I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

Yes, it’s really me! I’ve been painting lots of florals lately. Flowers have always been outside my wheelhouse. I’ve painted them in still lifes, in a more realistic/illustrative style, but always felt they were foreign objects that I didn’t really understand. I have the blackest thumb around and can’t even grow them! (Though I am determined to try to change that next year…) I wanted to take on a new challenge this summer as well as do more watercolor work, so I combined the two. I’ve been purchasing flowers every week, and working toward finding my own expressive style by filling a sketchbook with studies, and doing watercolor paintings from these weekly bouquets. I think I’m really going to enjoy painting florals when the winter chill makes it hard for me to get outside for plein air work.

First Day of Summer at Olana

Posted by Jamie on June 26th, 2018

IMG_2915

I was painting at Olana (home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Church) last week on the first day of summer. The weather was perfect and I was with good friends; what could be better?! I’d planned to paint the view from the top by the mansion, but it was closed off due to construction. So, I went to my favorite place overlooking the river, and painted there instead. There were wonderful long shadows on the ground when I started, so I made sure to get them in early, before they disappeared!

Here’s a view of just the painting:

North South Lake is one of my favorite painting spots for birches and atmosphere. In this painting, I got both. The Hudson River School painters also favored this location. I love the way pinks and violets play together, so I explored that interaction in this painting. You can click the image below for a larger, clearer view of the painting.

I had a wonderful autumn day last week painting with friends along the Hudson River. We went to Boscobel Restoration in Garrison NY, where there is a long bluff overlooking Constitution Marsh and the river. The marsh was just starting to take on that reddish autumn glow, and an enormous sailing yacht went by, providing a great focal point out in the river. This is always one of my favorite vistas to paint — especially as the marsh turns to warm colors in spring and fall.

I’ve been doing a bunch of paintings from photos I took during our recent trip to New Hampshire. We took the cog railway up Mt. Washington one day (great fun!) and enjoyed the majestic views of the Presidential Range from the top. The Appalachian Trail runs along the tops of several of the mountains, following the ridge line on the journey up to Maine. I captured this view of a lone hiker on the ridge and couldn’t wait to get my brushes going on it.

Many of the Hudson River School painters traveled to the White Mountains. I visited a number of the spots where they painted on my trip, and it’s not hard to see why they were so inspired by the views they encountered!

Fall is just beginning here, but I still have a bunch of my summer paintings to post! If you’ve been tagging along on my blog, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve loved doing these watercolor creek paintings this year. Some have focused on reflections, some on foliage like overhanging tree limbs and branches, and this one is all about the light streaming through from the back of the painting and hitting the water. I’m going to really miss these warm summer days, standing along the stream banks with my easel. I think I’ll have to frame a few of these and hang them in my house to remind me of what it felt like!

This graceful pear tree is in our yard. I’ve been wanting to paint it in all seasons, and finally at least got around to the winter version, which provides strong contrasts between the dark tree, sky, and snowy background.

We used to get pears every summer on this tree, and a big mama bear would visit with her cubs to take the fruit. When our second pear tree died, this one stopped producing fruit. This year, it must have found another pear tree somewhere to cross-pollinate, and once again we have fruit on the tree. No sign yet of the bears!

Tucked away behind North Mountain, in the northeastern region of the Catskill Mountains, there is a beautiful resort called Winter Clove Inn. I was thrilled when I was contacted to do a commission of the Inn as a wedding gift by a relative of the groom, who was married on the front porch of the inn. It gave me a wonderful excuse to visit a place I love multiple times!

At the northeastern edge of the Catskill Mountains lies Winter Clove, home to many stunning ravines and waterfalls. This one, along the Kiskatom Creek, has a beautiful covered bridge above it, and a clear, nearly viridian-covered pool at the bottom. I went for a hike here with my husband, and had to make a return trip with my paints!

This painting of a moored boat with dramatic skies was painted from a photo I took a few years ago. I made several attempts at a watercolor rendition of this scene before coming up with this one, and hope to do more. I like the drama of it, and the way these colors work together. While out hiking in early spring, I came upon this stream with several arched trees extending from the shorelines over the water from either side. As the creek meandered, the shoreline trees formed arches through the various planes of the scene. I took a lot of photos to do a series of these arched tree forms, and hope to return soon to paint some of them on location. They present interesting compositional opportunities focused on the arches, and reflections in the distance, and/or transparency of the water as it nears the foreground. I love these birch trees that surround North South Lake in the Catskills, which is one of the sites where the Hudson River School artists loved to visit and sketch. We went for a walk there recently on an overcast day, and the path made the perfect entry to the painting, framed by some of my favorite trees. I’ve been doing a lot more watercolor work lately. It lends itself to these atmospheric renderings and a loose approach where the paint can make its own statement. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

I have been wanting to paint this scene ever since I saw it for the first time a few years ago. No matter what time of day or season, this view in the Catskills is spectacular. My husband and I drove past a few weeks ago and I took some photos. During the big snowstorm last week, I started the painting; it seemed appropriate! I’d like to do a large format horizontal of this view also….someday.

I have a favorite field I like to paint from at Frederic Church’s Olana estate in Hudson NY. Hudson River School artist Church did a lot of sunset paintings from that area of his property. I was walking along the trail past one of his painting spots close to sunset when I caught this opening in the trees, overlooking the Hudson River through the clearing. I started to paint it on location, but couldn’t finish in time before it got dark. I snapped a bunch of photos while painting, and finally had a chance to finish it up today. I definitely want to check out this scene again at other times of day, and in other seasons. They’ve been working a lot on clearing overgrowth to bring some of these views back that have gotten overgrown as the years go by. I’m always excited to see what’s new in the landscape there!

I’m fortunate to live by a lake with a great sunrise view. This was painted on a morning with a haze over the lake, creating spectacular colors as the sun came up. It glowed yellow-orange as it emerged above the tree line, casting warmth and light upon the whole scene.

I just brought this painting over to RiverWinds Gallery today, along with five others, for their grand re-opening celebration. The reception for the new show will be this Saturday, January 14, from 5-8pm. The address is 172 Main Street, Beacon NY. If you cannot make it to the opening, the gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6pm.

This is one of the many stunning, old trees at Olana, home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. This tree is right near the site of Church’s old studio. I went on a drawing/painting spree with trees this year, and especially enjoyed working in these warm sepia colors on toned paper.

This drawing is one of a series of three trees, all done in the same sepia tones. The other two will be posted over the next two days. They can be purchased individually, or subtract 20% if you’d like to have all three to hang as a triptych. They are framed with identical ivory mats and gorgeous custom gold frames, and make a beautiful grouping in a classic style.

This weathered pine leans over North South Lake, nestled in the Catskill Mountains. I loved its character, and the opportunity to draw in the company of friends on a beautiful day by the lake.

This drawing is one of a series of three trees, all done in the same sepia tones. One was posted yesterday, and the final one will be posted tomorrow. They can be purchased individually, or subtract 20% if you’d like to have all three to hang as a triptych. They are framed with identical ivory mats and gorgeous custom gold frames, and make a beautiful grouping in a classic style.

This painting is from one of those Hudson River School spots I love to visit at Frederic Church’s Olana homestead, though I never seem to have the time to paint it on location. This is Hudson River School artist Frederic Church’s original home on his Olana estate. He lived here in “Cosy Cottage” before building the huge mansion atop the hill overlooking the Hudson River. I love this view from the side, with the hill in the distance and farm fields below. I’ve been painting it for a couple of years in different seasons and formats, and checking it out at different times of day to see the lighting variations. I really want to do a very large painting of the scene, so in the meantime, I’m exploring what form that will take! Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

Driving into the Catskill Mountains through Kaaterskill Clove on Route 23a, there is a spectacular waterfall around a horseshoe bend in the road. A large sign there marks the trailhead for Kaaterskill Falls, and so many people mistakenly think this lovely cascade is the famous Kaaterskill Falls. Beautiful as it is, clearly it is not in the running for the title of the tallest waterfall in New York State, but it is certainly much easier to get to! It’s another half mile up a steep and rocky mountain trail to arrive at the base of Kaaterskill, so I can almost understand those who would rather mistake it than do the hike!

I actually don’t mind doing the hike, so when I go here, I’m always hiking all they way up to the larger falls and painting Kaaterskill. I figured it was time to give this little beauty its due, so I planned a day to paint with friends at the more diminutive (but still gorgeous) Bastion Falls. I found it a more difficult subect than Kaaterskill in spite of its smaller size, and loved both the location and the challenge.

Following two days of painting for the Olana Plein Air Event, (home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Church), this is the painting I selected to put into the auction that marked the culmination of the event. Actually, I laid out all the paintings I’d done during that period, and my husband chose this one! The painting sold at the auction.

Thirty wonderful artists were juried into the event. With tough competition, I felt very fortunate indeed to have been selected to participate. Even though I live so close and get to paint at Olana frequently, it’s always a magical experience.

I had an irresistible invitation to paint at somebody’s home overlooking the Schoharie Creek. There were gorgeous views of Stony Clove Notch, but I was drawn to this upstream composition of the creek as it wound through her property. I scrambled halfway down (and back up again!) the steep slope with all my painting gear, but the reward of the vista was well worth the effort.

The waterfalls by my house are raging this time of year as the snow melts up on the mountain. This waterfall is always the first one to dry up, so I was determined to paint this one first! Most years, by the time I get out there, it’s already dry. It used to be a split waterfall, running in two cascades, but for some reason, that second water trail is blocked, so I just painted it as a single fall. I’ll have to climb up there to see what’s blocking the left side! The most dramatic feature to this waterfall is the large, white slab of rock that juts off to the right.

This was painted from a scenic drive on Bear Mountain. Facing upriver there’s a great view of Iona Island (which I’ve also painted many times), and downriver is this fabulous vista through the Hudson Highlands. The Appalachian Trail crosses the Hudson on this bridge. There were large boats and barges going by, and sailboats off in the distance, which I put into the painting as I saw them. With the autumn colors, it was truly a spectacular day. It’s taken me awhile to get around to taking the photo of the painting and posting it. But the good news is that by now the painting is dry and can be sent out to a new home!

There is a park along the Hudson River in Irvington, New York, which has nice views of the New York City skyline. A client suggested I check it out, so I went with my camera one extremely windy, cold autumn day. It certainly wasn’t the kind of day I’d want to be out painting along the river! However, there were wonderfully dramatic skies and choppy water reflecting light from the breaks in the clouds. The spray flew up in all directions, and I nearly got soaked out there just taking pictures! This painting was done from references obtained during that expedition.

This painting was started early one morning up on Bear Mountain, overlooking the Hudson River and Iona Island. The strong, early morning like lit up the river, and the island and mountains were all silhouetted. As I worked and the morning wore on, that colorful, angled morning light gave way to a different scene. Much as I initially intended to hold onto what I started with, I found myself changing the character of the light for a different, though still beautiful interpretation of the scene. I went back the following day to finish it, and caught the barge and tug going by, as well as the freight trains crossing over the bridge from the island. The box cars provided some great pops of color!

This is the view of the Hudson River as seen from Hasbrouck Park in Kingston. This spot was recently added to the Hudson River School Art Trail, as one of the places where the Hudson River School artists visited and painted. It features one of the enormous ships we sometimes see along the river. The ship gives some scale to the width of the river at that spot, and the height of my vantage point overlooking the scene. I also placed some sailboats near the ship as they passed by, so that viewers can get an idea of how massive that ship is!

This was possibly my last fall hike up to the base of Kaaterskill Falls, one of the Hudson River School painters’ locations that I love the most. It was a cold day, and I was the last of my painting group to leave the spot. One of the park rangers was up there with me, with occasional hikers coming along to view the magnificent waterfall. I was glad to see they finally had a ranger there to try and dissuade hikers from venturing up the sides of the falls, where two have already died this year.

I’ve done so many paintings up here, but I think this was the first time I did a 2:1 ratio at this spot. I really like the way it works with these proportions. I think this layout gives a truer impression of how tall the falls are.

This time of year, one of my favorite painting adventures involves taking the ski lift up Hunter Mountain with all of my painting equipment, and painting the magnificently colored Catskills from the top. The ski trails create openings in the tree line, revealing mountains and valleys beyond, with paths winding down the mountain. What struck me for this particular painting was the way the brilliant orange-yellow foliage on the near hillside lit up against the dark, backlit mountain beyond. Since this is such a long horizontal format, it’s hard to see it in this small space on my blog. I love painting these panoramic vistas. Pratt Rock has a gorgeous view that overlooks a valley in the Catskills, with Schoharie Creek running through the farmlands between the mountains. I climbed up with all my painting gear, and set up on one of the rock ledges above the cliffs, facing east. I’ve been wanting to get back her to paint for a long time. It was such a thrill!

I started out working with just monochrome values in acrylic:

Later, I added transparent glazes of color to arrive at the finished painting. I compensated for all the blue-greens in the scene by pushing some yellows and reds for more varied color. You can click the image below for a larger view of the painting:

This spot along Catskill Creek is one of the locations frequented by Hudson River School artist Thomas Cole and others. I was drawn to the brilliant morning light flashing off the enormous rock formation along the creek, creating strong contrasts with the dark greens alongside it, and the warm colors in the water. I used a combination of different types of acrylics for this painting, starting with the new Golden High Flow paints and transparent drips and splatters, and gradually moving to heavier bodied, opaque paints to solidify the forms and bring the work to completion. This is one of my favorite ways to work. I love the complexity it yields, with so many different techniques working together in harmony, yet maintaining a looseness and some abstract qualities.

On Thursday morning, I went to Platte Clove with a friend. It was a hot day and we wanted to find a cool spot. We hiked past the charming red cottage of the Platte Clove Conservation Area, down the steep, slippery path, and were rewarded by the sound of rushing water and sparkling falls in the morning light. The rocks glistened red and orange in the morning, though they started to cool in color temperature in the afternoon. The greens and rusts in the water were captivating. I don’t know how tall this waterfall is; I’ll have to research that. But I’d guess it’s over 100 feet high. I stayed at a spot about halfway up the slope. My friend went down to water level.

I was there with my husband a few weeks ago and did a watercolor sketch. This time, I brought my ultra-light pastel setup. Sometimes I arrive on location and wish I’d brought different media than what was in my pack. This time I felt like I had the perfect medium to capture the contrasts and strong colors I saw.

As for trying to find a cool spot on a hot day, we actually ended up being chilly there by the waterfall! There was cool mist in the air that seemed to stay within the bowl formed by the rocks surround the falls. Every so often, water would splash on my pastel from somewhere above. I think it accumulated on the leaves until droplets let loose, and they always seemed to have to land on my painting!

I’ll bet you were all expecting to see the conclusion of the oil painting I’ve been working on from this very vantage point! Well, I decided to meet an old friend for an early lunch today, so couldn’t get out on location in the morning to finish that one up. However, I was thinking that one very effective way to study the scene many more times would be to do it in several different media. While examining the vista on location yesterday morning, I was thinking about how I’d approach it in watercolor. This painting is the result, which I painted last night from a photo I’d taken earlier in the day.

I painted this with the new QoR watercolor paints by Golden Artist Colors. I sampled some from the Golden factory a couple of months ago, before they were sent out to stores, and subsequently bought a boatload of tubes when they became available. I just love these paints! They are really vibrant and intense, and most importantly, they rewet very easily when they dry out in my palette. For a multi-media artist who’s not doing watercolors every day and thus keeping the paints moist, they are ideal. Most of the painting was done with a #6 squirrel mop, and then I did the fine lines and details with a #6 sable round.

As for the oil painting, I’m hoping to go back on Friday morning and hopefully finish that one up. But if I’m not able to finish it then, it gives me a good excuse to return yet again to this amazing spot high above Kaaterskill Clove, and contemplate all the Hudson River School painters who stood there before me.

Day Two at the Top of Kaaterskill Falls

I made a lot of progress today, but by 9:30am, the sun had come around the tree line and illuminated the foreground. I am determined to catch it in shadow in the painting, but it might take one more visit to be able to finish this off so early in the morning, unless I finish it from a photo. The scene beyond the painting is bleached out because the painting was upright and not catching as much light as the vista beyond. But notice how light the foreground is in the actual scene above, which was photographed around noon. Now compare it to the image below, which is how I find the view early in the morning, with the dark foreground I crave!

So I guess it will be awhile longer before I can post the finished painting. But I’m determined to get it done this week!

When I arrived at the top of Kaaterskill Falls early this morning, the scene looked nothing like it does in the image above. In fact, the values were completely reversed, with the foreground completely in shadow! Heres the view I started with:

I really liked that dark foreground pulling the viewer into the light beyond. Within a couple of hours, the sun poked above the tree line and spilled light all over the delicious darks. It happened in an instant, and although I like the light foreground too, I decided to stick with my game plan, and return early tomorrow morning to complete the painting the way I had intended. The light foreground painting will have to wait for another day! With a little luck, this one will get finished tomorrow.

People pass by this beautiful waterfall around the horseshoe bend on Route 23a, heading through Kaaterskill Clove into the mountains. There is a big sign next to it that says, “Kaaterskill Falls”. But this is not Kaaterskill Falls; rather, the trail that leads up the mountainside to the base of Kaaterskill Falls begins at this point! This significant, but smaller charmer, is Bastion Falls. I’ve walked past it many, many times on my way up the trail to paint the famous Kaaterskill Falls. For once I decided to stay at the trail head and sketch Bastion Falls.

I had my little dog BB with me, and I’d spent the entire morning working on a larger painting from a second tier of this waterfall. I went home for a late lunch, returning with my dog, lightweight pastel setup, and a gardening cushion to put on a rock to sit on. I have to say, I really loved working on this one. It’s still in a sketchy stage and I was considering finishing it; but some things are best left with the spontaneous freshness and expressive strokes that further refinement can so often obliterate. I’ve decided to call it “done” just the way it is. It has the energy, movement, and high contrast that I wanted to capture. And I want to go back and do another!

My husband and I rented a rowboat over the summer at North South Lake. As we were rounding a bend in the lake, we spooked this Great Blue Heron. I managed to capture a quick photo of him just as he was about to take flight. In looking through my images the other day, I thought this would make a great abstracted painting, with lots of movement, color complements, and contrasts. This 9×12 acrylic will probably be the predecessor to a larger version in the near future!

Second Place Award at Olana Plein Air event!

On Saturday, October 5, I had the great honor of receiving the Second Place award at the Olana Plein Air event. Entry into the event was highly competitive and they only took 25 of us to begin with, so I was especially grateful to receive the award among such an accomplished group of artists. Olana is the homestead of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church. His 250 acre property and Moorish style mansion are a painter’s haven at any time of year, but especially in fall.

We had two and a half days to paint. I was feeling stressed by time factors because I had my dogs at home and knew I would not be able to spend as much as I’d like on location. I had a petsitter walk them at noon, but that still didn’t give me until sunset, and of course sunset is The time to paint at Olana!

This is a view off Ridge Road at Olana, and it’s one of my special favorite spots. It features Kaaterskill Clove in the distance, which was one of the areas painted by many of the Hudson River School painters. Knowing I was pressed for time, I set my easel out at the site at 7:45am on the first day, and then went to the 8am breakfast orientation/registration meeting. When the meeting broke, I was all set to paint. As I was nearing the end of the painting, this fabulous barge and tugboat went by! Sometimes they appear at the wrong time in the painting process, but I pretty much had that area completed and was able to pop them in as they passed.

I did five paintings during the two and a half days, and in the end, was torn between two of them in deciding what to submit for the juror and auction. Each artist had to select just one painting. Everybody’s paintings were beautiful!

Many thanks to the Olana and Columbia County Council for the Arts staffs for their hard work before, after, and during the event, and to all the art lovers who came to the auction and bid on paintings. I’d also like to thank my fellow painters for making it such an enjoyable event and being so supportive of one another.

I painted here in Cold Spring on a gorgeous day with a group of artist friends. I was in the mood to do a tree portrait, but didn’t want to ignore the fact that I was also along the Hudson River. When I came upon this beautiful, leaning willow tree near the pier, I knew I’d found my spot for the day. Beyond the pier is Storm King Mountain. This painting was started on location and finally finished up in the studio this week. It was one of those cold, overcast, pre-winter days that generally lack excitement, but the falls were spectacular and made all the drama.

I went out on the patio with my paints on this gorgeous, nearly-Autumn day, enjoying the sounds of birds nearby and waterfalls in the distance while I painted. The fall colors were just starting to creep into the landscape. I love this time of year!

This is a portrait of Rebecca West, painted from an old book of black and white celebrity photos. Working from black and white images can be very liberating, as it frees up my color sense and gives me all the information I need in the form of values only. This background was done in acrylic in several layers using many different printing and painting techniques. Over that, I painted the portrait with fairly thick watercolor, allowing the spatters and drips to happen where I felt they would most benefit the piece. I’m planning to do a series of these, but probably won’t be able to do more of them for a few weeks.

Platte Clove Cascade and Olana Workshop

This painting depicts one of those clear, cool cascades in Platte Clove, where I spent many hot summer days painting. It has the feeling of being deep in the refuge of the shaded mountain forest. Most of the painting was done on location, and some finishing touches were added in the studio. It is one of my two entries for the Twilight Park show this year, which is August 10 and 11, at the Twilight Park Clubhouse. This show brings out the best artists of the Catskills, and many from the Hudson Valley journey up to submit works as well.

If you’re interested in attending my Olana workshop from August 13-15, don’t forget to register asap so that you can be included for supplies! Olana has grants to subsidize this workshop, so it’s a great opportunity to paint at one of the dramatic Hudson River School sites, receive some painting tips, and have supplies covered at an extremely reasonable cost. Information about the workshop is on their website. (Scroll down below the cancelled writing workshop for the Landscape Painting workshop!)

This is my converted barn artist’s retreat, which sits at the base of the Eastern escarpment of the Catskill Mountain range. At twilight, the mountainside and tree line have the sun behind them, throwing light up toward the sky, and the lights in the house glow yellow-orange from the reflection of the warm wood interior. The long row of windows at the bottom is my studio.

This painting makes me feel like I’m coming home at the end of a day out hiking in the woods, which is exactly what I was doing when I took the reference photo from which I did this painting. I hope you can also feel like you’re stepping off the woodland trail, and welcomed by the glimmering lights from within the house.

This painting was done with the brand new Golden High Flow acrylics, which I just got a few days ago. I’ll be posting a review of them this week once I’ve had a chance to work with them a bit more, so stay tuned!

This is a scene along the Hudson River in Cold Spring, New York. I’m really enjoying doing splashy acrylic paintings on watercolor these days. I treat it like a transparent watercolor to start, using thinned Golden Airbrush paints in just a few transparent colors, splattering paint and working into it, and working light to dark in a traditional watercolor fashion. Then I go to opaque color where I want a less transparent effect. I’ve been working on this approach with acrylics for about a year now, and I feel like it’s finally starting to come together on a more consistent basis. I’m liking this one a lot!

Here’s an image you can click for a larger, clearer view:

I’ve been working in the studio more lately and have noticed that I’m feeling even more exhausted than when I was traveling to locations. Yesterday the thought occurred to me that maybe the glare from working off references on my computer screen is bothering my eyes and brain, resulting in that tired feeling. Last night I decided to print out a bunch of large photos to work off of instead of staring at the screen. I feel so much better! Maybe working off printed photos will help some of you other artists out there, if you’ve had similar reactions to long days of painting while staring at a reference image on a computer screen.

Sunsets at Frederic Church’s Olana estate are always dramatic. Although the Hudson River overlook does not face due west from the top of the hill by the mansion, there is always wonderful color in the sky and spectacular views of the Catskill Mountains. Like Boscobel, it’s one of those Hudson Vistas that one never grows tired of! (I suppose Frederic Church didn’t tire of it either!)

Some Paintings are Like That

Posted by Jamie on June 21st, 2013

20×14, Acrylic on Arches Rough 140# watercolor paper
Price unknown, since it’s still not finished!

Some paintings almost paint themselves. They are Gift Paintings. If several of those happen in a row, you may even start to feel like you’re getting a grip on this “painting” thing. The painting above is not one of those.

Most paintings present enough challenges to me to not fall into the Gift Painting category. They are satisfying puzzles to solve, that leave me hungry for the next challenge. This painting is not one of those either.

Then there are the paintings that totally humble us. Now we’re talking about this painting! They are also tremendous growth opportunities. Whether they end up in frames or not, they become their own reward through their ability to teach us something new, and it doesn’t come easily!

This painting began one recent afternoon at Manitoga in Garrison, where I sat at the base of this massive waterfall. I have painted more waterfalls than I can count, but I didn’t count on the number of challenges this particular one would present. This series of cascades is is more like 100 waterfalls than one waterfall, and I have never painted 100 waterfalls in a single painting. Plus:
1. I had already done a painting in the morning;
2. It was hot out;
3. I was short on time;
4. I had a broken toe to contend with;
5. There were massive numbers of biting Black Flies. (Two days later, I counted 72 black fly bites on my arms and legs!)

So, why did I take on such a complex scene that afternoon? I have no idea. Not only did I take on a complex scene in a short time frame, but I had to go and do it 20 inches tall! What was I thinking?

