This is the same old maple tree that I did the other day in a monochrome rendering, but from the other side, and in a different medium. This tree presents the most interesting study from any angle. This is a miniature watercolor of the scene I posted yesterday. Everybody has room for one of these little gems. They look charming either framed and hung, or displayed on tabletop easels. This was also painted on location at Frederic Church’s Olana estate, a home of the Hudson River School movement.

I love this vantage point down by the barns at Olana, with the eastern view. I’ve done three oil paintings from here, but always wanted to do a longer format. So, here it is in watercolor! I did a miniature version too, which I’ll post tomorrow or Friday. My husband was taking a photography workshop here, so I got to hang out and paint!

This was a drawing I did from the studio window on a rainy day. I’ve been wanting to sketch or paint this view for a long time and finally got my chance! I was looking at sketches last week by Hudson River School artist BBG Stone, and became captivated by the way he would zero in on his focal point in a certain area of his drawing, leaving the rest in a more unfinished state. I liked the way it created a vignette within the scene, and I’m looking forward to exploring this style in my drawings and sketches.
Usually I use this approach of a dark and a light on midtone paper in the figure studio, but BBG Stone employed it very successfully in many of his landscape sketches, so I had to give it a go too. I loved working this way! More like this will definitely follow in the near future!

After doing the three miniatures shown over the past few days, I did a larger version, borrowing from what I liked in the others, as well as responding to changing lighting at the scene. I really wanted to convey the glistening hillside in the afternoon sunlight.

I did a series of small watercolor paintings from Olana over the past week. The home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church is a place near and dear to my heart. I’ve been wanting to paint this hillside view toward Mount Merino for a long time! It was done from one of the carriage roads on the property. I was drawn to the way the near hillside is illuminated in the sunlight, framed by Mount Merino behind it.
This painting has been double matted so that you can pop it into any standard 5×7″ frame.

Deep in the woods is a stunning waterfall with clear water, rusty colors, and striking rock outcroppings, set in a hemlock grove. I often hike there with my husband, but this was my first time going with paints and an easel. I also used the opportunity to test drive a new easel setup, which I loved. More on that coming soon!
Here is my easel and painting at the scene when I was almost finished. You can see that by then the sun had shifted quite a bit. Much is in shadow in the photo that was very visible to the human eye:

Now that I know I can easily hike there with this easel, I’m looking forward to going back and taking on a bigger painting!

I went to paint at my friend Melissa’s family farm, and was captivated by this composition from the field, with the fence line leading to the barn. There’s so much to paint there. She has the sweetest cows, who will lick you to death if you dare to cross the fence line!

This is one of my favorite late day/sunset locations. It was also a favorite spot of Hudson River School painters Thomas Cole and Jasper Cropsey! I haven’t done many watercolor paintings lately, so I pulled those out for a nice change of pace.

This is such a magnificent waterfall and a beautiful place to paint. Lots of folks come to swim and take in the dramatic falls on hot days. It involves a bit of a trek through overgrown brush, a steep slope, and a train track crossing, but is well worth the effort!

I had so much fun at this waterfall on a hot afternoon! There are several swimming spots within this waterfall, and several people were taking advantage of that way to beat the heat.

Usually when I’m at Olana, I’m painting the famous vista of the Hudson River. But this time I walked along a side trail and was captivated by the view of distant farms, and the bands of cool and warm colors in the landscape. Frederic Church was one lucky painter to be able to walk these hills every day!

Late in the afternoon, the sun ducks behind the tree line, and Pomeroy Falls lies in shadow for the rest of the day. The foreground, further out from the tree line, is still able to catch the sun’s rays for another hour or so, illuminating the tree in front and some of the ground foliage. I thought it would be interesting to paint this scene with the subdued waterfall, which would be the natural focal point in light, and letting the foreground steal the show.

The day after a big rainfall, my friend Gretchen and I decided to venture to Pomeroy Falls to experience the waterfall at its most dramatic. It did not disappoint! We planned for a full day of painting, so I had enough time to pull out a large panel. I love painting with Golden Fluid Acrylics and Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid. When I get immersed in this medium, I often wonder why I ever paint with anything else!

We had a really moody day on Plum Point last week, with the sun peeking in and out of clouds and an occasional threatening-looking cloud passing overhead. This is the view looking south through the Hudson Highlands, with Storm King Mountain on the right side. You can see the cut in the mountain where Route 9W winds around it. Fortunately the rain held off and I got to not only finish my painting, but complete a sketch for The Sketchbook Project 2012 too!

