I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

This large painting of the Hudson River and Palisades was done as a commission, so it is already spoken for. You can see some available paintings I have of the Palisades and Hudson River by clicking the categories on the right side of my website, or click here to pull up my Palisade paintings, then scroll down to see them. Large paintings are very difficult to store, so I generally do them on a commission basis. I’m always happy to paint a special commission for you if you don’t see the size/scene/season you’re looking for!

Sunset Rock was a favorite destination of many of the Hudson River School artists. It’s long been one of my own favorite locations as well. This western view overlooking North South Lake is well known, but the south-facing view is equally engaging.

Below you can see a photo of the painting in progress on location. It sometimes takes awhile for me to get paintings photographed and up on my website; in this case, the painting sold before I had a chance to post it here.

My husband and I were out hiking on a beautiful fall day in the Hudson Valley. I snapped a photo of this couple walking down the trail, which became a great painting subject. This painting went out to my Hudson Valley Hues solo show at RiverWinds gallery before I had a chance to put it up on my website, and has sold at the show. Thank you, RiverWinds! The show will run until July 3 for anybody who has not yet had a chance to go see it. The gallery is at 172 Main Street, Beacon, NY. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Monday, 12-6pm, closed Tuesdays.

I have painted this scene many times out on location in Beacon. It is where Fishkill Creek enters into the Hudson River at Madam Brett Park. Although beautiful in all seasons, the marsh and foliage blazes with warm color in Autumn. For that reason, I selected this scene to portray the “Red Orange” painting of my recent series, Hudson Valley Hues. The painting is currently available at RiverWinds Gallery (see link above), and will be offered at a special price only for the duration of the show.

His Eye is on the Sparrow 600v

7×5″ oil painting in a cherry and gold, oval wood frame
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I’ve been wanting to do a series of bird paintings for such a long time! I bought a new camera with a long telephoto lens to get some good images to work with, and some beautiful, wood frames in cherry with a gold inner lip. Since it’s so difficult to get oval frames to fit, I figured I’d sell these already framed.

This first one is an Eastern Phoebe who has taken up residence under the gutter outside my kitchen window. The cute couple has a nest resting on a downspout there. This little guy is out there posing for me all the time. This one sold before I even had a chance to put it up here on my website, but there will be more to come soon if you’ve fallen in love with him.

Blossoms at Thorn Preserve

This painting was recently rented for a gallery scene in the new, upcoming HBO series, “Divorce”! It was exciting to work with a production company. I was impressed with the way they handled all the details in such a short time frame. I’m looking forward to seeing three of my paintings, including this one, in the final episode of the first season. There was no word on when the series was going to air, but possibly over the summer or in the fall.

The Thorn Preserve in Woodstock, New York is a favorite painting spot that I’ve discovered this past year. Every season has its unique aura there. The light strikes the eastern side of Overlook Mountain very early in the morning, and the tall trees cast their long shadows over the paths carved into the grasses and wildflowers. By 9:00 or so, that’s all gone as the sun rises above the tree line. On this particular day, the purplish blossoms were just starting to fade. I went back a couple of days later, and they were all gone! Below is an image that you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

20×30″, Acrylic on stretched canvas
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

This large, colorful, splashy acrylic was painted on site at Olana, overlooking the Hudson River. It’s probably my favorite Hudson River view, and I’ve painted it on location a number of times in smaller formats. I always think about how many Hudson River School painters stood in this very spot, gazing at the distant Catskill Mountains while trying to capture the light and scenery here.

I didn’t have a setup to photograph large works very well until recently, so this large spring scene hasn’t yet made its debut on my website! It’s a perfect size for over a sofa, mantle or dining room wall.

These miniature paintings, which I call “Jamie’s Jewels”, are usually done on a commission basis. In spite of the diminutive size, they are done under magnification, and are very time consuming. After being painted, they are varnished, framed, photographed, and sold with the miniature easel included. They are shipped in little gold gift boxes with gold bows, and make the ideal present for that Special Someone! This one is a miniature copy of one of Monet’s many beautiful renderings of the Houses of Parliament.