I did what I could on location, shot a couple of reference images, and figured it would go in the large Unfinished pile at home, many of which never again see the light of day. But this one kept beckoning to me. It’s on a watercolor block, so I can’t use the rest of the block until I finish the darn thing! I pulled it out one day and decided some areas needed to be totally repainted, and some shadow areas better unified. I took out a container of white Gesso, and painted over the shadow areas that were bothering me. That way, I could rework them with transparent color, and better unify the shadow sections that I didn’t like. I put the painting away for the gesso to dry, and that was that.

Until today! It beckoned me again. I reworked some of the shadow areas, better defined some of the rocks, got some forms to turn, and resolved what I was going to do with the bottom section of the painting, even if I didn’t wrap it up yet. My daughter thinks it’s coming along, so that gives me hope. I’m thinking one more day just might do it for this one. Or not. Here’s where it stands now:

This is a battle I’d really like to win. While painting, I think about ways I could have approached this subject differently. Perhaps with a different game plan, I could have gotten to this point much sooner, without so many detours and reroutings. These paintings that make us think outside of the box, and force us to look at our subjects or techniques in a different manner, are the best learning opportunities and experiences that we have. This one may never go into a frame. It might be one of those paintings that I pull out every couple of months or years, and work with a bit more, to see what I can gain from the experience, and learn what the painting can teach me about the process.

I have paintings that have been in that pile of unfinished works for years. Every so often, I pull one out and I’m able to do what the painting needs right away. That tells me how far I’ve come, while some of the others in the pile remain an enigma, and tell me how far I have to go. I continue to let them teach me as I try to solve their mysteries. I think it’s a good idea to always keep a pile of mysteries in the studio.

One afternoon, I was walking toward my studio door when I was struck by the light shimmering on the lawn and doorway, with the surroundings in shadow. I thought it would make an interesting value study, so I returned to the spot the next day with my Golden Neutral Gray acrylics. (As I’ve explained and showed previously, these are already premixed, so they make it very convenient to do the value studies that we all know we should be doing!)

I had a tough time getting the values to show correctly in the photograph. It’s ever so much easier to adjust the highlights and shadows in a photo than it is to do midtone adjustments. It looks so much better in person! In any case, I’m quite happy with the way the actual painting turned out. I am trying to use all my willpower to leave it as it is and not glaze it with color! Perhaps I will also do a color version in the future, and definitely there will be more monochrome paintings coming too.

I posted a photo of this scene the other day with the waterfall in progress. I keep thinking it’s done, and then end up reworking sections of it. Maybe it is done now, but if not, you’ll see it posted again with revisions!

It sure does seem like “Waterfall Week” here on my blog. Actually, only two of the ones I’ve posted this week were done this week. For some reason, the others just didn’t make it up on my website until this week. However, it is true that I never seem to tire of the challenge of painting waterfalls. We’ve had tons of rain this week, and they are predicting a lot more over the next couple of days, so I think it’d be a safe bet that more waterfall paintings will be coming off my brushes in the near future!

Kaaterskill Falls in Watercolor

Kaaterskill Falls, the tallest waterfall in New York State, is one of my favorite spots to paint. It was one of the favorite spots for the Hudson River School painters as well. It’s not easy to get to the base of the falls with painting gear. Sometimes the hardest part is getting a parking space, but even if you do, it’s about a quarter mile from the lot and then about a half mile climbing up the mountainside. Without gear it’s not a hard climb, but you don’t want to do this one loaded down with equipment!

This one was done on location last summer, but for some unknown reason, it never got posted. I think I just never got it up before the camera to take the picture, so here it is at long last! Please note that this painting comes already custom-matted and with an archival backing board, so all you’ll have to do is pick out a standard 12×16″ frame for it and it’s ready to hang.

Work in Progress by the Waterfall

15×11, Pastel on Rives BFK Tan
Email me at JamieWG@aol.com if interested in this painting.

I started a large painting on paper, and while waiting for my first layer to dry, I decided to do a monochrome sketch using some Cretacolor Sepia Powder. This just arrived with my last art supply order. It looked like lots of fun and I couldn’t wait to give it a try! I started laying in tone by brushing the powder onto the surface of a pristine sheet of beautiful Rives BFK — a 100% cotton rag paper that is one of my favorite toned surfaces. It wasn’t long before I needed to work in some lights, and realized that I didn’t have a white Conte in my sketch box with the powder! Uh oh!

I remembered that I had some pastels in my car, so I figured I’d take the white from that pastel kit. Well, you know me — the color junkie! With all those gorgeous pastels in front of me, there was no way I was going to resist adding some splashes of color, and then some more. Before I knew it, I was way engrossed in creating a pastel painting instead of the monochrome sketch I’d intended as a time-filler while my other painting dried! I wasn’t all that happy with the way the other one was turning out, so I persevered for awhile with this one and really liked where it headed. I went back this morning and tweaked it a bit to finish it off. I’ll post that image as soon as I can get a photo of it.

As for the other painting, it only went from bad to worse. I went back at it again today, but couldn’t save the beast! Plein air painting can be a very humbling experience. However, I’m pleased with this one. I never would have thought to use Rives BFK for pastels, and I hadn’t initially intended to do this as a pastel piece. It turned out to be a pretty awesome pastel surface. I might even do it again on purpose sometime!

Occasionally, a painting or a sketch will go in unexpected directions due to unforeseen circumstances. When that happens, it can be disastrous. But sometimes, when we get lemons, we can make lemonade. I’m really glad that I let this become a pastel painting instead of a monochrome sketch. (And to make up for that, I did monochrome work in the afternoon.)

The Great Swamp in Rusts and Golds

This painting of a scene along the Appalachian Trail is the fourth in my Color Inspirations series. It was painted from the same reference image as the one I posted yesterday, where the Appalachian Trail goes through the Great Swamp, but with a different selection of colors. This painting has great transparency, which is what gives the sky such a luminous glow. I made sure to use transparent pigments that would maximize the effect. We don’t always end up with exactly what we were hoping for, but for me, this one did give me the effect I was after!

This paper is Arches 90# rough. The wonderful watercolor artist, David Taylor, told me that it’s a paper he likes to use from time to time, so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s not one I’d have thought to use because of its lighter weight. It certainly does need to be taped down while painting to avoid buckling, and actually, the first batch of it that I ordered was buckled when it arrived at my doorstep. Thank goodness Dick Blick is such a reputable retailer, and they replaced all the paper right away. I’m enjoying the responsiveness of this lighter paper, and can see why David finds it appealing.

This medium-size painting was done on location at Boscobel Restoration, overlooking Constitution Marsh along the bluff above the Hudson River. I’ve painted this scene so many times, so I opted for something different this time around and pulled out some Golden Airbrush paints. I used them with traditional brushes rather than an airbrush, and let the colors spatter and run, the way I love to do with watercolors. It has a wonderful transparent glow, which is exactly the effect I was after. I think I want to do more of these!

In case you’re having a “deja vu” moment, yes, I did post this painting a couple of weeks ago! My intention was to possibly work on it a bit more. I decided to go ahead and do that, so now I’m reposting it as a definitely finished piece, which is a little more refined than it was before, and I’ve deleted my previous version of the painting.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Usually when there is water to be found at a location, it becomes at least a small portion of my painting. But in this case, I was mesmerized by the beautiful light in the distance filtering through the trees, and the splotches it created along the trail. This section of the Appalachian Trail is in Pawling, New York, about a quarter mile southwest of the intersection with Route 22.

I used Golden Airbrush acrylic for most of this painting in order to make the most of the transparent glow in the distance. Nothing quite captures that effect like transparent paint on a white support!

Most of my early spring work, including this one, has already been claimed by RiverWinds Gallery in Beacon, NY. You’ll be able to see this painting and more at RiverWinds starting the Second Saturday in July. The painting can be purchased at the gallery, here through my website, or by calling RiverWinds during their regular business hours.

Quarry Pond Meditation

I started this painting on Tuesday morning, overlooking the Quarry Pond at Manitoga. It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful and serene spot, with the sounds of waterfalls and singing birds. The light on the far cliff, contrasted by the dark mass of foliage and rock in the right foreground, immediately drew my attention. I was planning to do this smallish painting as a sketch to test drive colors and composition, and then do a large version; but as usual, I got carried away and this became a full-fledged painting rather than a sketch! I tweaked it a bit in the studio today, and now I’m calling it done. I still do plan to do a large version of this scene. In fact, having done this small one, I am now even more enthusiastic about the potential of a large one. It really captures the transparent glow and value contrasts that I was after when I arrived at the location.

