite of its smaller size, and loved both the location and the challenge.

This painting has been in progress for a really long time. I spent a few days out on location painting the falls, trying to capture the light very early in the morning, while the foreground was still in shadow. I worked on it in between in the studio. I love this old maple tree that overhangs the creek. Once the summer greens take hold, it’s much harder to appreciate the shape and structure of these stately, graceful residents. I don’t often get out here to paint before the meadow beyond it loses the golden color, but this year I was determined.

The waterfalls by my house are raging this time of year as the snow melts up on the mountain. This waterfall is always the first one to dry up, so I was determined to paint this one first! Most years, by the time I get out there, it’s already dry. It used to be a split waterfall, running in two cascades, but for some reason, that second water trail is blocked, so I just painted it as a single fall. I’ll have to climb up there to see what’s blocking the left side! The most dramatic feature to this waterfall is the large, white slab of rock that juts off to the right.

My husband and I love to go on sunset expeditions with our cameras. This is Croton Point Park near sunset, facing south. The cold, bare winter trees provided an elegant contrast with the warmth of the colorful sunset. Their graceful silhouettes add so much to the composition, and allow for plenty of color to come through until the spring leaves fill out the forms and obscure the view.

This huge bobcat came to visit us several times during the winter! I set up my telephoto lens so that I’d be ready for him, and managed to capture a few good shots for photo references. It was a brutal winter for wildlife — so cold that our creek froze over a couple of times, which hardly ever happens. Apparently the bobcat found it easier to walk along the ice than through the deep snow. I saw him a few times cruising the brook like this, perhaps in search of ducks or geese, or whatever else he could find in that brutal weather.

This little Hooded Merganser was hanging around on the brook from time to time this winter. I watched and photographed him from the kitchen window, along with a visiting bobcat, and hoped the little guy wouldn’t become “dinner”. It was a terrible winter to be a duck in the northeast. Even our brook froze over for days at a time, which almost never happens. I’m hoping spring is finally on the way. I can’t wait to get out for some plein air painting again!

This little cottage overlooking the fields at Olana was the home of Hudson River School artist, Frederic Church. He lived here before he built the giant mansion up on top of the hillside. It is surrounded by a different kind of beauty and charm than his castle in the sky overlooking the Hudson River.

This is one of my favorite fall vistas. Winter gives me an opportunity to paint some scenes I wish I’d had time to do out on location, while conditions were still peak. I do hope to get back to this spot for a nice, large plein air piece, but at least I was able to capture from a photo in the meantime! The fall colors come and go so quickly; there’s never time to paint everything I want to then, before the leaves fall and the landscape loses its color.
