"Jamie, your painting arrived in perfect condition! And, as I expected, it looks even better ‘in person’ than on the computer screen. Thank you so much for your careful packing and wonderful painting."

"...Today I finally surprised [my wife] with the actual painting! It is her birthday! And I just wanted to let you know the we both absolutely love it!! She was so so surprised, and just speechless.... Thank you again for being so flexible and good to work with! "I love the new painting! It's actually a little more golden and fluid than it looks in the pic and I love the movement; everything in my house is a little on the warm and yellow and gold side so it could hang pretty much anywhere. It's going to the framer shortly and I look forward to having it up :-)"

"I just wanted to share that my father-in-law absolutely LOVES your painting. He loves the frame and said that he's never owned a real oil painting. ???? But most importantly, he loves the subject matter and he and my husband spent a lot of time reminiscing this morning about hikes they took there years ago. This part of the Hudson is, by far, their favorite! Thank you SO much for making this Christmas gift PERFECT."

------------------------------------------ If you haven't seen the two-DVD set, "The Impressionists", you don't know what you're missing!

    the-impressionists.jpg

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

At the northeastern edge of the Catskill Mountains lies Winter Clove, home to many stunning ravines and waterfalls. This one, along the Kiskatom Creek, has a beautiful covered bridge above it, and a clear, nearly viridian-covered pool at the bottom. I went for a hike here with my husband, and had to make a return trip with my paints!

This painting of a moored boat with dramatic skies was painted from a photo I took a few years ago. I made several attempts at a watercolor rendition of this scene before coming up with this one, and hope to do more. I like the drama of it, and the way these colors work together. Below is an image that you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting.

This is one of the little waterfalls at our place in upstate NY. With all the rain we’ve had this year, my springtime retreat time has been extended, and this little gem is still running full force even though we’re almost into July!

While out hiking in early spring, I came upon this stream with several arched trees extending from the shorelines over the water from either side. As the creek meandered, the shoreline trees formed arches through the various planes of the scene. I took a lot of photos to do a series of these arched tree forms, and hope to return soon to paint some of them on location. They present interesting compositional opportunities focused on the arches, and reflections in the distance, and/or transparency of the water as it nears the foreground. This fabulous scene was painted from a photo I took on a friend’s balcony overlooking Candlewood Lake. There are 180 degree views, and I’ve done a number of paintings at different times of day from this spot, facing different directions. This is definitely one of my favorites! This was painted this past spring at the Pawling NY boardwalk along the Appalachian Trail. There is a wooden footbridge over a small river there, and both sides provide exquisite views of marshes filled with birds and all kinds of wildlife. I love these birch trees that surround North South Lake in the Catskills, which is one of the sites where the Hudson River School artists loved to visit and sketch. We went for a walk there recently on an overcast day, and the path made the perfect entry to the painting, framed by some of my favorite trees. I’ve been doing a lot more watercolor work lately. It lends itself to these atmospheric renderings and a loose approach where the paint can make its own statement. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:
