"I love the new painting! It's actually a little more golden and fluid than it looks in the pic and I love the movement; everything in my house is a little on the warm and yellow and gold side so it could hang pretty much anywhere. It's going to the framer shortly and I look forward to having it up :-)"

"I just wanted to share that my father-in-law absolutely LOVES your painting. He loves the frame and said that he's never owned a real oil painting. ???? But most importantly, he loves the subject matter and he and my husband spent a lot of time reminiscing this morning about hikes they took there years ago. This part of the Hudson is, by far, their favorite! Thank you SO much for making this Christmas gift PERFECT."

------------------------------------------ If you haven't seen the two-DVD set, "The Impressionists", you don't know what you're missing!

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter who lived from 1848-1894. He is considered one of the painters of the French Impressionist school, though looking at his work, one would never think that! His paintings are more firmly rooted in realism, with its harder edges and more muted color schemes than so many of his contemporaries. In addition to being a wonderful painter, Caillebotte had a law degree with a license to practice, and was also an engineer. Talk about a multi-talented individual!

I was commissioned to do this miniature version of Caillebotte’s 7 foot by 9 foot Paris street scene. Online images of the painting appeared quite cool in color, but then the client sent me a photo he took of the painting in a museum. That image showed many more ochres and browns. I preferred that slightly warmer interpretation, and went for something in between in my own version.

Scaling down an enormous, mural-like painting to 3″ across is no easy task. I imagined that the actual painting in real life is much more painterly than when it’s shrunk down to a tiny fraction of its size, as we see on a computer screen. Aside from the technical difficulties of putting in all that detail in a tiny painting, it would lose much of its character. It required considerable editing to keep enough detail in there without overwhelming the small space. I’d like to believe I successfully met that challenge!

My miniature works are all sent in gold gift boxes with table easels for a curio cabinet or side table, and most are framed too. (See below.) They are usually done as commissions, but occasionally I have one on hand, ready to go to a new home. They make fabulous gift items. Here are images of some of my miniature originals. These three are spoken for, but I’d be happy to do one for you!

This one has sold quickly, but you can see a similar painting of Kaaterskill Falls here if you’re interested in purchasing one.

This was painted on location at Kaaterskill Falls in the spring, but I didn’t get around to putting the image up until now! I sure am going to miss this place during the winter months. Can’t wait to get back there.

This scene was painted at North South Lake Campground in the Catskill Mountains. Just as I was thinking it could use a little splash of color, three kayakers came along to help me out! They provided the perfect finishing touch. This vista was painted by many of the Hudson River School painters, including Thomas Cole and Jasper Cropsey.

This painting is from one of those Hudson River School spots I love to visit at Frederic Church’s Olana homestead, though I never seem to have the time to paint it on location. It’s been in my “To Do” image file for ages. I finally got around to doing it from photos in two sizes — this 12×16″, and also a 5×7″, which you can see at this link.

This is a location that I discovered this year. The first time I painted here I completely bombed out. The challenge had me returning again and again, and I was finally able to work through the problems and get some paintings I liked. I was especially pleased by this one. Finally you can see 19 of my waterfall paintings in one place! For the month of November, I have a show of Hudson Valley Waterfalls hanging at the Ruth Keeler Memorial Library in North Salem, NY. The show can be viewed during regular library hours.

The paintings are for sale both at the library and here on my website. To see the paintings that are in the show, you can click the Ruth Keeler Library Gallery category here on my blog, and scroll down the paintings. I think there are still a couple that haven’t yet made it onto my blog, but they will be added soon. Or better still, go check out the show and you can see them all in person!
