    the-impressionists.jpg

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

One beautiful day the cloud formations were so gorgeous that I packed up my gear and headed up to North South Lake to do cloud studies. I taped up a sheet of beautiful Stonehenge Kraft-colored rag paper to serve as a mid-toned ground, and worked in gouache and watercolor as the clouds moved swiftly. This big dark cloud moved across the hillside and I tried to snatch it into my painting before the raindrops fell!

This is a series of five paintings. Four of the five are this size and have identical custom mats to fit in standard 5×7″ frames.

August at the Lake Miniature Painting

This miniature painting was done on location as a color study for the larger painting that I posted yesterday. I had done it on nice Canson board and was so pleased with the way it turned out that I varnished it and edged it in gold to set on this miniature easel. It’s a charmer!

Here is a view of the painting from the side, to better show the gold edging:

This plein air painting has been done on Saunders 300 lb rough watercolor paper, and varnished so that it can be framed like an oil painting. However, I am also including a custom, acid free mat and backing board, so you’ll be able to pop it right into a standard 12×16″ frame. This vista shows the reservoir on a hot summer day, where I enjoyed the breeze under the shade of the pine trees along the shore while painting.

Due to the beautiful gloss varnish on this painting, there are some whitish glare spots on the image that are not on the painting; that’s just the light reflecting off the varnish when I took the picture!

This painting was done from old and new photo references combined with verbal descriptions of how the house and property used to look over 75 years ago. It was an interesting journey back through time, and I loved the challenge of recreating this old homestead.

I was instantly drawn to the strong reds and greens in this scene, at a time when the greens are overtaking the landscape. The tree growing around the large boulder is a pretty common sight along the woodland streams in the mountains, and provided some interesting textural elements. It was a really hot day, so painting by water was a must!

There’s been so little rain here in the northeast that I’m trying to paint as many waterfalls as possible before they dry up completely. Every time I go out to paint, there is less water out there, and the falls on my property are already gone. Old Mills falls is one of those exquisite summer spots that can usually be counted on to provide some comfort on brutally hot days. It’s still running, though not at its usual clip. I always find the colors to be so striking here, with the green moss and warm-colored pool of water, and the light dancing on the waterfall.

Before doing this oil painting, I did four small watercolors of the scene out on location to study various options:
A vertical orientation with low horizon
Vertical with high horizon
Horizontal with low horizon, and
Horizontal with high horizon.

My plan was to pick the one I liked best, return to the “scene of the crime”, and do a large oil painting of that one. That large one is actually still in progress, but before I embarked on that one, I wanted to test drive a new support I planned to use. This is done on the new Arches Oil Paper. It is a 100%, 140 lb., archival rag paper. Artists have painted oils on prepared rag paper for many hundreds of years, and it is one of the most archival surfaces that exists for oil painting. The fibers in this case have been internally sized for oil painting. The painting can then be mounted to board, varnished, and framed without glass like any other oil painting, or matted and framed with glass and a backing board like other works on paper.

Since I love painting on paper, this support seemed a good match for me. I love the luminosity that becomes possible by using layered washes of mineral spirits, mediums, and oil paint, followed by opaque work like a traditional oil painting. It was great fun doing this one, and I’m happy with the huge potential of this surface for handling many different effects.

I love the variety of painting with all types of media on a large selection of supports. But there’s nothing like the glow of transparent pigments on white paper! This painting really captures the shimmering golden fields at Frederic Church’s Olana estate. I went there in the morning and the purple flowers I’d seen just a week or two before were completely gone, replaced by bright yellow flowers blooming profusely. I took a bunch of photos before it started to rain, then headed back to the studio, where I painted this from one of the photos.

This is a painting that I’m still working on, but it’s nearing the finish line. I spent two days working on it out on location, hiking 3/4 of a mile back into the woods with my painting gear. The light changed quickly. I think what I’ll have to do at this location in the future is to work on several paintings over a period of several days, so each time the light changes, I can switch to another painting done during that time frame. I’ll either finish this one up in the studio, or make another return trip to the falls.

It was great fun to paint this, using transparent layers, pulling out lights and adding darks, then building to opaque sections. I love painting this size and larger. It’s mainly transporting all that gear, plus the limited time factors, that keep me painting smaller on site most of the time. I’ve resolved most of the setup issue by using light tripod easels and clamping a light palette to the easel itself, rather than carting my Soltek easel (which weighs a ton but handles large panels with ease) or one of the popular box/tripod solutions. Although the box/tripod setups are touted as being “light”, they aren’t light for me! I guess “light” is a relative term.

I’ll be reposting this once it’s finished. With all the rain expected over the next week, it might be sooner rather than later if I have studio time to fill!

Water Music

Yep, another waterfall! Spring is the best time of year to paint waterfalls. It’s not long before they either dry up during the summer, or are far less dramatic as the flow diminishes. This one was also painted out on location. It’s watercolor on 1/8 sheet of Stonehenge Fawn paper. It’s a 100% cotton rag printmaking paper — very high quality, not too much tooth, and I love painting watercolor and gouache on it.

This is one of my favorite sizes to paint. It works so well for both vertical and horizontal compositions, and allows me to tear down a page with no waste. What I end up with is not a standard frame size, so to make it easier for buyers, the price includes a custom, ivory-colored archival mat, acid free backing board, and will arrive sealed in a polybag for protection and gift-giving. You’ll be able to just buy an inexpensive, standard frame into which you can pop the already-prepared painting, or take it to your local framer and you won’t have to purchase a mat and backing board.

I’ve had custom, archival mats and backing boards made for all the sizes I generally paint when working on paper. This painting can be purchased at auction tomorrow at 4:30 at Garrison Art Center. The painting looks far better than this photo, which was taken with my cellphone camera. The blues are not so intense and of course the painting is in focus!

I hiked up to the peak of Little Stoney Point in Cold Spring-on-Hudson this morning to do this 12×16″ oil painting for the Garrison Art Center’s famous event, Artists on Location. The painting will be auctioned tomorrow afternoon at the Art Center along with works by 75 other artists. I’m sorry about the awful photo, taken with my cellphone camera in dim room lighting after I framed and delivered the painting. I didn’t bring a better camera because I didn’t want to lug one to the top of the cliffs! But all the paintings for the event will be there for you to see in person.

The painting depicts the northern entrance to the Hudson Higlands section of the Hudson River, between Breakneck Ridge on the right, and Storm King Mountain on the left. The island on the right side is Bannerman Island, famous for the castle ruins located there and its history. The Highlands is to me the most dramatic section of the River. I was standing at the end of Little Stony Point, and the Hudson sweeps around and past as it makes its way down toward West Point. I could spend a month painting at this location and not get tired of it!

As I was finishing up the painting, a big wind gust came along and took down my entire easel. The easel broke and my paint, brushes and turp went everywhere! Fortunately, having feared the worst as the gusts got stronger, I had already removed the painting from the easel. After that, I forgot to even photograph the painting on site. It wasn’t until I had already delivered the painting that I realized I hadn’t taken a picture, so I dashed back in with my cellphone camera. What a day! But hey, any day painting is better than a day not painting!

Here’s an image of the framed painting, though I’m sorry to say that it’s not any better an image, also taken with my cellphone.

This little stream runs through our property, cascading over rocks and waterfalls. It gives me endless enjoyment to paint there on a beautiful day. I wanted to explore some compositional ideas, each of which brings out different elements in the landscape, so I did a series of small watercolors, setting the horizon at different points, with vertical and horizontal orientations. Usually I do a large painting on site when the cherry blossoms are blooming along the Hudson River overlook at Boscobel. This year I didn’t plan well enough and ended up short on time to catch the blooms before the rain was predicted to take them all down! I dashed over there and set myself down along the path with my little 5×7 Guerrilla box, so I could at least get in a small one before they vanished. I wish the season were longer. I can never get enough of these amazing trees while they’re in bloom.

I went to Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, NY this morning to paint with a group of artist friends. I was thinking that I’d do a bunch of watercolor sketches, and then go back later in the week to do an oil painting. Just in case I changed my mind, I brought my little 5×7″ Guerrilla box along. I’m so glad I did, because when I saw this scene with the pond and huge masses of blooming daffodils, I had to paint it in oils!

It wasn’t long before the clouds moved in, the wind picked up, and raindrops started to fall. I had just finished up when that happened, so it’s a good thing I worked small. I’m grateful for being able to get outside to paint on a beautiful spring morning.

I was the first artist to arrive there today, and Boscobel is closed to the general public on Tuesdays. The Executive Director, David Krol, came out to greet me, and asked me if I’d like a tour of the newly renovated and stocked gift shop. It has been transformed into a beautiful, airy space with some really fun items, including high end picnic wares, beautiful pads of printed place mats (and really fun ones for kids!), books about the Hudson River and Hudson Valley, packages of potted herbs and lots more. Be sure you stop in there if you go to visit. The Hudson River overlook is always stunning, and Constitution Marsh is about to turn that beautiful reddish-gold color that it does for a couple of weeks in spring and fall. The cherry trees were heavily budded, and I expect they’ll be bursting with blooms any day now. In the meantime, you can check out the beautiful display of daffodils by the pond. Bonus: David told me that the Cold Spring Farmer’s Market will now be there on Saturdays, and grounds passes will be free during that time! So go stock up, and check out the famous view and the gift shop. You can do a house tour too. (The decor is to die for.)

In Memory of Ted Beardsley

Posted by Jamie on April 10th, 2012

On Easter Sunday, New York Plein Air Painters (NYPAP) lost its founder and leader, Ted Beardsley. Ted was one of those rare individuals who always put the interests of others ahead of his own. He never let on about his own multitude of accomplishments, and instead put those talents to use painting and helping promote the artists of New York’s plein air community.

Ted recognized early on that a state the size of New York would have to break into smaller chapters in order to be able to serve the artists and grow. In doing so, Ted touched our lives in a very personal and direct way. He always made time for anybody who called. He directed without being pushy. He believed in an organization that would serve not only professionals, but anybody who wanted to enjoy the thrill of painting out on location, without regard to skill level. This made NYPAP an open and welcoming community.

On a personal note, I will miss Ted terribly. He left very big shoes to fill. His generosity and many selfless acts will stay with me forever. I can’t even count how many artists have become my personal friends over the years because of him. Our Lower Hudson Valley chapter is over 160 artists and growing. Every once in awhile, an experiment takes place that makes me so happy I want to sing and dance. That’s what happened here. In preparation for a life drawing session, I decided to experiment last night with some of the Golden Interference Acrylics. I’ve been using them quite a bit for my surface preparation on dark supports, but I hadn’t actually tried painting with them. I am so happy with the way this turned out. The figures almost seem to move as the light dances across the shimmery, metallic paint.

I was initially sorry I didn’t have any sketchbook pages prepared with the Golden Black Gesso. However, given the way this turned out, that was actually a good thing. I had a 12×16″ spiral pad of black Mi Tientes paper. I’d even previously sized a page of it with Matte Medium, which I cut out of the pad (hence the reason why this montage is 12×15.5″ instead of 12×16″) It was ideal for this purpose.

I worked from some photo references. That sure did make it easier in terms of selecting poses that would work in the piece. Since I always do these in open studio with a model, I am used to taking whatever pose the model gives the group, and trying to make that work within the composition. I can certainly see the benefit to doing some of these from photos for that reason, though I do prefer doing them from life.

What I was trying to find out was whether or not I’d like painting with the interference paints on a dark ground. I have to say, I like it lots! I will definitely be doing some of these on my 16×20 boards too, now that I see the results on paper.

Below is an image that you can click on to see a larger view of the painting. I might try to make a video of it later, so that you can see how it shimmers in the changing light.

This was painted a week or so ago out on location, sitting with my feet in the water on a gorgeous, unseasonably warm, early spring afternoon. My little dog Rondo waded in the water while I painted. It’s hard to know which of us enjoyed it more!

These montages are such an interesting challenge. You never know in advance what pose will come up next, so getting them to fit together compositionally is sometimes like attempting to make a jigsaw puzzle out of mismatched pieces! I like the way these poses came together though, and when she decided to do the last pose lying down, it gave me that nice horizontal element across the bottom.

This surface is a black archival drawing board. I coated it front and back with matte medium to protect and seal it, as well as provide additional tooth. The matte medium keeps the paint workable a bit longer also, since the water doesn’t absorb into the surface. After sealing the board, I put a stencil rid over it, and sprayed it with diluted interference and iridescent acrylics to give it some visual texture, depth and shimmer. Then I painted the figures in acrylics over the top. It will be clear-sealed again, this time with gloss medium, and varnished. That way, it can be framed just like an oil painting, without glass.

This was painted last week on an exquisite spring day, with the Piliated Woodpeckers dancing around in the trees, flashing their red crests and bright white markings. This vista faces Kaaterskill High Peak way in the distance, which is one of the major Catskill landmarks. The red maples were just starting to bud. I’ll bet by the time I get back there in a few days, the scene will already look totally different.

I went hiking with my friend Gretchen to this spectacular waterfall. The light was perfect and conditions ideal, with record-breaking March temperatures and no bugs! I found a spot to set up my easel that was high up, next to the falls. Generally I view it from below, so it was great to find this additional vantage point.

Here’s a photo of my painting in progress at the scene. You can click the image to enlarge it if you’d like.

It’s been so warm this winter that I’m getting concerned about the potential for drought. That could mean a severe waterfall shortage for my paintings too! I’m trying to get in as much water painting as possible before all the streams and creeks coming down from the mountainside run dry. Hopefully we’ll get abundant rain in April and that won’t happen, but just in case, at least I’ll have gotten in a few of them early on this season.

My friend Jani came over a couple of days ago to paint. In spite of a decent weather forecast, it looked like we were going to get rained out! So, I opted for a small painting close to home. We walked back behind my house to where the beaver dam used to be, and I set up to paint on a small island in the stream. Here’s what the scene looked like when I began, so you can understand why we thought rain was on the way!

I did my block-in while it was still pretty overcast, but slowly that gave way to clearing skies.

120326-Overcast-Morning-by-the-Beaver-Pond-5x7-scene-blockin-800

Light started to pour into the scene as the sun rose above the tree line and the clouds started breaking up. It’s hard not to chase the light in a painting when this happens. The photo below was taken when it was almost finished. (You can click to enlarge the image.)