Miniature Painting — Paris Street Scene after Caillebotte

Posted by Jamie on November 25th, 2015

SAMSUNG CSC

3″ across, acrylic on 100% rag board

SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter who lived from 1848-1894. He is considered one of the painters of the French Impressionist school, though looking at his work, one would never think that! His paintings are more firmly rooted in realism, with its harder edges and more muted color schemes than so many of his contemporaries. In addition to being a wonderful painter, Caillebotte had a law degree with a license to practice, and was also an engineer. Talk about a multi-talented individual!

I was commissioned to do this miniature version of Caillebotte’s 7 foot by 9 foot Paris street scene. Online images of the painting appeared quite cool in color, but then the client sent me a photo he took of the painting in a museum. That image showed many more ochres and browns. I preferred that slightly warmer interpretation, and went for something in between in my own version.

Scaling down an enormous, mural-like painting to 3″ across is no easy task. I imagined that the actual painting in real life is much more painterly than when it’s shrunk down to a tiny fraction of its size, as we see on a computer screen. Aside from the technical difficulties of putting in all that detail in a tiny painting, it would lose much of its character. It required considerable editing to keep enough detail in there without overwhelming the small space. I’d like to believe I successfully met that challenge!

My miniature works are all sent in gold gift boxes with table easels for a curio cabinet or side table, and most are framed too. (See below.) They are usually done as commissions, but occasionally I have one on hand, ready to go to a new home. They make fabulous gift items. Here are images of some of my miniature originals. These three are spoken for, but I’d be happy to do one for you!

Rockwood is one of my favorite spots along the Hudson. There are views of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the wonderful lighthouse. However, a large residential facility was built along the shoreline in this direction that completely ruins the rural vista. Following two days of painting for the Olana Plein Air Event, (home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Church), this is the painting I selected to put into the auction that marked the culmination of the event. Actually, I laid out all the paintings I’d done during that period, and my husband chose this one! The painting sold at the auction.

Thirty wonderful artists were juried into the event. With tough competition, I felt very fortunate indeed to have been selected to participate. Even though I live so close and get to paint at Olana frequently, it’s always a magical experience.

Below is an image of the painting that you can click on for a larger view. It’s hard to show these panorama-format paintings in the space allocated for a blog image!

I set the painting into a gold plein air style frame and it looked completely washed out. So instead, I opted for this dark, coppery-wood frame with gold trim.

I’ll be posting the rest of the Olana paintings I did in the days to come. I have some from a month or two ago to post also, so you can expect a lot of Olana pieces to materialize in these posts as I try to catch up with myself!

This painting was done as a commission, based on a larger painting I’d done previously. The client needed to be able to travel with this painting that he ordered as a gift, so the smaller size was a necessity. If you see something on my site that you love, but want an original in a larger or smaller size, I can do that for you! Painting it in acrylic made a shorter time frame possible too.

This huge bobcat came to visit us several times during the winter! I set up my telephoto lens so that I’d be ready for him, and managed to capture a few good shots for photo references. It was a brutal winter for wildlife — so cold that our creek froze over a couple of times, which hardly ever happens. Apparently the bobcat found it easier to walk along the ice than through the deep snow. I saw him a few times cruising the brook like this, perhaps in search of ducks or geese, or whatever else he could find in that brutal weather.

This little Hooded Merganser was hanging around on the brook from time to time this winter. I watched and photographed him from the kitchen window, along with a visiting bobcat, and hoped the little guy wouldn’t become “dinner”. It was a terrible winter to be a duck in the northeast. Even our brook froze over for days at a time, which almost never happens. I’m hoping spring is finally on the way. I can’t wait to get out for some plein air painting again!

This little cottage overlooking the fields at Olana was the home of Hudson River School artist, Frederic Church. He lived here before he built the giant mansion up on top of the hillside. It is surrounded by a different kind of beauty and charm than his castle in the sky overlooking the Hudson River.

This is one of my favorite fall vistas. Winter gives me an opportunity to paint some scenes I wish I’d had time to do out on location, while conditions were still peak. I do hope to get back to this spot for a nice, large plein air piece, but at least I was able to capture from a photo in the meantime! The fall colors come and go so quickly; there’s never time to paint everything I want to then, before the leaves fall and the landscape loses its color.