It seems to me that whenever our painting group goes to the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, most of the artists prefer to paint the high view from up behind the mansion, or to spend the day painting in the beautiful Italian Gardens there. (You can check out my gouache sketch from up behind the mansion here.) But I’m always drawn to the Bard Rock section of the property down along the shoreline of the Hudson River. There are dramatic rock outcroppings there and beautiful trees along the river’s edge. Sometimes the color of the water is just too beautiful to believe. This was one of those magical days when the warm and cool colors mingled. I found a shady spot to paint that was surrounded by strong contrasts. I hadn’t been here for a long time, and I don’t think I ever painted from this exact spot before. The tide went out quickly, revealing more and more of the rocks that were nearly all underwater when I first arrived. It was another dreamy day painting along the Hudson.

I had a wonderful time painting with friends at the Vanderbilt Mansion with friends. This large, old estate sits along the Hudson River in Hyde Park, and is now owned by the New York State Park System. Most of our group painted up by the mansion and in the gardens, but when I come here, I love to paint down by the river. There’s always lots of shade, a cool breeze, and interesting rocks and trees to paint along the shoreline.
The water nearly covered those rocks when I started the painting. You can see how much the tide went out since then!
The painting is too wet to get a decent photo of it now. I tried, but there was glare everywhere. I’ll have to wait for it to dry a bit before I can get a photo to post. In the meantime, you can enjoy a view of my office for the day!

Opposite the Thomas Cole house in Catskill, New York, there is a row of beautiful Victorian homes. My friend Karen and I set up to paint up on the hillside, in the cool shade on the grounds of the Thomas Cole Historic Site. A couple of bicycle riders went by as I painted, and I thought it was much nicer to put them in the painting than all the cars that whizzed past!

Today I went to Rondout Landing in Kingston, behind the Hudson River Maritime Museum. I planned to paint the replica of Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, but it was docked in a terrible location that didn’t allow for a good view of the whole ship, or even a decent view of just the front. There was plenty to paint at that site though! I walked a little ways down the landing and found this view that I really liked.
When I finished my oil painting, I found a place where I could sketch a portion of the boat. Here is my sketch of the stern section. I’ll have to paint the Half Moon at one of its other stops as it makes its way down the Hudson. Hopefully I will find a better vantage point somewhere else.

It was so hot out today that my friend Mara and I were trying to decide whether to stay in the studio and paint the wildflowers I picked this morning, or venture out into the yard in the heat. We went exploring, finding shade and irresistible views at the base of the little waterfall. It was surprisingly cool there with my feet in the cold water while I painted! I was attracted to the strong contrasts of the shadow side of the rock and white of the bubbling water catching the light, combined with the transparency of the cool pool below where the light penetrated the surface.

I was painting up in Amenia, New York today. This distant view looked like a winding river of grass through the hills! There were a lot of clouds in the sky, which were forever changing the lights and darks in the landscape. I liked it best when the light illuminated the “river”, and tried to capture those moments in the painting.

It was supposed to rain today, but when I woke up to sunshine and clear skies, I knew I had to go out painting! I went to Stonecrop Gardens in Cold Spring-on-Hudson, and after walking all around taking photos, I settled down in this comfy spot in the shade and did this painting of the main house and apple trees.

I’ve been wanting to paint this waterfall for such a long time! Over half of it is this beautiful rock ledge covered with the most gorgeous green moss I’ve ever seen. I finally had my opportunity when the sun broke out briefly on Saturday. I did end up having to pack up quickly in the rain and finish it up in the studio, but it was a thrill to be out there painting for awhile. As far as I know, this waterfall has no name, so I call it Mossy Falls. I’d guess it to be about 25-30 feet high.

This painting was started on location in the apple orchard at Lasdon Arboretum in Somers, New York. I was about a half hour away from completion when thick clouds moved in and it started to rain! I had to pack up quickly and return home. Fortunately, I got a photo while the light was still good, and finished it from the photograph.

Every spring I go to paint the Cherry Blossom trees at Boscobel Restoration, high above Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River across from West Point. This spring I was sure I’d missed the boat in terms of the cherry blossoms, so I was thrilled to see a few trees still in full bloom when I arrived there yesterday morning. The marsh still has its nice spring color — orangy red in the morning, turning to dark violet by late afternoon as the sun marches across the sky. In a few weeks, that will all give way to the greens of summer, and all of the extraordinary color will be gone.