I tend to get so involved in painting that I forget to take some photos as I go. Two days last week, I was so excited to go out painting that I even forgot to bring along my cellphone and camera! Everybody always comments that they really enjoy seeing the scene along with the painting, so I am going to try to remember to do this more often this year! I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the progress shots and location photos.

Figure Montage — Acrylic on Board

This figure montage was done in open studio life drawing from poses that ranged from 30 seconds to 20 minutes. I prepared a 16×20″ black and iridescent support in advance, then layered the poses on top of that background. I did blue and purple figures on the shortest poses that began the session, since those colors tend to recede. I layered warmer colors over cooler colors, and let the poses overlap and interweave. Great fun!

This painting was done as an acrylic on board so that it can be framed without glass like an oil painting. The archival board was sealed on both sides before painting. It will be signed and then receive two isolation coats, followed by a coat of beautiful gloss varnish. It will fit any standard 16×20″ frame.

This is a watercolor painting from open studio life drawing last week. We had a fabulous new model. Most of the session I painted in my sketchbook, but I pulled out some nice paper for this pose.

You can also see a montage of the very quick gesture poses in my sketchbook at this link. I really like the way this experiment came out, so I’ve prepared some black supports to upgrade my materials and do more this week. Stay tuned!

This inquisitive giraffe was painted from one of the photos I took this past week at the Bronx Zoo. (You can see my sketches of the giraffes done at the zoo at this link.) I’ve really fallen in love with their beautifully expressive faces and graceful movements. Maybe I’ll do a few larger paintings of them too. They sure do seem to fit this tall format!

Mount Desert Island, Maine has always been one of my favorite places to visit. Acadia National park has some of the most stunning vistas in the United States, and for years we made it our annual vacation destination. We actually thought about buying a place up there, but in the end decided that the season is too short, and the location too far away, for us to get up there on a regular basis.

I haven’t been up there for a few years, but every once in awhile, when I’m feeling some Maine nostalgia coming on, I pull out my photos from there and paint something. There’s never a shortage of atmosphere along the Maine coastline!

My husband and I took a couple of days to drive around the Schoodic Peninsula on a photo expedition. I did this painting from one of those photos while test driving some of my new color choices.

I was driving by Hunter Mountain a couple of weeks ago on a little side road. The only snow visible was the snow up on the ski slopes! This has been such a mild winter that it reminded me of the way the landscape looks for spring skiing. I loved this scene and composition. I snapped a photo of it from the car and painted it at home from the photo.

This was painted yesterday at Norrie Point in Staatsburg, New York. I went prepared with a wide panel because I remembered the huge expanse of the river at this location! I realized I hadn’t painted this long format for a long time, though it happens to be one of my favorite sizes. This is a color combination I use a lot in my watercolor work, so I wanted to see how it would transition to acrylic painting. I’m liking the transparency and warmth a lot!

I’ve used this color combination in acrylics and watercolor, but I think this is my first go at it in oils. It’s interesting how the mood of the painting is affected by the bright crimson underpainting. Even though almost all of that color is covered over by other paint colors, the air still breathes the warmth of the strong pinky-violet undertones.

Hudson River School artist Frederic Church’s Olana estate remains one of my favorite vistas along the river. I never get tired of painting from there. It seems that when I do tire of a certain view there, a dozen more magical scenes from the property seem to appear!

A number of viewers have written to me recently, commenting on the fact that I haven’t posted any paintings for awhile, and wondering if I fell off the face of the earth! Actually, I’ve been painting up a storm. Winter brings changes with it, and I do lots of experiments with assorted media, commissioned paintings, and charge through countless pages in my sketchbook, using ink and watercolors, visiting places like the Bronx Zoo, Maritime Aquarium, pet stores, Adams Fairacre Farms in Wappingers — any warm indoor location that will have me, with something interesting to draw or paint! I post new work almost daily to my Hudson Valley Sketches site (click here) this time of year. Please do check it out and say hi over there!

This was painted on location at Boscobel Restoration, on a fall day that was heavily overcast and chilly, following a night of rain. By early afternoon, the sky had brightened and skies were clearing. The heavy cloud cover continued to lift and reveal wispy clouds and unseasonably warm temperatures. Of course I couldn’t keep chasing the light all day, so I tried to freeze the moment when the sun was breaking through the clouds and casting yellow streaks on the Hudson River off in the distance.

It’s hard to convey texture in a digital image, but here’s a closeup of a section of the painting:

101012-Clearing-Skies-Over-Boscobel-detail-450

What I really enjoy about the texture in the painting is that it is not visible from afar. It’s only when you get close to the painting that you suddenly see a whole new landscape of texture on the surface!

Rockwood is such a beautiful place to paint in fall. I don’t get down here often, so I try to make the most of it when I can! Often the boats that go by are too far out to show a reflection, or the water is too rough to see it. But this one cast a shimmering image on the water. I was telling some visitors to the park that I’d been waiting for a sailboat to go by so I could pop it into the painting. We all looked up and there it was!

This painting is a miniature version of the one I posted yesterday. Watercolorist David Taylor got me into doing these tiny watercolor sketches as quick-captures of a scene, or to warm up before embarking on a larger version. They give the artist a chance to test drive some ideas and different compositions, without taking up a huge amount of time. If something’s not going to work, better to find out with less time invested! It also lets us explore ways of making improvements and testing color combinations. I’ve become quite hooked on these! They look charming matted and framed, and hung on a wall or set on a little table easel.

I’ve really been enjoying observing and painting these brightly colored, backlit fall scenes. Capturing the brilliance of the color this time of year is an annual fall challenge that I always look forward to, made all the sweeter by the fact that it precedes the period of winter hibernation.

This old, convoluted maple tree has been the subject of many of my sketches and paintings this year. I’ve been watching it for years, thinking about how much I wanted to paint it someday, as I’d walk the dog past it. Finally that temptation became a reality this year, and I did it from many angles in pencil, Cretacolor leads, watercolor, and now gouache. Next year, oils and acrylics!

I’ve been posting ink lightfastness tests to my other blog, Hudson Valley Sketches. If you’re interested in seeing those results, here’s a direct link to yesterday’s post.

The red in the distance in the image above isn’t as strong in the painting as it’s showing on my monitor, but when I adjust that, the foreground goes green! So, you’ll just have to imagine that distance as being much softer in the actual painting.

My husband and I took the “Skyride” (chair lift) up to the top of Hunter Mountain, then spent a few hours hiking at the top and taking photos. Since we were able to ride up there, I brought along some painting supplies. However, I was having way too much fun chatting and walking, having a picnic, and snapping photo references to pull out the paints. This was done from one of my photos instead. My husband is just now downloading his photos taken that day with his Nikon. I’ve been peeking over his shoulder and there are definitely some there I want to paint also!

I had to wait around the house yesterday for my oil burner to be serviced. Since I didn’t know what time they’d be coming, my friend Jani said she’d come over and paint outside with me for the day. It turned out that the repair guy showed up at 8:30am and was done within a couple of hours, but we were content to stay and paint by the house anyway. Both of these are subjects that I have painted before in one form or another. I’ll discuss that more once I’ve had a chance to do some touch-ups and photograph them individually. This is a photo I snapped with my cellphone camera after coming inside at the end of the day. The paintings seemed to make a nice colorful, autumnal grouping.

I set out on a beautiful sunny day with my easel. When I came to this gorgeous spot, I set up in the middle of the road to paint.

As soon as I had my easel out and started to lay in color, the clouds thickened, shadows vanished, and colors changed!

I decided to stay with the moody, atmospheric day it had become. Most of this painting was done on location. I had plans to paint with a friend at Olana that afternoon, so I had to pack up before I was quite finished, and added the finishing touches in the studio today.

I painted this on location at Hudson River School painter Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, in Hudson, New York. It is one of the best sunset spots, and many visitors come late in the day just to see the sun setting over the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. On the evenings when the sky doesn’t light up with bright colors, the beauty of the late day light effects still makes it worth the trip up the hillside.

This painting was done from photos that I took on a recent hike with my husband up to Sunset Rock. The most famous view from there is overlooking North South Lake, with Kaaterskill High Peak and Roundtop in the distance. It was a popular painting location even back in the days of the Hudson River School painters. I decided to look for some alternate vistas up there, and it wasn’t too hard to find some that appealed to me — like this one! You can not only see west to the lakes and Catskill Mountains from this vantage point, but also southeast to the Hudson River Valley below.

My regular viewers here have seen this waterfall painted from many different angles and seasons, in many mediums, and various sizes and formats. Now you can see the tonal sketch version! I am really enjoying working this way, with a light and a dark on toned paper. I sat on a gardening cushion on a rock at the water line to do this sketch, with my little dog Rondo wading in the pools of the waterfalls.

This is the same old maple tree that I did the other day in a monochrome rendering, but from the other side, and in a different medium. This tree presents the most interesting study from any angle. You can also see a pencil sketch that I did of it from a third vantage point. I’m still not tired of studying this tree!

I love this vantage point down by the barns at Olana, with the eastern view. I’ve done three oil paintings from here, but always wanted to do a longer format. So, here it is in watercolor! I did a miniature version too, which I’ll post tomorrow or Friday. My husband was taking a photography workshop here, so I got to hang out and paint!

This was a drawing I did from the studio window on a rainy day. I’ve been wanting to sketch or paint this view for a long time and finally got my chance! I was looking at sketches last week by Hudson River School artist BBG Stone, and became captivated by the way he would zero in on his focal point in a certain area of his drawing, leaving the rest in a more unfinished state. I liked the way it created a vignette within the scene, and I’m looking forward to exploring this style in my drawings and sketches.

Usually I use this approach of a dark and a light on midtone paper in the figure studio, but BBG Stone employed it very successfully in many of his landscape sketches, so I had to give it a go too. I loved working this way! More like this will definitely follow in the near future!

I did a series of small watercolor paintings from Olana over the past week. The home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church is a place near and dear to my heart. I’ve been wanting to paint this hillside view toward Mount Merino for a long time! It was done from one of the carriage roads on the property. I was drawn to the way the near hillside is illuminated in the sunlight, framed by Mount Merino behind it.

This painting has been double matted so that you can pop it into any standard 5×7″ frame.

Deep in the woods is a stunning waterfall with clear water, rusty colors, and striking rock outcroppings, set in a hemlock grove. I often hike there with my husband, but this was my first time going with paints and an easel. I also used the opportunity to test drive a new easel setup, which I loved. More on that coming soon!

Here is my easel and painting at the scene when I was almost finished. You can see that by then the sun had shifted quite a bit. Much is in shadow in the photo that was very visible to the human eye:

Hurricane Irene Photos from Palenville

Posted by Jamie on September 3rd, 2011

My husband has been on vacation this month, hence the reasons why you haven’t seen many paintings here. If you’ve been following my sketches on my other blog, you have seen a few of the places we’ve hiked to, and what I sketched while hanging out on the patio with my Sweetheart. This past week we’ve had Hurricane Irene to deal with, and that sure packed a whallop around here. We are fortunate that our property survived quite well and we had no flooding in the house. We also managed to retain power almost the entire time. Here are some of my personal photos that show just a tiny portion of what happened around me.

Here’s a photo along Kaaterskill Creek in Palenville, by the Woodstock Avenue bridge, which gives an indication of the general road conditions following Irene. The creek makes a sharp turn here, and the power of the water against the bank collapsed an entire section of the roadway. A woman’s house along the creek washed away during the storm.

Irene-Road-Damage-720

Our back yard started to fill up quickly when the storm hit:

Irene-Back-Property-flooded-720

We were fortunate that the house and septic were on high enough ground, and with good enough drainage around the house, to not be affected. Things have pretty much returned to normal for us here at home. To show how much water there was, here’s a photo of one of our streams now, with a “moderate-to-heavy” amount of water flowing:

Irene-Stream-Normal-600v

Here’s the same stream just after the hurricane. The water had actually subsided a bit by the time I got out there to take this photo:

Irene-Stream-720

One of our small waterfalls is also a dramatic tale of what the storm brought. Here’s a photo from before the storm. You can see that the water flows only to the left side of those rock ledges:

Irene-waterfall-normal-flow-720

Well, here it is just after the storm! There’s so much water here that you can’t even see the ledges at all! The stream couldn’t contain all the water, which is why it jumped the banks in the back of our property and flooded the yard.

Irene-waterfall-720

I’m so thankful that we fared better than most of the folks up here in the Catskills. So many have lost everything. It’s a real tragedy. With the sun shining and the dog playing in the pools by the waterfalls again, it’s almost hard to believe that so many are left with no homes and nowhere to go.

Usually when I’m at Olana, I’m painting the famous vista of the Hudson River. The day after a big rainfall, my friend Gretchen and I decided to venture to Pomeroy Falls to experience the waterfall at its most dramatic. It did not disappoint! We had a really moody day on Plum Point last week, with the sun peeking in and out of clouds and an occasional threatening-looking cloud passing overhead. It seems to me that whenever our painting group goes to the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, most of the artists prefer to paint the high view from up behind the mansion, or to spend the day painting in the beautiful Italian Gardens there. (You can check out my gouache sketch from up behind the mansion here.) But I’m always drawn to the Bard Rock section of the property down along the shoreline of the Hudson River. There are dramatic rock outcroppings there and beautiful trees along the river’s edge. Sometimes the color of the water is just too beautiful to believe. This was one of those magical days when the warm and cool colors mingled. I found a shady spot to paint that was surrounded by strong contrasts. I hadn’t been here for a long time, and I don’t think I ever painted from this exact spot before. The tide went out quickly, revealing more and more of the rocks that were nearly all underwater when I first arrived. It was another dreamy day painting along the Hudson.

Painting at the Vanderbilt Mansion

Posted by Jamie on June 27th, 2011

See the finished painting here.

I had a wonderful time painting with friends at the Vanderbilt Mansion with friends. This large, old estate sits along the Hudson River in Hyde Park, and is now owned by the New York State Park System. Most of our group painted up by the mansion and in the gardens, but when I come here, I love to paint down by the river. There’s always lots of shade, a cool breeze, and interesting rocks and trees to paint along the shoreline.

The water nearly covered those rocks when I started the painting. You can see how much the tide went out since then!

The painting is too wet to get a decent photo of it now. I tried, but there was glare everywhere. I’ll have to wait for it to dry a bit before I can get a photo to post. In the meantime, you can enjoy a view of my office for the day!

