I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

This little oil painting was done in late fall on location. My friend Trish and I hiked out to the boardwalk at Constitution Marsh to spend a gorgeous day out on the Hudson River. The property is an Audubon Preserve, and there are always eagles and interesting wildlife around. I had to pick out a few bugs and do some touchups afterwards, so it’s taken me awhile to finish it up and get it posted. The atmosphere was so quiet that day, with barely a ripple in the water and a cloudless sky. Dreamy!

I’ve been wanting to do more paintings of the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse (aka Tarrytown Lighthouse) for years, and finally got around to doing some this week. I spent two days exploring six or seven of the parks along the Hudson River around Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow to find some new vantage points and check out old ones. Now I have so many ideas for paintings that my head is spinning! This 6×8″ painting features the lighthouse, and also shows the Tappan Zee Bridge in the background, as well as the little bridge over to the lighthouse from the shore.

One thing I found out in this week’s research is that the lighthouse was originally about a half mile off shore. The shoreline was filled in for various developments, and now it’s just a footbridge away! There’s a ton of construction going on in the area now, as those old commercial developments have mostly been torn down to make way for new luxury high rise condominiums. The good news is that in the process, several gorgeous waterfront “Riverwalks” have sprung up, thanks in no small part to Scenic Hudson. Although the population density is increasing dramatically, so are the accessible views.

I had a wonderful autumn day last week painting with friends along the Hudson River. We went to Boscobel Restoration in Garrison NY, where there is a long bluff overlooking Constitution Marsh and the river. The marsh was just starting to take on that reddish autumn glow, and an enormous sailing yacht went by, providing a great focal point out in the river. This is always one of my favorite vistas to paint — especially as the marsh turns to warm colors in spring and fall.

This view of Crawford Notch, New Hampshire, was painted by many of the Hudson River School artists, who traveled up to the White Mountains to take in the spectacular scenery. Saco Lake lies just north of the notch, reflecting the mountain and amplifying the drama of the setting. The white rock on the left side of the notch is called Elephant Head. You can hike up there for majestic views in all directions. When I’m able to do a larger painting of the scene, you’ll be able to see why it’s called Elephant Head! Paintings are underway of views from up there too.

I’ve been doing a bunch of paintings from photos I took during our recent trip to New Hampshire. We took the cog railway up Mt. Washington one day (great fun!) and enjoyed the majestic views of the Presidential Range from the top. The Appalachian Trail runs along the tops of several of the mountains, following the ridge line on the journey up to Maine. I captured this view of a lone hiker on the ridge and couldn’t wait to get my brushes going on it.

Many of the Hudson River School painters traveled to the White Mountains. I visited a number of the spots where they painted on my trip, and it’s not hard to see why they were so inspired by the views they encountered!

This Hudson River School site in the Catskill Mountains is one of my favorite hike destinations. I go up there several times a year, and understand why it was also a favorite of the Hudson River School painters! This is probably destined to be my last Sunset Rock painting before the fall colors take hold.

Speaking of the Hudson River School, for those who have not gone to the Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill NY to see the Sanford Gifford show, you have until October 29 to do that. I just went back for the second time, and it’s truly a “Don’t Miss It” exhibit for those who love Hudson River School art, art history, and hiking in the Catskills. The show focuses on Gifford’s paintings done in the Catskill Mountains, and provides site information for where they were all painted too. There is also a show catalog available at the Visitor Center there.

Tucked away behind North Mountain, in the northeastern region of the Catskill Mountains, there is a beautiful resort called Winter Clove Inn. This fabulous view of the northern gateway to the Hudson Highlands is one of my favorite Hudson River vistas. You can see Bannerman Island, with Storm King Mountain on the right, and Breakneck Ridge in Cold Spring on the left. I painted it from a photo, taken with a telephoto lens at a distance, which amplifies the atmospheric effects of the distance. Infused with the blues and greens of summer, it exudes tranquility. We can all use a bit of that! This is a large painting with an expansive feel, and would be a great centerpiece over a sofa. Sunset Rock was a favorite destination of many of the Hudson River School artists. It’s long been one of my own favorite locations as well. This western view overlooking North South Lake is well known, but the south-facing view is equally engaging.

Below you can see a photo of the painting in progress on location. It sometimes takes awhile for me to get paintings photographed and up on my website; in this case, the painting sold before I had a chance to post it here.

I’ve been working on a large commissioned painting of this scene overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. Wave Hill is a public garden in Riverdale, New York. This painting features an expansive vista overlooking Candlewood Lake in Connecticut. There were long lake views in both directi161114-birds-eye-view-6x9-ac-600ons, and a western, sunset exposure to boot. I took so many photos when I was there, and can’t wait to do more paintings from them during the winter. I’ll return for some plein air versions when the weather warms up again. I’m calling this one Bird’s Eye View, but they could probably all have that title, with views in both directions that seem to go on forever.

I love this scene and have been playing with it in various color combinations for nearly two years. There are so many ways to interpret the composition in terms of light, season, focal point, and color palette, that I can’t seem to get tired of it! It’s a view of the lake at Innisfree Gardens. This most recent rendering is in fall colors, with the late day light striking the eastern hillsides and distant mountain before sunset. It’s not often that I find a vertical composition I really like of a Boscobel scene. I usually paint that vista in a panoramic fashion, but the path of the marsh channels works well this way too. Maybe there is a new series of verticals coming! It would certainly be a different way for me to explore this landscape that I’ve been painting for so many years.

This was painted on location at Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, New York, toward the end of one of those stellar, long, summer days. The scene overlooks Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River. Helicopters were flying overhead in formation from West Point as I painted!

I spent a magical day painting at Boscobel. The weather was ideal, and a huge buck was staring at me from the distance. (Expect to see a painting of him soon!) There was tug and barge traffic out on the river, helicopter formations flying overhead from West Point, and good company with other artists. It’s hard to beat a day like that.

I have painted this scene many times out on location in Beacon. It is where Fishkill Creek enters into the Hudson River at Madam Brett Park. Although beautiful in all seasons, the marsh and foliage blazes with warm color in Autumn. For that reason, I selected this scene to portray the “Red Orange” painting of my recent series, Hudson Valley Hues. The painting is currently available at RiverWinds Gallery (see link above), and will be offered at a special price only for the duration of the show.