This painting is the latest in my experimental meanderings with acrylic paint. I love the archival integrity of acrylic. Add to that its tremendous versatility, and it is truly a medium without equal. There are so many different kinds of acrylic paints that they have the ability to mimic virtually any other media. This painting displays the transparent glow of watercolor, and the opacity of oils.

The painting was done using the Golden Acrylic Airbrush paints. No, I am not using an airbrush! I’m using them with traditional synthetic brushes. The colors I used were Hansa Yellow Medium, Diarylide Yellow, Yellow Oxide (Transparent), Red Oxide (Transparent), Quinacridone Red, Phthalo Blue (Red Shade), and Titanium White. I also used some Ultramarine Blue from the Golden Fluids line, and diluted that with their Airbrush Medium. It didn’t behave quite the same, but I was desperate for that color! I am loving the results I’m getting with these paints, as well as the process. They enable me to spatter, drip, paint transparently, mingle colors on a wet surface, and lift like watercolors. Then I can go 180 degrees in the opposite direction, and paint with great opacity, like gouache or oils. I think I’m in love!

Spring on the Swamp River

This painting was actually started over a year ago along the Appalachian Trail in Pawling, New York. I put in one day on it last spring, and intened to finish it from a photo. I did a little work in the studio with it over the winter, but decided to get back to the location to finish it instead. When I returned, I worked until the light changed. Once the sun started to come from the other direction, I had to call it a day, in spite of the fact that it still wasn’t done! A week later, I returned to the scene of the crime to finally finish the painting! I’m so pleased with the way it turned out. Since it takes so long for oils to set, you can really pump up the colors and values by working on a piece in a few sittings.

This view of the Swamp River is actually the opposite direction from the little 5×7″ painting that I posted the other day. I painted from nearly the same spot, but sat up on a bridge overlooking the river, and facing the other way.

I hadn’t signed the painting by the time I took the photo, so that’s why my name is typed across the image. That lettering does not appear on the painting, and I’ll be signing it before it gets its final varnish.

This is a day in the life of my amaryllis plant. I painted this while it was in the budding stage. I loved seeing the colors emerging from the buds, which seemed to grow and open even as I was painting. It’s amazing how quickly that happens once it starts. The morning after painting this, there were already flowers.

The Golden Airbrush paints behave very much like watercolor and gouache. “Airbrush” is such restrictive terminology for these versatile paints. They are great to use with brushes, and also with calligraphy pens. They can also be used on canvas, boards, or other supports you’d use for acrylics, and varnished and framed without glass like oils. I’ve just started working with them in the past six months or so. I’m enjoying exploring their capabilities!

My darling husband bought me flowers, so I just had to paint them! I set them into a gorgeous, old Moorcroft vase that belonged to my grand aunt, and paired them with a little yellow bird carving. I purchased the little bird directly from the sculptor at an art show in Naples, Florida several years ago. I’ve always wanted to get that into a painting and finally had my chance! I like the way the flowers pop against the dark background, and the painting has the feeling of emerging from the darkness into the light, which the photo of the painting doesn’t quite capture accurately. As usual, the painting is better than the photo. I guess that’s why many people like to have paintings!

I think this would look especially beautiful with an ivory mat and narrow, contemporary black frame. It could go into a standard size mat and frame for an 8.5×11″ size painting, photo, or document.

I love painting the Palisades section of the Hudson River. For some reason I can’t quite fathom, this is the first time I’ve painted the cliffs in a panoramic format! I really like the way the 1:2 ratio turned out. It enabled me to add trees and foliage without obscuring so much of the cliffs. I think that come spring, I need to go back with a larger panel and do another!

This was painted from one of the many gorgeous photos I was able to get during my trip to the Adirondacks this fall. We had a lot of rain during the few days I was there, but the day we arrived was absolutely stellar! I made the most of it. This was one of the spots we visited on our first day up there. This was painted on location at a favorite spot deep in the woods. Last year when I was at the Vedder Library going through sketches by Hudson River School artists BBG Stone, I came upon a sketch he’d done from this very spot! I recognized it immediately because of the shape of the huge boulder at an angle at the base of the falls, and also a rock outcropping that is just out of the view of this painting. It was very exciting for me to know that he’d been here also.

These were painted with a split primary palette of Golden Fluid Acrylics:
Hansa Yellow Opaque
Diarylide Yellow
Pyrrole Red
Quinacridone Crimson
Cerulean Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Titanium White
For the bottom painting, I also used Nickel Azo Yellow, Quinacridone Burnt Orange, and Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid to get a nice transparent glaze on the paper, then I worked into that glaze with the rest of the paints.

I couldn’t resist stopping in my tracks to paint this pathway leading to a waterfall. The fall foliage was nearly at peak, and the water gushed down the cliff face following a recent storm.

These four still lifes were done using a limited palette of Raw Sienna, Red Oxide, Prussian Blue, and Titanium White. It’s an interesting combination of colors that yields a beautifully muted color range with much depth. Unfortunately there’s some glare on the dark background, which is mostly a rich, deep green. They were done as design studies, but once I saw the four together on the page, I thought about how great they’d look together like this with a single mat and frame.

I also have another set of four, painted in the same format, but landscape paintings. You can see those here on my Hudson Valley Sketches blog. The landscape set is also for sale, for the same price. ($175 plus $5 shipping/insurance.)

This painting was done on location last week at Hudson River School Painter Frederic Church’s estate, Olana, in Hudson NY. The field glows in the morning light with oranges, greens and purples as fall approaches. This is one of my favorite spots to paint at Olana. I was able to spend a few days there last week and enjoyed every second!

This plein air painting has been done on Saunders 300 lb rough watercolor paper, and varnished so that it can be framed like an oil painting. However, I am also including a custom, acid free mat and backing board, so you’ll be able to pop it right into a standard 12×16″ frame. This vista shows the reservoir on a hot summer day, where I enjoyed the breeze under the shade of the pine trees along the shore while painting.

Due to the beautiful gloss varnish on this painting, there are some whitish glare spots on the image that are not on the painting; that’s just the light reflecting off the varnish when I took the picture!

I love the variety of painting with all types of media on a large selection of supports. But there’s nothing like the glow of transparent pigments on white paper! This painting really captures the shimmering golden fields at Frederic Church’s Olana estate. I went there in the morning and the purple flowers I’d seen just a week or two before were completely gone, replaced by bright yellow flowers blooming profusely. I took a bunch of photos before it started to rain, then headed back to the studio, where I painted this from one of the photos.

Yep, another waterfall! Spring is the best time of year to paint waterfalls. It’s not long before they either dry up during the summer, or are far less dramatic as the flow diminishes. This one was also painted out on location. It’s watercolor on 1/8 sheet of Stonehenge Fawn paper. It’s a 100% cotton rag printmaking paper — very high quality, not too much tooth, and I love painting watercolor and gouache on it.

This is one of my favorite sizes to paint. It works so well for both vertical and horizontal compositions, and allows me to tear down a page with no waste. What I end up with is not a standard frame size, so to make it easier for buyers, the price includes a custom, ivory-colored archival mat, acid free backing board, and will arrive sealed in a polybag for protection and gift-giving. You’ll be able to just buy an inexpensive, standard frame into which you can pop the already-prepared painting, or take it to your local framer and you won’t have to purchase a mat and backing board.

This painting can be purchased at auction tomorrow at 4:30 at Garrison Art Center. The painting looks far better than this photo, which was taken with my cellphone camera. The blues are not so intense and of course the painting is in focus!

I hiked up to the peak of Little Stoney Point in Cold Spring-on-Hudson this morning to do this 12×16″ oil painting for the Garrison Art Center’s famous event, Artists on Location. The painting will be auctioned tomorrow afternoon at the Art Center along with works by 75 other artists. I’m sorry about the awful photo, taken with my cellphone camera in dim room lighting after I framed and delivered the painting. I didn’t bring a better camera because I didn’t want to lug one to the top of the cliffs! But all the paintings for the event will be there for you to see in person.

The painting depicts the northern entrance to the Hudson Higlands section of the Hudson River, between Breakneck Ridge on the right, and Storm King Mountain on the left. The island on the right side is Bannerman Island, famous for the castle ruins located there and its history. The Highlands is to me the most dramatic section of the River. I was standing at the end of Little Stony Point, and the Hudson sweeps around and past as it makes its way down toward West Point. I could spend a month painting at this location and not get tired of it!

As I was finishing up the painting, a big wind gust came along and took down my entire easel. The easel broke and my paint, brushes and turp went everywhere! Fortunately, having feared the worst as the gusts got stronger, I had already removed the painting from the easel. After that, I forgot to even photograph the painting on site. It wasn’t until I had already delivered the painting that I realized I hadn’t taken a picture, so I dashed back in with my cellphone camera. What a day! But hey, any day painting is better than a day not painting!