Opposite the Thomas Cole house in Catskill, New York, there is a row of beautiful Victorian homes. My friend Karen and I set up to paint up on the hillside, in the cool shade on the grounds of the Thomas Cole Historic Site. Today I went to Rondout Landing in Kingston, behind the Hudson River Maritime Museum. I planned to paint the replica of Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, but it was docked in a terrible location that didn’t allow for a good view of the whole ship, or even a decent view of just the front. There was plenty to paint at that site though! I walked a little ways down the landing and found this view that I really liked.

When I finished my oil painting, I found a place where I could sketch a portion of the boat. Here is my sketch of the stern section. I’ll have to paint the Half Moon at one of its other stops as it makes its way down the Hudson. Hopefully I will find a better vantage point somewhere else.

I was so disappointed when I heard we were going to have a rainy day today. I was looking forward to getting out and painting a commission that needs to be done on location. So I decided to turn the lemons into lemonade and continue with my “Flowers on Stonehenge paper” series that I’m enjoying so much. I picked the flowers late afternoon yesterday and arranged them in the vase so that I could start painting first thing today. I’ll have to look these all up in my wildflowers book to find out what they are. I’m pretty sure the little purple ones are asters, but I don’t know about the others. The tiny yellow ones on the left are so charming! I’d like to do another painting of those in a teeny tiny vase, so they can get the attention they deserve!

This was a much larger bouquet of flowers, so I went up to 16×12 in size. It just didn’t seem possible to do it smaller than that and still have space to let those long yellow flowers extend the way they love to do. It’s what gives them such character.

I love this vase. I bought it at a silent auction years ago, and it sat on a shelf ever since. I don’t know why it didn’t make it into the studio until now, but now that it’s here, I think it will become a permanent fixture!

My husband and I were in Woodstock, New York last weekend, and stopped at a flea market behind an old church. I found this charming Mexican vase there for a dollar! It seemed like the perfect thing for the wild daisies I picked.

I am loving how gouache performs on this Stonehenge paper. Previous colors of Stonehenge were all so light and washed out; this darker “Kraft” colored paper is just perfect!

I’ve done literally hundreds of drawings and paintings on kraft paper. In spite of the fact that it is not archival, the color is just too fabulous to pass up for some applications. So, when I heard that Stonehenge was coming out with a “Kraft” color in their gorgeous 100% rag, archival line of paper, I was thrilled. I started checking all the usual sources for it at least once a week. When I found it, it was only available in quantities of 25 full sheets. That was a good excuse to buy a lot of it!

I picked a huge bunch of wildflowers and set them out in six or seven vases. This little 5×7 is my first go on the new paper, and I think I’m in love!

This little red pot is one of my favorite vases. It was made by Marilyn Price, my favorite potter. Her pottery is available at RiverWinds Gallery in Beacon. She makes her own glazes, and has the most beautiful shapes to her pots! It’s hard for me to go into the gallery and not buy a new pot of hers.

It was so hot out today that my friend Mara and I were trying to decide whether to stay in the studio and paint the wildflowers I picked this morning, or venture out into the yard in the heat. We went exploring, finding shade and irresistible views at the base of the little waterfall. It was surprisingly cool there with my feet in the cold water while I painted! I was attracted to the strong contrasts of the shadow side of the rock and white of the bubbling water catching the light, combined with the transparency of the cool pool below where the light penetrated the surface.

Anybody who’s ever driven across the Rip Van Winkle bridge over the Hudson River has been treated to this fabulous Catskill skyline vista. It’s even more dramatic at sunset, with the colors springing up from behind the distant mountains. I’ve been going there recently to take photos. I like the way the islands in the river enhance the composition at this location.

I was painting up in Amenia, New York today. This distant view looked like a winding river of grass through the hills! There were a lot of clouds in the sky, which were forever changing the lights and darks in the landscape. I liked it best when the light illuminated the “river”, and tried to capture those moments in the painting.

I’ve been wanting to paint this waterfall for such a long time! Over half of it is this beautiful rock ledge covered with the most gorgeous green moss I’ve ever seen. I finally had my opportunity when the sun broke out briefly on Saturday. I did end up having to pack up quickly in the rain and finish it up in the studio, but it was a thrill to be out there painting for awhile. As far as I know, this waterfall has no name, so I call it Mossy Falls. I’d guess it to be about 25-30 feet high.

This painting was started on location in the apple orchard at Lasdon Arboretum in Somers, New York. I was about a half hour away from completion when thick clouds moved in and it started to rain! I had to pack up quickly and return home. Fortunately, I got a photo while the light was still good, and finished it from the photograph.

Every spring I go to paint the Cherry Blossom trees at Boscobel Restoration, high above Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River across from West Point. This spring I was sure I’d missed the boat in terms of the cherry blossoms, so I was thrilled to see a few trees still in full bloom when I arrived there yesterday morning. The marsh still has its nice spring color — orangy red in the morning, turning to dark violet by late afternoon as the sun marches across the sky. In a few weeks, that will all give way to the greens of summer, and all of the extraordinary color will be gone.

This was painted at Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, New York. To my dismay, most of the cherry blossoms had come down in the strong winds during the week. I found this one tree that still had blooms on it, and pulled out my artistic license to add a few more.

From this vantage point at Boscobel, Constitution Marsh stretches out below, and the West Point Military Academy is on the hillside across the Hudson River. You can barely make out the buildings of West Point on the hillside in the painting.

The beavers have been very industrious lately and built a second pond below this one. They backed the water up to this first dam and extended the height. It’s now probably about four feet, including what’s below the water in the foreground.

Nick made friends with a Canadian Goose that came to greet us, and put him into his painting. I was more interested in the splash of red color offered by Nick’s shirt, so I painted Nick painting the pond.

I had five artist friends over to paint a few days ago and everybody chose to paint waterfalls! Sometimes it’s hard for me to paint when I’m the hostess, but I did manage to get this little one nearly finished, and just tweaked it a bit in the studio. Today it rained really hard all day. I just walked my dog past this waterfall and it’s now extended all the way across those ledges. I just might have to go paint it again!

Yesterday I was sketching in Hudson, New York with a couple of artist friends. What a great place to draw and paint! If you’d like to see those sketches, just click here.

Here’s another of my tiny “Micro Master” paintings, this one after a Monet favorite. Figures are especially difficult in this diminutive size, but I love the challenge! The quarter in the photo is for size reference, so you can see how small these really are.

These miniatures are so difficult and time consuming that I only do them on a commission basis. It’s a labor of love! If you either have a favorite painting by a Master in mind or would like me to choose one for you as a commission, you can email me at JamieWG@aol.com.

The image above is probably showing this painting at larger than real life on your screen! This is postage stamp size. The painting itself is about 1.25×1.75″. The quarter is there for size reference. I love Tolouse-Lautrec, and it so much fun to do these Micro Master miniature versions! I had to do some editing and use my own artistic license for this teeny tiny size. For instance, I’d never have been able to do the lettering that was on the painting in this itty bitty format!

These tiny master renditions are generally done only on a commission basis, so if you’ve got one in mind that you’d like to order, just drop me an email at JamieWG@aol.com.

Yesterday, landscape painter David Dunlop did a one-day demo on painting water. He did a lecture in the morning, followed by several demonstrations in watercolor, acrylics and oils. Participants had the option of just listening and taking notes, or they were free to paint along. I had brought my little 5×7″ Guerrilla pochade box with me, so that proved the perfect thing for painting along while David did the acrylic and oil demos. These were all really fast — not more than 20-30 minutes each. It was great fun to follow along this way and try to emulate his brushwork. He did this one in acrylics, but I painted it in oils. (Didn’t bring my acrylics with me.)

You can stand in this spot, turn in any direction, and see a scene worthy of a painting! This is in the Platte Clove area of the Catskills, known for its steep and dangerous cliffs and dramatic waterfalls.

For some reason, the foreground rocks photographed much higher in blue and purple chroma than they are in the actual painting. I wasn’t able to dull that down without killing the luminosity in the sky.

It was foggy out this morning, and I’ve really been in the mood to experiment with fog and transparent pigments! This is a view of the brook that runs behind my house in the morning fog. It was painted with just:
Indian Yellow
Quinacridone Red
Ultramarine Blue
Transparent Red Oxide (which I probably could have done without).

There is no white paint. The feeling of luminosity was achieved by the light bouncing through the transparent pigments to the white-primed linen. The highlights in the rocks and lights within the foliage masses were achieved by pulling out paint with brushes or bits of paper towel. Paint was added and subtracted like this until I got the effects I wanted.

I’ve been working mostly with opaque paints for a very long time, and now I’m very excited about exploring the world of transparents! I was ready to break out my opaque pigments on this if needed, but I think I would have lost more than I’d have gained by adding opaque paint in this particular instance.

My husband and I were out for a walk with our cameras and ran into some friends down by the river at Madam Brett Park. This is one of my favorite painting locations in the Catskills. You can sit on the rocks for hours and hear nothing but rushing water. The water is crystal clear, and so transparent that the pool looks a lot shallower than it really is!

This painting was done with a lot of transparent pigments, a few semi-transparent, a couple of opaque pigments, and a little help from artist extraordinaire, David Dunlop. As plein air season gets underway, I’ll have to see if I can cart enough extra tubes with me to keep a transparent palette for at least part of the process. You can see how it really makes the painting glow from within.

The huge, bright full moon last night received a lot of publicity! Apparently this was the largest and brightest the moon will appear for the next 19 years. They said on the news that it was approximately 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual! We had a totally clear sky here last night, so my husband and I went across the field to the lakeshore to take pictures. I brought my little pochade box along and did this small oil painting. There was a gentle breeze over the lake, scattering the reflections as they ran across the surface.

If you haven’t already done so, be sure to check out my new site where I am posting my sketches! It’s called Hudson Valley Sketches (http://hudsonvalleysketches.blogspot.com). It felt so wonderful today to have sun and warm temperatures! I headed over to Beacon to test drive my new SunEden easel setup at Tioronda Falls, in Madam Brett Park. That’s Mount Beacon in the painting. This is Fishkill Creek, very near where it empties out into the Hudson River. The falls were absolutely exquisite with all the recent rain we’ve had, and the SunEden performed quite well. It certainly doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of my Soltek, but it only weighs three and a half pounds, and can support a large canvas! It has a shelf to set down a palette (or you can use the shelf itself as a palette) and a box that clamps on to hold all my paints and brushes. It will be great for those out-of-the-way painting locations that aren’t so close to the car. Everything fits in a backpack and it is light, light, light!

I loved painting this scene. Definitely going back soon!

There is a huge amount of water in Fishkill Creek these days, following the heavy rains we’ve had here in the east, combined with the snow melt. Beacon Falls is located just a couple of miles before the creek empties out into the Hudson River. There’s so much water that it’s traveling along a side spillway, and you can’t even see rock where it’s cascading over the falls.

I paint a lot of waterfalls and they usually don’t give me much trouble, but I have to say that this scene presented me with a real struggle! I’m going to try to get back there to do a couple more with different compositions and in different sizes. It’s a fabulous location, and I just love a good challenge!

In case you think you’re having a deja vu moment, yes, you’ve seen this before! I painted it a couple of days ago and posted it, but as I looked at it on the drying rails over the past few days, it didn’t quite look done to me. So, I made a few changes and additions, and I’m now posting the new version of the painting.

This little inlet, weaving out to the islands and ocean from Mt. Desert Island, was a favorite spot on our last trip to Maine. My husband and I took oodles of photos there, and I’ve been wanting to paint from them ever since! My plan is to do a couple of large paintings. I enjoy starting that process off with small color studies to help me determine which compositions are most worthy of enlarging, and make some decisions regarding what I will change from the photo and what I’ll keep the same.

Water Media and Life’s Tough Choices

Water-Based-Paints-800

You can click the image above to enlarge it.

These days, there are so many fabulous options for painting with water, if one doesn’t wish to use solvents. A reader made a comment on my blog, asking a question about these choices which I thought would make an interesting blog post.

From Dennis (Edited a bit for brevity. You can see his full comment in my February 25 post.):
….I am curious as to which paint you prefer to work with-artist grade water mixable oil colors or the Open acrylics by Golden? They both seem to be able to allow you the time needed to blend color. ….although I enjoy using Golden Heavy Body,{one of several brands in my paint box} for now when I need an acrylic with more open time I choose Atelier. What brand of water mixable oil do you prefer? Several years ago I tried the Artisan by W&N for plein air, and after two painting sessions, I went back to acrylics. At this time for plein air I am using pencil and/or colored pencil and those wonderful Pitt brush pens This year in addition I may choose to also use oil pastel and watercolor.

Thank you for the thought-provoking post, Dennis. My favorite medium is actually traditional oils, and I don’t mind using odor free solvents in and out of the studio. That being said, there are times when it is either wiser, or more convenient, or both to avoid solvents completely. There are also times we need other advantages of faster drying, easier to transport, quicker to work with, able to paint in a sketchbook, etc. One of the things I love about being an artist is the seemingly endless exploration of mediums, materials and possibilities. Let’s examine some of these other options.

Water mixable oils, even those labled “Artist Grade,” are never as pigment-loaded as traditional oils. They also do not handle exactly the same way. I feel I am already giving something up when I sacrifice pigment load. This is why I don’t use them all the time; I need to get something in return for what I give up — that is, the ability to paint in a place or situation where I would not be able to use traditional oils. The highest grade H2O oil paints I’ve found so far, that are of a consistency I like right out of the tubes, are Holbein Duo and Cobra. I have tried a few other brands, but these are the ones I try to keep stocked in my 5×7″ painting box, which travels with me all the time. I know I can use them anywhere, and can use my drinking water instead of a solvent.

Golden Open Acrylics are also excellent for these situations where you need longer blending time and workability, and cannot use solvents. Again, I have to sacrifice significant pigment load compared with my traditional oils, but the acrylics have the advantage of drying faster, and being able to get varnished and out to buyers sooner. Disadvantage: the larger tubes and jars that acrylics come in don’t fit in my 5×7″ paintbox! Also, I need to use about three times the amount of paint compared with my oils. The small palette in my 5×7 box just isn’t big enough for the amount of paint I need to mix, even for a tiny painting. For these reasons, my little box is stocked with the water mixable oil paints.

