I was so disappointed when I heard we were going to have a rainy day today. I was looking forward to getting out and painting a commission that needs to be done on location. So I decided to turn the lemons into lemonade and continue with my “Flowers on Stonehenge paper” series that I’m enjoying so much. I picked the flowers late afternoon yesterday and arranged them in the vase so that I could start painting first thing today. I’ll have to look these all up in my wildflowers book to find out what they are. I’m pretty sure the little purple ones are asters, but I don’t know about the others. The tiny yellow ones on the left are so charming! I’d like to do another painting of those in a teeny tiny vase, so they can get the attention they deserve!

This was a much larger bouquet of flowers, so I went up to 16×12 in size. It just didn’t seem possible to do it smaller than that and still have space to let those long yellow flowers extend the way they love to do. It’s what gives them such character.

I love this vase. I bought it at a silent auction years ago, and it sat on a shelf ever since. I don’t know why it didn’t make it into the studio until now, but now that it’s here, I think it will become a permanent fixture!

My husband and I were in Woodstock, New York last weekend, and stopped at a flea market behind an old church. I found this charming Mexican vase there for a dollar! It seemed like the perfect thing for the wild daisies I picked.

I am loving how gouache performs on this Stonehenge paper. Previous colors of Stonehenge were all so light and washed out; this darker “Kraft” colored paper is just perfect!

I’ve done literally hundreds of drawings and paintings on kraft paper. In spite of the fact that it is not archival, the color is just too fabulous to pass up for some applications. So, when I heard that Stonehenge was coming out with a “Kraft” color in their gorgeous 100% rag, archival line of paper, I was thrilled. I started checking all the usual sources for it at least once a week. When I found it, it was only available in quantities of 25 full sheets. That was a good excuse to buy a lot of it!

I picked a huge bunch of wildflowers and set them out in six or seven vases. This little 5×7 is my first go on the new paper, and I think I’m in love!

This little red pot is one of my favorite vases. It was made by Marilyn Price, my favorite potter. Her pottery is available at RiverWinds Gallery in Beacon. She makes her own glazes, and has the most beautiful shapes to her pots! It’s hard for me to go into the gallery and not buy a new pot of hers.

Every so often, especially in winter, I get tired of working in my studio. I have a little 5×7″ Guerrilla Painter pochade box that I keep stocked with an assortment of artist grade water mixable oil paints for these occasions. I can use them anywhere in the house, in a cafe, or for painting in my enclosed car, without having to use solvents. They perform quite well, and I love that they give me these opportunities to break away from the studio when I need to do so.

Tonight was one of those times. I set up a little still life on the kitchen counter, broke out my little “stealth painting box,” and had a wonderful evening! I adore this little box. It holds a couple of wet paintings and my paints. There is a little black shoulder bag available that just fits the box and has a couple of pockets for a few additional supplies. I can grab it and go at a moment’s notice, and be able to paint anywhere!

Here’s an image of my setup below. You can click on it to get a larger, clearer view:

My palette for this painting was:
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Permanent Rose
Ultramarine Blue
Transparent Red Oxide
Titanium White

I had a great time preparing surfaces with cut up old maps. I glued the map pieces to archival, acid free foam board with Lineco acid-free bookbinding adhesive, rolled it with a brayer, and weighted it down to set. Then I applied a couple of coats of Golden Matte Medium, mainly because I love the working properties of the surface once the matte medium is applied, and it will also help to seal and protect the maps.

I painted this New York City map with roses for Valentine’s Day. What could be better than Love in the Big Apple? If you’d like to commission a similar painting of any size with your own city and choice of flowers, please contact me at JamieWG@aol.com for details.

This painting can be popped right into a standard 5×7″ frame.

Every once in awhile, I forget to post a painting. Sometimes I don’t realize until years later, when somebody requests a painting of a certain subject. In this case, I was asked if I had a painting of yellow roses. In searching through all my yellow rose paintings (and believe me, I had no idea I’d done so many!), I came across this one, which never got posted to my blog. This ended up being the chosen painting. I’m sorry about the glare in the photo. (It’s a good thing I’m a painter and not a photographer!) This one’s off to a new home tomorrow, but there are more yellow rose paintings floating around the studio if anybody else is interested!

Remember, there’s still time left to get that special someone a beautifully framed 5×7″ painting at a Holiday Special price with free shipping! Many still available. Click here to see them and for details.

This vase belonged to my great aunt, who was one of the sweetest, kindest ladies I’ve ever known. She lived to be 106, and I’m sure would be thrilled to see her vase in this painting! I love this little vase with the colorful plums circling the ultramarine blue. The beautiful linen color and texture is visible, and the surface is a joy to paint on. Many artists pre-prime boards or canvas to this warm linen color, but there’s nothing like the real thing, using a clear primer.

Palette:
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Red Light
Ultramarine Blue
Titanium White

4×2″, Golden Acrylics on gallery wrapped canvas, miniature easel included
The quote above is inscribed around the stretcher bars on the back of the canvas. Quarter is in the image for size reference only.
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

I immediately thought of this quote when I set up to do this painting. The canvas is gallery wrapped, and the image is painted around the sides of the canvas, so that it can be viewed from all sides. The miniature easel will be shipped with the painting.

It is so difficult to get good photographs of miniatures. They always look much better in person. This one has a fairly dark background with some sheen, so it was impossible to get rid of all the glare from the lights when I took the photo. Here’s another image of it, with a Coke can for additional size reference:

For such a little painting, I used a tremendous palette! Colors:
Cadmium Yellow Primrose
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Orange
Cadmium Red Light
Pyrrole Red
Cadmium Red Medium
Alizarin Crimson hue
Cerulean Blue hue
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Oxide of Chromium
Jenkins Green
Titanium White
I had a few other colors out there as well, but the ones listed above were the ones I used.

I toned the mini canvas and the sides with a mix of Transparent Red Oxide and Ultramarine Blue Golden Fluid Acrylics. Those dry quickly, so with a little help from my hair dryer, I was then able to use Golden OPEN Acrylics to paint the rest over that toned canvas.

I started working on the basic placement of shapes, and then worked more and more toward contrasts and details. I use blu-tack to adhere the mini canvas to a larger piece of foam board. That way I can hold it securely in one hand when necessary, while painting with the other.