Here’s an image of the framed painting, though I’m sorry to say that it’s not any better an image, also taken with my cellphone.

Figure Montage No 3

12×15.5″, Interference Acrylics on sealed Mi Tientes paper
SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

Every once in awhile, an experiment takes place that makes me so happy I want to sing and dance. That’s what happened here. In preparation for a life drawing session, I decided to experiment last night with some of the Golden Interference Acrylics. I’ve been using them quite a bit for my surface preparation on dark supports, but I hadn’t actually tried painting with them. I am so happy with the way this turned out. The figures almost seem to move as the light dances across the shimmery, metallic paint.

I was initially sorry I didn’t have any sketchbook pages prepared with the Golden Black Gesso. However, given the way this turned out, that was actually a good thing. I had a 12×16″ spiral pad of black Mi Tientes paper. I’d even previously sized a page of it with Matte Medium, which I cut out of the pad (hence the reason why this montage is 12×15.5″ instead of 12×16″) It was ideal for this purpose.

I worked from some photo references. That sure did make it easier in terms of selecting poses that would work in the piece. Since I always do these in open studio with a model, I am used to taking whatever pose the model gives the group, and trying to make that work within the composition. I can certainly see the benefit to doing some of these from photos for that reason, though I do prefer doing them from life.

What I was trying to find out was whether or not I’d like painting with the interference paints on a dark ground. I have to say, I like it lots! I will definitely be doing some of these on my 16×20 boards too, now that I see the results on paper.

Below is an image that you can click on to see a larger view of the painting. I might try to make a video of it later, so that you can see how it shimmers in the changing light.

I went hiking with my friend Gretchen to this spectacular waterfall. The light was perfect and conditions ideal, with record-breaking March temperatures and no bugs! I found a spot to set up my easel that was high up, next to the falls. Generally I view it from below, so it was great to find this additional vantage point.

It’s been so warm this winter that I’m getting concerned about the potential for drought. That could mean a severe waterfall shortage for my paintings too! I’m trying to get in as much water painting as possible before all the streams and creeks coming down from the mountainside run dry. Hopefully we’ll get abundant rain in April and that won’t happen, but just in case, at least I’ll have gotten in a few of them early on this season.

This is a watercolor painting from open studio life drawing last week. We had a fabulous new model. Most of the session I painted in my sketchbook, but I pulled out some nice paper for this pose.

You can also see a montage of the very quick gesture poses in my sketchbook at this link. I really like the way this experiment came out, so I’ve prepared some black supports to upgrade my materials and do more this week. Stay tuned!

This was painted yesterday at Norrie Point in Staatsburg, New York. I went prepared with a wide panel because I remembered the huge expanse of the river at this location! I realized I hadn’t painted this long format for a long time, though it happens to be one of my favorite sizes. This is a color combination I use a lot in my watercolor work, so I wanted to see how it would transition to acrylic painting. I’m liking the transparency and warmth a lot!

This was painted on location at Boscobel Restoration, on a fall day that was heavily overcast and chilly, following a night of rain. By early afternoon, the sky had brightened and skies were clearing. The heavy cloud cover continued to lift and reveal wispy clouds and unseasonably warm temperatures. Of course I couldn’t keep chasing the light all day, so I tried to freeze the moment when the sun was breaking through the clouds and casting yellow streaks on the Hudson River off in the distance.

It’s hard to convey texture in a digital image, but here’s a closeup of a section of the painting:

101012-Clearing-Skies-Over-Boscobel-detail-450

What I really enjoy about the texture in the painting is that it is not visible from afar. It’s only when you get close to the painting that you suddenly see a whole new landscape of texture on the surface!

We had a really moody day on Plum Point last week, with the sun peeking in and out of clouds and an occasional threatening-looking cloud passing overhead. This is the view looking south through the Hudson Highlands, with Storm King Mountain on the right side. You can see the cut in the mountain where Route 9W winds around it. It seems to me that whenever our painting group goes to the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, New York, most of the artists prefer to paint the high view from up behind the mansion, or to spend the day painting in the beautiful Italian Gardens there. (You can check out my gouache sketch from up behind the mansion here.) But I’m always drawn to the Bard Rock section of the property down along the shoreline of the Hudson River. There are dramatic rock outcroppings there and beautiful trees along the river’s edge. Sometimes the color of the water is just too beautiful to believe. This was one of those magical days when the warm and cool colors mingled. I found a shady spot to paint that was surrounded by strong contrasts. I hadn’t been here for a long time, and I don’t think I ever painted from this exact spot before. The tide went out quickly, revealing more and more of the rocks that were nearly all underwater when I first arrived. It was another dreamy day painting along the Hudson.

Painting at the Vanderbilt Mansion

See the finished painting here.

I had a wonderful time painting with friends at the Vanderbilt Mansion with friends. This large, old estate sits along the Hudson River in Hyde Park, and is now owned by the New York State Park System. Most of our group painted up by the mansion and in the gardens, but when I come here, I love to paint down by the river. There’s always lots of shade, a cool breeze, and interesting rocks and trees to paint along the shoreline.

The water nearly covered those rocks when I started the painting. You can see how much the tide went out since then!

The painting is too wet to get a decent photo of it now. I tried, but there was glare everywhere. I’ll have to wait for it to dry a bit before I can get a photo to post. In the meantime, you can enjoy a view of my office for the day!

Opposite the Thomas Cole house in Catskill, New York, there is a row of beautiful Victorian homes. My friend Karen and I set up to paint up on the hillside, in the cool shade on the grounds of the Thomas Cole Historic Site. Today I went to Rondout Landing in Kingston, behind the Hudson River Maritime Museum. I planned to paint the replica of Henry Hudson’s ship, the Half Moon, but it was docked in a terrible location that didn’t allow for a good view of the whole ship, or even a decent view of just the front. There was plenty to paint at that site though! I walked a little ways down the landing and found this view that I really liked.

When I finished my oil painting, I found a place where I could sketch a portion of the boat. Here is my sketch of the stern section. I’ll have to paint the Half Moon at one of its other stops as it makes its way down the Hudson. Hopefully I will find a better vantage point somewhere else.

I was so disappointed when I heard we were going to have a rainy day today. I was looking forward to getting out and painting a commission that needs to be done on location. So I decided to turn the lemons into lemonade and continue with my “Flowers on Stonehenge paper” series that I’m enjoying so much. I picked the flowers late afternoon yesterday and arranged them in the vase so that I could start painting first thing today. I’ll have to look these all up in my wildflowers book to find out what they are. I’m pretty sure the little purple ones are asters, but I don’t know about the others. The tiny yellow ones on the left are so charming! I’d like to do another painting of those in a teeny tiny vase, so they can get the attention they deserve!

This was a much larger bouquet of flowers, so I went up to 16×12 in size. It just didn’t seem possible to do it smaller than that and still have space to let those long yellow flowers extend the way they love to do. It’s what gives them such character.

I love this vase. I bought it at a silent auction years ago, and it sat on a shelf ever since. I don’t know why it didn’t make it into the studio until now, but now that it’s here, I think it will become a permanent fixture!

I’ve been wanting to paint this waterfall for such a long time! Over half of it is this beautiful rock ledge covered with the most gorgeous green moss I’ve ever seen. I finally had my opportunity when the sun broke out briefly on Saturday. I did end up having to pack up quickly in the rain and finish it up in the studio, but it was a thrill to be out there painting for awhile. As far as I know, this waterfall has no name, so I call it Mossy Falls. I’d guess it to be about 25-30 feet high.

This was painted at Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, New York. To my dismay, most of the cherry blossoms had come down in the strong winds during the week. I found this one tree that still had blooms on it, and pulled out my artistic license to add a few more.

From this vantage point at Boscobel, Constitution Marsh stretches out below, and the West Point Military Academy is on the hillside across the Hudson River. You can barely make out the buildings of West Point on the hillside in the painting.

You can stand in this spot, turn in any direction, and see a scene worthy of a painting! This is in the Platte Clove area of the Catskills, known for its steep and dangerous cliffs and dramatic waterfalls.

For some reason, the foreground rocks photographed much higher in blue and purple chroma than they are in the actual painting. I wasn’t able to dull that down without killing the luminosity in the sky.

My husband and I were out for a walk with our cameras and ran into some friends down by the river at Madam Brett Park. As we were talking, the sun streamed out from behind a cloud, and the distant gold lit up the horizon, silhouetting the deep blue mountains. What a sight! I was so glad I had my camera with me, and painted this from a photo.