Golden OPENs still have a place in my life. They’re wonderful in the portrait/figure studio (especially short pose sessions which generally do not allow solvents). I love painting on sized matboard, which I cannot do with oils. Golden OPENs perform very well for plein air work on hot sunny days when I want to use acrylics. I can mix my colors, and they remain workable throughout a painting session. They don’t skin over on the palette, yet thicken to the point where when I reach the end of an outdoor session and it’s time to lay on the highlights, I have nice thick paint to do so!

If it’s not too hot outside, or if I’m in the studio, I can use my all-time favorite acrylic paints —- Golden FLUID Acrylics. When you dilute heavy body acrylics to a more fluid consistency, it dilutes the pigment and the paint goes streaky. Golden FLUID Acrylics are made with a much higher pigment load than a diluted heavy body paint. I find them to be the perfect consistency, and combined with the use of Golden’s Acrylic Glazing Liquid, the drying time is extended so that they are perfectly blendable, yet tack up fast enough to overpaint. The 1 oz. bottles are a perfect size to take out in the field with me, and I refill them from large bottles that I leave in the studio. For plein air work, I get to travel home with a dry painting, so I don’t have to bring a wet panel carrier out into the field. They dry and cure so quickly that I can have them varnished and out the door in a week. They are also wonderful for underpainting, then using Golden OPENs over the top, and the underpainting stays perfectly in place. Disadvantages: They will dry out on your palette and on your brushes if you’re not careful. You need to be able to work quickly and mix on the fly, and spray the palette frequently to keep the paint wet.

You mentioned the Atelier Interactive Acrylics in your comment, and as you can see from the photo, I have a set of my regular colors in that brand as well. I think they are very nice paints —- high pigment load and reasonably priced. As the Chroma company explains, these paints “interact” with the artist through a series of mediums that you can also see in the photo. These mediums can increase or decrease drying time of the paints, or even unlock dried paint to a workable consistency. What I’ve found is that without the mediums, the paints behave just like traditional, heavy body acrylics. I need to thin them to the consistency I want, and they skin over on my palette and dry quickly. No amount of spraying with water revives the dried paint, just like regular acrylics. Even though I could alter that with the Interactive mediums, I’d rather use paints that have the characteristics I need right out of the tubes. When painting out on location, the less I need to cart around with me, the better off I am. Those of you who work in the studio may find it’s no problem to deal with the adjustments of the paint.

This brings us to another option…..Gouache! Using just a watercolor palette, sketchbook, and a few small tubes of paint, gouache enables me to paint with all the opacity of oils and all the transparency of watercolor, in a fast-drying, water-based medium that illustrators have used for generations. Companies like Holbein and Winsor Newton have been making more lightfast, archival, artist grade versions of these paints, and they have gone from the illustrator’s desk to a fine art medium in a very short time. Disadvantages: Artist grade gouache is very expensive. When working in an opaque manner, it’s possible to go through quite a bit of paint in a short time. Although it shares the same binders as watercolor, gouache does not rewet easily. When the paint dries out on the palette, it cannot be revived to the juicy, creamy consistency necessary to work the same way as with paint just out of the tube. Some of the new palettes with seals around the edges do a pretty good job of keeping the paint moist and workable. A damp sponge left inside the palette helps to maintain the moisture.

Watercolor remains the ultimate sketching medium for the artist on the go. Although most of us prefer fresh paint from tubes out on the palette, watercolors revive quite well if not left sitting too long. A small pan set can go anywhere, and tucks inside a purse or shirt pocket with a small sketchbook or watercolor block.

In Dennis’ post, he brings up colored pencils and Pitt pens as ideal plein air mediums. I agree with him! In addition, there are water soluble colored pencils that can bridge the gap between watercolors and colored pencils, Cretacolor color sticks in sepia, white and black for sketching on mid-tone paper, charcoal, inks in many colors, and marker sets. It seems that every time I turn around, there is something new and exciting to try in my sketchbook!

Now, go paint! 😀

Every so often, especially in winter, I get tired of working in my studio. I have a little 5×7″ Guerrilla Painter pochade box that I keep stocked with an assortment of artist grade water mixable oil paints for these occasions. I can use them anywhere in the house, in a cafe, or for painting in my enclosed car, without having to use solvents. They perform quite well, and I love that they give me these opportunities to break away from the studio when I need to do so.

Tonight was one of those times. I set up a little still life on the kitchen counter, broke out my little “stealth painting box,” and had a wonderful evening! I adore this little box. It holds a couple of wet paintings and my paints. There is a little black shoulder bag available that just fits the box and has a couple of pockets for a few additional supplies. I can grab it and go at a moment’s notice, and be able to paint anywhere!

Here’s an image of my setup below. You can click on it to get a larger, clearer view:

This was such a fun painting to tackle. I definitely had my struggles here. Sometimes a sunset is so spectacular that you just can’t match the beauty you remember seeing. My palette for this painting was:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Lemon
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Pyrrole Red
Cerulean Blue
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue

A few days ago, I posted a series of four square sketches. It seems the winner for the one to paint larger was the winter scene, so I’ll be doing that one shortly.

These little Monet interpretations are so much fun to paint! This was my first go at one of his many Haystack paintings. I wish you could all see it in person, because it looks so much better than this digital representation!

These framed miniatures come with a mini easel to set them on, or can be hung salon style from a gold thread or ribbon. They are sent in gold gift boxes with gold bows to complete the “gem” effect!

When I saw this scene, I wondered if the person who was fishing realized that he was standing right where Thomas Cole did his famous painting, Lake with Dead Trees. Whenever I’m here at North South Lake and the surrounding area, I can feel the spirit of the land that drew the Hudson River School painters to these locations. Both Cole and Cropsey painted here beside this lake, and I’m sure many others too. That’s Roundtop Mountain in the distance, although it’s often confused with nearby (and similarly-shaped) Kaaterskill High Peak.

I painted this one in my little 5×7 box — perfect for “stealth painting” in all kinds of situations! 🙂

This is one of my favorite places to paint. I’ve done several paintings of this beaver pond in all seasons, both from photos and on location. I never get tired of it! You can click here to see images of the painting in progress.

The subtle colors and textures are so much nicer in the actual painting. A lot doesn’t show up in the photo, but if you’d like to see a larger picture of this painting, click the image below:

I liked the little square 6×6″ Beaver Pond Sunset so much that I did a few days ago, that I decided to do a larger, horizontal version of the painting. Above is the work in progress. You can see my photo reference taped to the top of the easel, and the small 6×6 painting on the lower left. There’s still lots more to add and adjust, but it’s off to a good start.

Below is an image showing the way I started this painting. The underpainting was done just with burnt sienna, beneath where the greens would go, and following the values and brushwork that I’ll be laying over the top with different colors.

One summer evening, I was sitting in my house upstate at sunset when the most amazing color started to form in the sky. I grabbed my camera and ran out back to the beaver pond in time to catch the blues, violets and pinks reflecting in the water. I’ve been meaning to paint from that photo ever since!

I opened up my little 5×7 pochade box, and nestled inside was a painting I’d totally forgotten about. It was a painting of my driveway upstate on a foggy morning, but overall the painting was too light, and didn’t convey the heavily overcast, dull atmosphere as well as I’d like. So, I took it out and completely repainted it. Much happier with it now!

This is my first painting of 2011. It felt great to get back to my brushes again after a rather extended holiday vacation! This painting of Kaaterskill Falls was done from two studies done on location plus a photo reference. I think I’ll do a 20×30″ or 24×36″ version of the scene soon.

