------------------------------------------ If you haven't seen the two-DVD set, "The Impressionists", you don't know what you're missing!

    the-impressionists.jpg

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

This fall painting was done standing along the lakeshore at the DEC North South Lake Campground. There were fisherman and kayakers, as well as changing light, especially since I had to make a return trip to finish the painting. But the biggest change of all was when a DEC work crew came to trim the foliage I was painting! The guys were so nice, and agreed to leave this foreground tree alone so that I could finish the painting. Below is an image that you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

I found a wonderful park in the mountains for walking, photography and painting. It’s called Windham Path. Whoever designed it kept the path winding around clusters of trees, through fields to magical mountain views, and alongside streams. The path is gravel and constructed with great drainage, so even after a rain, it’s not muddy. My husband and I had some great walks here, and I went back in late fall with my paints. I’m sure I’ll be painting much more of it next season, but I was fortunate to have come across it at peak foliage time! Below is an image you can click on for a larger view of the painting:

This painting was recently rented for a gallery scene in the new, upcoming HBO series, “Divorce”! It was exciting to work with a production company. I was impressed with the way they handled all the details in such a short time frame. I’m looking forward to seeing three of my paintings, including this one, in the final episode of the first season. There was no word on when the series was going to air, but possibly over the summer or in the fall.

The Thorn Preserve in Woodstock, New York is a favorite painting spot that I’ve discovered this past year. Every season has its unique aura there. The light strikes the eastern side of Overlook Mountain very early in the morning, and the tall trees cast their long shadows over the paths carved into the grasses and wildflowers. By 9:00 or so, that’s all gone as the sun rises above the tree line. On this particular day, the purplish blossoms were just starting to fade. I went back a couple of days later, and they were all gone! Below is an image that you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

This autumn painting was done from one of my favorite spots along the Hudson — Little Stony Point in Cold Spring. A short walk through the woods is rewarded by a sandy beach facing some of the most beautiful scenery along the river. This view faces west toward Crow’s Nest Mountain. This large, colorful, splashy acrylic was painted on site at Olana, overlooking the Hudson River. It’s probably my favorite Hudson River view, and I’ve painted it on location a number of times in smaller formats. I always think about how many Hudson River School painters stood in this very spot, gazing at the distant Catskill Mountains while trying to capture the light and scenery here.

I didn’t have a setup to photograph large works very well until recently, so this large spring scene hasn’t yet made its debut on my website! It’s a perfect size for over a sofa, mantle or dining room wall.

What could be better than painting with a good friend along the Hudson River on a beautiful, unseasonably warm day in late fall? Not much! I always enjoy the view of Storm King and the Hudson from the western vantage point of this park. Sometimes I think that plein air painting is just an excuse to get out and enjoy the scenery! I really love this view from Frederic Church’s Olana estate. It takes me back to the heart of the Hudson River School, overlooking the farms and fields where it first began, and Church’s first home on the property there. I’ve painted the scene in different seasons and formats. This was my first go at 2:1 panoramic proportions. I am liking this ratio for the scene! Here it is in its glory, with the summer greens, lower fields and far-off hillsides. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the scene:

This was painted on location at a horse rescue farm. The rolling hills and tree lines made for a beautiful setting. There are several wonderful views of Croton Gorge Dam, and great vistas from the bridge at the top as well. I was in a splashy acrylic mood on this day, and let the drips and splatters become part of the painting. This was painted mostly with the Golden High Flow acrylics, which have an ink-like consistency. They form a permanent shield just like other acrylics, so that they get sealed, varnished, and framed without glass, just like oil paintings. Below is an image that you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting. Stay tuned for the view from the top, coming up in a few days.

This scene was painted at North South Lake Campground in the Catskill Mountains. Just as I was thinking it could use a little splash of color, three kayakers came along to help me out! This is a little plein air piece from along my driveway. I’ve painted here in every season; it’s an easy spot for me to get to! Perhaps someday I should have a show of driveway paintings because I do paint there frequently. I liked the way the rock outcropping illuminated at the end of the road in the morning light, and the colorful wildflowers lining the sides of the path.

This is one of those scenes that I had my eye on for a year or so before I had a chance to get out there and paint it. The location is very close to a dramatic waterfall, so I always ended up painting the falls instead! I went out there several days in a row, and so finally had the opportunity to sit by the quiet, meandering stream with my paints.

This is Hudson River School artist Frederic Church’s original home on his Olana estate. He lived here in “Cosy Cottage” before building the huge mansion atop the hill overlooking the Hudson River. I love this view from the side, with the hill in the distance and farm fields below. I’ve been painting it for a couple of years in different seasons and formats, and checking it out at different times of day to see the lighting variations. I really want to do a very large painting of the scene, so in the meantime, I’m exploring what form that will take! Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

After a full day of painting, I usually go out on the patio and relax with a tall glass of iced tea and my little dog, BB. I sit in a comfortable chair and admire the hanging plants, backlit by the late afternoon sun, and enhanced by the dark trees in the background. I’ve always wanted to paint them, but by that point in the day, I’m just too tired to pull out my paints again. Eventually I did get around to painting them though, as you can see!

This is a view from Hudson River School painter Frederic Church’s homestead, Olana. It was painted on location at a spot close to where one of his studios was located on the property. The pond, Hudson River, and Catskill Mountains are all visible in the scene with the drama of the sunset. I never get tired of painting at Olana!

Driving into the Catskill Mountains through Kaaterskill Clove on Route 23a, there is a spectacular waterfall around a horseshoe bend in the road. A large sign there marks the trailhead for Kaaterskill Falls, and so many people mistakenly think this lovely cascade is the famous Kaaterskill Falls. Beautiful as it is, clearly it is not in the running for the title of the tallest waterfall in New York State, but it is certainly much easier to get to! It’s another half mile up a steep and rocky mountain trail to arrive at the base of Kaaterskill, so I can almost understand those who would rather mistake it than do the hike!

I actually don’t mind doing the hike, so when I go here, I’m always hiking all they way up to the larger falls and painting Kaaterskill. I figured it was time to give this little beauty its due, so I planned a day to paint with friends at the more diminutive (but still gorgeous) Bastion Falls. I found it a more difficult subect than Kaaterskill in spite of its smaller size, and loved both the location and the challenge.