This is one of my favorite painting locations in the Catskills. You can sit on the rocks for hours and hear nothing but rushing water. The water is crystal clear, and so transparent that the pool looks a lot shallower than it really is!

This painting was done with a lot of transparent pigments, a few semi-transparent, a couple of opaque pigments, and a little help from artist extraordinaire, David Dunlop. As plein air season gets underway, I’ll have to see if I can cart enough extra tubes with me to keep a transparent palette for at least part of the process. You can see how it really makes the painting glow from within.

It felt so wonderful today to have sun and warm temperatures! I headed over to Beacon to test drive my new SunEden easel setup at Tioronda Falls, in Madam Brett Park. That’s Mount Beacon in the painting. This is Fishkill Creek, very near where it empties out into the Hudson River. The falls were absolutely exquisite with all the recent rain we’ve had, and the SunEden performed quite well. It certainly doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of my Soltek, but it only weighs three and a half pounds, and can support a large canvas! It has a shelf to set down a palette (or you can use the shelf itself as a palette) and a box that clamps on to hold all my paints and brushes. It will be great for those out-of-the-way painting locations that aren’t so close to the car. Everything fits in a backpack and it is light, light, light!

I loved painting this scene. Definitely going back soon!

“First Warm Day at the Falls” might sound like a funny title for a painting that I’m posting in late autumn. This painting was actually started in the spring, on location. It needed a few touch-ups in the studio, so finally that’s been done and it’s ready to be revealed at last. It so nice to see it finally finished up. This painting will look fabulous in a warm-toned, wood frame. I have just the one!

This painting was done at Tioronda Falls in Beacon, New York. There is a beautiful park there where the Fishkill Creek empties into the Hudson River. This waterfall is conveniently located very close to the parking lot, making it an ideal painting location!

I went with a group of seven plein air painters to paint at Cooper Lake in Woodstock, New York. The lake is gorgeous, deep blue and clean, with views of the Catskill Mountains in the background. We ended up separating into two groups. Three of us went down the road and found this nice spot with a fallen tree, which added an interesting foreground element to the scene. We later found out that the other four painters had been told to leave because they’d strayed off the road, and this lake is the reservoir for the city of Kingston. Fortunately for the three of us, you are apparently permitted to paint from any public roadway, so I got to stay.

Today was the annual Artists on Location paintout for Garrison Art Center. I drove down from upstate at 5:50am with two artist friends and we decided to spend the morning painting in the beautiful waterfront park in Cold Spring on Hudson. There was a pinky glow on the horizon suring the sunrise, and when I was about half way finished with the painting, some beautiful, wispy pink clouds moved into the scene just at the right time to pop them in. This photo was taken about a half hour before finishing it, so it’s pretty close to done here. We had to deliver the completed paintings to the Art Center by 2pm, and they were all auctioned off in a live auction at 5pm.

It’s that time of year when hard frost can hit at any time up here, and that’s the end of the road for the beautiful sunflowers. When my husband told me that he saw a beautiful field of them up on Route 82 in Hudson, I just had to go check it out. I painted them this morning while they were still in full bloom. Although I’d love to get one more crack at a sunflower field this fall, it’s likely that this one is the “last call”!

The fields are starting to change color, and there are hints of reds and maroons in some of the trees. The wind was so strong today. My Soltek easel easily stood its ground, but my brushes and other supplies were blowing all over the place. The wind was a reminder that cold weather is on the way. I’m trying to get in as much plein air painting as I can before it gets too cold. The season of peak color seems to fly by so quickly, as if I wake up one morning and all the leaves are gone, and it’s freezing outside.

A group of the Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters went to Lake Minnewaska to paint last week. The white conglomerate cliffs and striking water (which varies from teal to bright blue) pull artists like magnets! There is a nice two mile or so walking path around the lake. It’s certainly one of the gems of the New York State park system.

My friend Melissa invited a group of us to paint at her family farm in Millerton, NY. It was hard to choose what to paint because there were so many beautiful scenes in this charming valley between two mountains, but the red mailbox flags against the blue house, with the country road and layers of fields, was my first choice.

I was back up in Platte Clove today, painting the exquisite waterfalls in Devil’s Kitchen. We finally got a good, long rainfall a week or so ago, and all the waterfalls have been running strongly since then.

I haven’t broken out the pastels for a really long time, and this was so much fun! Can’t wait to do more pastel work.

The new studio is coming along. Expect a studio tour here on my website in the near future!

It was a gorgeous day today, and even though I was finishing up this painting from a photo instead of on location, at least I got to do it out on the patio and enjoy the gorgeous weather! This is a scene from Poet’s Walk in Rhinebeck, New York, along the Hudson River. It’s very close to where Chelsea Clinton got married recently. The mountains on the other side of the river are the Catskills.

I enjoyed all the layers of color in this painting. They add so much depth, and it’s always a great challenge to keep so much warm color and contrast in reserve for the foreground as I work from back to front and push the distances.

I was painting this beautifully serene scene at North South Lake in the Catskill Mountains, when a bright red kayak appeared as a perfect splash of complementary color! That’s Round Top mountain in the distance, painted from a different vantage point along the lake than my usual location. I found this new spot when my husband and I went for a hike around the perimeter of the lakes last week. Usually I paint near the tip of that peninsula on the right, but this new location enables me to add that point as a nice compositional element in the painting.

This was another painting done pulled off to the side of a country road while out exploring. I love this scene and definitely want to go back to do a larger version sometime. I’ll bet it will be even more beautiful in fall, but then again, winter would be gorgeous with the red barns against the white snow. This time of year, I’m usually so tired of the green, green, green of summer; but this summer I seem to have found lots of elements to balance the greens in my paintings, and I will actually be sad to see summer come to an end.

My friend Karen and I like to drive around looking for locations to paint; then we pull off the road and set up when we find something that appeals to us both. We came upon this spot the other day that we’ve been admiring. The problem has been that there is no good, safe spot from which to paint this scene. We decided to throw caution to the wind and set up in the middle of the bridge. It’s around a hairpin turn, so we figured the traffic couldn’t move too fast there anyway, and the drivers would have plenty of time to see us. Fortunately for us, we didn’t encounter a situation where two vehicles had to be on the bridge at the same time! We made sure to only take up half the road; It’s a good thing that it’s the road less traveled! The bridge up in the distance is the New York State Thruway (I-87).

Yep, back to Hell’s Hole again in the Devil’s Kitchen area of Platte Clove to do what I seem to enjoy most these days — painting waterfalls! This eastern section of the Catskills is so loaded with waterfalls. Many of them are challenging to get to, but some are roadside and easily accessible.

This is the farm where I buy all my fresh produce. Nestled in the Hudson Valley just to the east of the escarpment of the Catskills, they have acres and acres of strawberries, corn, zucchini, and all other kinds of vegetables. The beautiful setting against the mountains is an artist’s dream, and it makes for a dramatic scene under any weather conditions. I happened to catch it this time just as a storm was getting underway. I took a picture and then painted it from the photo, under the roof of my patio in the rain.

This was painted on location yesterday overlooking the Hudson from the grounds of the beautiful Vanderbilt Mansion property in Hyde Park, New York. A group of us were painting up there behind the mansion. We just about finished our paintings when it started to rain. I was using Golden Fluid Acrylics because I just adore the pigment load and the consistency. It glides across the surface as easily as oils. If it had been any warmer and drier, I’d have switched to the slow drying Open line instead. I figured I’d probably be forced into making the change half way through, but was able to finish up with the Fluids.

This Canson board is one of my favorite painting supports for acrylic. It can be purchased in a number of different colors. I cut it to size, and although it’s not necessary, I size it twice with Golden Matte Medium diluted 20% with water. That decreases the absorbency of the surface, and the paint sits beautifully on top. Once I apply an isolation coat and varnish to the dry painting, the surface has a deep, glossy richness to it like no other, with that lovely MiTientes texture visible. I frame them just like oil paintings on hardboard or stretched canvas.

This is a plein air painting that I did in May at Garrison Landing. It needed a few minutes of tweaks in the studio before posting and still needed signing, so I had to wait until I had the Fluid Acrylics out again!

I really enjoyed doing this painting; I need to do more street scenes! I so love the serenity and natural beauty of the Hudson Valley that it’s hard to pull myself away from that in order to paint more of our contemporary and man-made environment.