Kaaterskill Falls is the tallest waterfall in New York State, and was a favorite painting spot of the Hudson River School painters. It’s one of my favorite spots too!

While there’s still time to ship before the holidays, I’ll be bumping up some of my favorite smaller, unsold works that would be wonderful holiday gifts for that special someone. Give the gift of art — a celebration of beauty and creative inspiration. Purchase two and receive free shipping!

Some time ago, there was a fantastic rainbow over the lake just before sunset. I grabbed my camera and ran outside to get some photo references. This was painted from one of the photos I took. The light and colors were almost too amazing to believe.

These Monet Minis are so much fun to paint! I loved working with the orange and blue complements he used for his sunrise painting. Since it’s so tiny, I bumped up the saturation a bit in my version. Postage stamp size paintings tend to disappear if there’s not enough color and contrast! Here’s a closer view:

Every once in awhile, I forget to post a painting. Sometimes I don’t realize until years later, when somebody requests a painting of a certain subject. In this case, I was asked if I had a painting of yellow roses. In searching through all my yellow rose paintings (and believe me, I had no idea I’d done so many!), I came across this one, which never got posted to my blog. This ended up being the chosen painting. I’m sorry about the glare in the photo. (It’s a good thing I’m a painter and not a photographer!) This one’s off to a new home tomorrow, but there are more yellow rose paintings floating around the studio if anybody else is interested!

This is a painting done partially on location during the summer. I drove around with my friend Karen looking for a painting spot near the Hudson, and we finally came upon this marina view in Catskill. Around the bend in the painting lies the Hudson River. I loved the blue of this sail cover, and the colorful floats piled up on the bow, waiting for adventurous souls to go out for a sail. I didn’t have time to finish it on location and it’s sat in the studio for a few months now, just waiting for the finishing touches! I finally pulled it out this morning and finished it off.

Many of my finishing touches are done at this ArtQuest desk. The easel part adjusts to any angle, and there is a support for a monitor/laptop. I use the keyboard shelf for my palette. I love this thing!

I was painting at Rockwood again, this time from up high on the hillside, looking southward downriver. You can see the Tarrytown Lighthouse from there and the Tappan Zee Bridge, with the New York City skyline in the distance. It’s a spectacular vantage point on the river. Unfortunately, a huge development has been built along the left shoreline. I took it out of the painting so I could view the scene the way it used to be!

My friend Deborah and I went to paint at Rockwood today along the Hudson River. This may well have been the last of the Great Fall Days, and we didn’t want to miss it! The temperature was around 60 degrees, and the park was loaded with friendly people and happy dogs. Deb and I were pretty happy too!

This sailboat stuck around in the field of my painting for about a half hour, tacking back and forth in the river. Just before I finished, a couple got up on the large rocks to admire the view, and I popped them into the painting also.

Here’s a photo I took of the scene as we were getting our gear set up:

“First Warm Day at the Falls” might sound like a funny title for a painting that I’m posting in late autumn. This painting was actually started in the spring, on location. It needed a few touch-ups in the studio, so finally that’s been done and it’s ready to be revealed at last. It so nice to see it finally finished up. I went with a group of seven plein air painters to paint at Cooper Lake in Woodstock, New York. The lake is gorgeous, deep blue and clean, with views of the Catskill Mountains in the background. We ended up separating into two groups. Three of us went down the road and found this nice spot with a fallen tree, which added an interesting foreground element to the scene. We later found out that the other four painters had been told to leave because they’d strayed off the road, and this lake is the reservoir for the city of Kingston. Fortunately for the three of us, you are apparently permitted to paint from any public roadway, so I got to stay.

This is another painting from one of my favorite locations in the Catskills. The chasm to the right, “Hell’s Hole”, goes down over 100 feet. My friend Tarryl was standing to my right as I painted this, and I wanted to tether her to a boulder to be sure she wouldn’t take a tumble!

I loved the way the strong light illuminated the foreground rock ledge, and drew the eye through the tunnel to the waterfall beyond. I feel like I could paint this scene a hundred times and not get tired of it.

This was painted last week, the day after the larger Boscobel painting posted previously. I was actually planning to do a large painting at Cold Spring, but when I arrived there, it was so freezing cold on that open area of the river, that I went back to Boscobel instead. Even up on the bluff overlooking Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River, it was warmer than the other location. The marsh was even more beautiful than the day before, and due to the chilly weather, I painted small and went home earlier. I’m not ready for winter!

I wanted to paint this scene backlit, but by the time I got myself out there this morning, it was a bit sidelit, and not as heavily silhouetted as my vision. Still, it wasn’t hard to motivate myself to make the most of the beautiful scene looking out through the treeline to the meadow and beyond. Pathways are always so inviting, and the fall foliage in the Hudson River Valley is nearly at peak.

I’m continuing on my journey to thicker paint application, which results in brushwork changes as well. I’m liking the three dimensional paint surface and mixing up huge piles of color!

What a gorgeous fall day it turned out to be today, following a few days of dismal, rainy weather. Our waterfalls are gushing and the foliage is nearly at peak. My dog sat beside me, impatient as usual when I’m painting instead of paying attention to him.

I’m trying to constantly remind myself to put down more paint, more paint, more paint. I’m reminded of quotes I’ve heard here and there, such as, “Put out twice as much paint as you think you need and use it all!” A quote I’ve heard attributed to Robert Gamblin (of Gamblin Oil Paints) is, “Paint like you own a paint company!” I’m eager to add more of that third dimension to my work in oils. My paintings will be taking a little longer to dry, but it will be worth it!

Today was the annual Artists on Location paintout for Garrison Art Center. I drove down from upstate at 5:50am with two artist friends and we decided to spend the morning painting in the beautiful waterfront park in Cold Spring on Hudson. There was a pinky glow on the horizon suring the sunrise, and when I was about half way finished with the painting, some beautiful, wispy pink clouds moved into the scene just at the right time to pop them in. This photo was taken about a half hour before finishing it, so it’s pretty close to done here. We had to deliver the completed paintings to the Art Center by 2pm, and they were all auctioned off in a live auction at 5pm.

There is an old cemetery and arboretum up in the mountains with a fabulous overlook of the Catskills. I couldn’t resist this garden gate with the bright green field inviting me in for the view!

Dreamy Fall Morning at Boscobel — Hudson River painting

It’s hard to beat a beautiful fall day of painting at Boscobel Restoration, along the Hudson River in Garrison, New York. The warm color in the sky was there when we arrived, but it didn’t last long. The water was shimmering, and the rusty oranges were just starting their assault on the greens in Constitution Marsh. In a couple more weeks, the marsh will be ablaze with reds. Helicopters came and went from West Point, birds chirped, and tourists strolled the grounds. The barge and red tug making their way upriver were the crowning touch. It was a stellar day!

I’ve been wanting to paint this view of the Thomas Cole house from the garden path for years! I had some friends visiting from out of town, so I finally got to do it while they took the house tour and strolled around the grounds. The flowers were so gorgeous, and the yellow exterior of the house glowed, even under the porch roof! That honey locust tree really is that huge; it’s 200 years old! There were a dozen on the property in Cole’s time, hence the name of the estate— Locust Grove.