Fluid acrylics are so much fun. When I first started using acrylics, I used heavy bodied paints and diluted them to a more fluid state. It was very frustrating that this would also dilute the pigment load, and the paints would go streaky on me. Then I learned that the Golden Fluid Acrylics are formulated to have a very high pigment load already in that perfect fluid state. I was in heaven! I’ve loved using these ever since. They do dry quickly, so on a warm, dry day of plein air painting, I switch to Golden OPEN. The Fluids are also perfect for underpainting because they dry so quickly. Then I can finish the painting with Golden OPEN, which gives me extended working time and stays wet on my palette. These two products are so much fun that I sometimes wonder why I ever bother with oil paints!

While driving around Amenia, New York with Tarryl last week, we came upon this wonderful hillside with cows grazing and a converted barn at the top. We pulled our cars over to the side of the road to take photos. The cows were extremely friendly and came right up to us. The owner of the house came out and told us that this cow’s name is Mary. (I don’t remember the name of the calf.)

I love these 1:2 ratio compositions, but it can be difficult to find one that works vertically for a landscape. This one gave me the perfect opportunity, with the house set up so high on the hillside, and the cows down below.

My palette for this painting was the same as yesterday’s, with the addition of Williamsburgh Cadmium Yellow Light and some RGH Transparent Yellow Oxide.

This is a painting I did some time ago. It is seasonal and has always been one of my favorite little garden/fountain paintings, so I am reposting it today.

Although this scene was an enormous challenge to paint, I think I had an even more difficult time trying to get the photo right! I can’t seem to get the dark trees in the background light enough without bleaching out the foreground flowers. This painting will be available here on my website for only a couple of weeks.

Since this scene presented so many interesting challenges, I decided to take a few extra pictures to share.

Here is a photo of the scene:

080506-tulips-by-the-fountain-scene-500.jpg

I was immediately drawn to the strong contrasts, and the L-shaped composition created by the flowers, fountain and figure. I also love painting stone walls, so it was a plus to have that in the composition as well. Fitting all this onto a 5×7 panel didn’t prove to be easy.

Here’s my pack stool and lightweight painting box. The umbrella clamp is affixed to my stool. I was using a Pittman bag, which can hold my box flat so the paint won’t shift as I change locations. My panel carrier and extra paints fit in there too, and even the umbrella.

lasdon-stool-umbrella.jpg

Here’s a closeup of the box, ready for paint. The panel is affixed to the box lid with blu-tac. It works great. The panels and paper stay put, and there are no clips or clamps obscuring parts of the painting surface. My paper towel is clipped onto the box lid to allow more room alongside the palette for paints and my sprayer.

lasdon-box-setup-500.jpg

The plastic paint storage containers were purchased in the camping section of Sports Authority. They have a rubber seal around the outside so the paint stays fresh. I find it much easier to set out paint this way, rather than having to search for a tube and open caps.

lasdon-paint-containers-600v.jpg

The box further to the back contains my standard plein air palette:
Cadmium Yellow Primrose
Pyrrole Red
Transparent Red Oxide
Phthalo Blue
Ultramarine Blue
Titanium White

The box in the front contains add-ons that I use in the figure studio. I bring it along for plein air too, just in case….It has
Naples Yellow
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Cadmium Red Light
Oxide of Chromium
Cerulean Blue Chromium hue
Permanent Alizarin
I also carry quinacridone magenta with me for these garden scenes.

080506-tulips-by-the-fountain-5×7-wip-400.jpg

Whoever said that every painting has to have an ugly stage sure knew what they were talking about. There’s mine! I toned the upper part of the painting with transparent red oxide, and painted the figures a dark, greyed blue. That way, even in the underpainting, I could judge the figures more carefully. Then I worked in the green background. I blocked in the area of strong yellow below to reserve it—-a useful tip given to me by wonderful plein air artist, Lee Haber.

From there, it was lots of fun getting the painting to emerge. I feel like my painting process doesn’t really get underway until after this block-in step is done and I have a layer of paint down. Getting this much done didn’t take all that long, but I forgot to stop and get more pictures once I got past this beginning stage. It did eventually get done.

080506-tulips-by-the-fountain-5×7-400.jpg

I started another painting later in the afternoon, but it started to rain and I had to pack up. I’ll finish it from a photo on a rainy day later in the week. I hope you’ve enjoyed these extra photos!

With the cherry blossoms gone at Boscobel Restoration, I turned my attention back to the Hudson River, and the channels weaving through Constitution Marsh. The afternoon light turned the marsh a beautiful, dark reddish color.

I used three of the new Golden OPEN Acrylic colors coming out this month for this painting: Diarylide Yellow, Quinacridone Crimson, and Prussian Blue Hue. I also added Raw Sienna and Cadmium Yellow Primrose. I love these new colors.

If you think you saw this painting before recently, it’s because you have! I posted it a couple of weeks ago, but decided to do some additional work on it. While I was painting on location, a wonderful ship went by out on the river. It was too early in the process to put it into the painting at the time, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted it in the painting. I added the ship the other day from a photo, and reworked a little of the foliage too while I was at it.

Here’s a photo of my setup and the painting with the scene, before I put in the ship. It’s always fun to see the painting and vista together!

We all scattered about the little town, painting these beautiful old buildings near the Riverfront Park. I’m looking forward to exploring more of Alvaro’s techniques and subject matter in the weeks to come!

It was so windy along the Hudson River that my easel kept blowing over! I liked these benches under the big tree, awaiting visitors. The Athens Lighthouse is visible from this vantage point, but I decided not to put it into the painting. Initially I’d thought to include it, but in the end I thought it would be a distraction.

This little stone well caught my attention as it stood out in value and texture from amidst the tall evergreens.

It was a beautiful evening on Friday along the Hudson River in Beacon, NY. My painting buddy, Sue, went with me to Long Dock after we left Boscobel, and I did this quarter sheet watercolor before sunset. Facing Cold Spring, this cluster of trees was leaning toward Breakneck Ridge, creating a wonderful composition.

I love my new Plein Air Pro watercolor easel. Since it has the little shelf, I’m thinking I can probably use it for smaller oil and acrylic paintings too, though I haven’t tried that yet. Here’s a photo of the scene and the easel:

This was painted on a gorgeous, warm spring day. I headed out to Boscobel Restoration overlooking the Hudson River in Garrison, New York, and took in the spectacular cherry blossoms there. The saturated pinks against the blue sky were intense! Going back tomorrow……

This little, old rowboat resides at the shore of my neighbor’s farm. I went on Monday to paint there. I think there are many paintings to be had at this spot! I’m looking forward to exploring this scene with the boat at least a couple more times in watercolor, and can also envision it in other mediums and seasons.

Spring Beginnings at Boscobel

Today was one of those early, overcast spring days, with the foliage just emerging, and the flowering trees starting to bud. As always, the view overlooking Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River was spectacular.

In order to maintain the limited color out in the marsh, I stuck to a two-color palette of Transparent Red Oxide and Ultramarine Blue until the very end, when I added a touch of Cadmium Yellow — just enough to mix a hint of green for the foreground shrubs and treetops.

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past couple of days looking at my photo references. Usually I set aside photos that I take that appeal to me for paintings, and place those in a separate file. From time to time, I look back through ones I did not select, and usually find many that appeal to me now, though for some reason they did not grab me at the time. This photo is one that I took a couple of years ago, but happened to stumble upon it yesterday and saw it in a new light.

I did this painting with four of the new Golden OPEN colors: Prussian Blue Hue, Cadmium Yellow Dark, Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, and Quinacridone Crimson, plus Titanium White. In the end, I also used a little Cadmium Yellow Primrose in the greens to increase the “sparkle factor”. I love these new colors! The Cadmium Yellow Dark mixes rich, warm greens. The Prussian Blue Hue is clean enough for skies, yet muted enough to not take over the painting, and mixes very deep darks (as I was hoping). The Quinacridone Crimson is going to become the new cool red on my palette. Transparent Yellow Oxide is a color I frequently use for underpainting and glazing in both oils and Golden Fluid Acrylics. I’m so glad that I have it now in OPEN as well!

I still vividly remember this bright, late afternoon at the Vanderbilt Mansion property along the Hudson River in Hyde Park, New York. It’s one of the best sunset locations that I’ve ever encountered, and one of the few parks where you can drive right to the river (though they do close the road to the river on weekends). I haven’t done any plein air painting there for a long time, but I think I will change that soon!

I posted the red oxide underpainting start of this work a few days ago. Today I finished it up in the studio. Hopefully it conveys at least a little of the magic that I feel beside this waterfall below the mountain. It is not an exact depiction of the location, but rather an attempt to capture the essence of the elements that lure me to this spot time after time. Pretty soon the foliage will be in full bloom and the scene will change dramatically, providing an opportunity to capture the vista in its newly-transformed state.
