I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

I’ve been doing a bunch of small, colorful watercolors lately. Some have been done out on location, and others in the studio during these colder or rainy days. Above are some of my favorites. The sizes range from about 3 1/2 x 5 1/2″ to 4×6″, and will arrive custom matted to 8×10″, with a backing board included. They will fit into any standard 8×10″ frame, making them perfect holiday art gifts.

This Catskills scene from North South Lake, made famous by Hudson River School artists Thomas Cole and Jasper Cropsey, is a large format painting in warm sunset colors of golds and rusts. It is from my series of works done in analogous colors, which harmonizes the palette by using only colors adjacent to one another on the color wheel. I found the warm-colored paintings of that series to be more challenging to paint in some ways, but often more rewarding too! This is one of my personal favorites from the series.

This painting was done from a photo that I took at Innisfree Garden in Millbrook NY. It’s a scene that lends itself to many different approaches in light, color, and atmosphere. In this case, I used an analogous palette of mostly yellows, golds and earthy orange tones to cast a warm glow on an impending weather event, with a path to lead the eye into the painting.

Hudson Valley Golds

This painting is from a series of small works that I did as color studies for large paintings. It was painted with many transparent and opaque layers. A scene from Innesfree Gardens provided the inspiration for the painting, though numerous liberties were taken in the translation from location to photo and then to the painting. It is so representative of the beautiful scenery that surrounds us here in the Hudson Valley.

Winter on the Hudson

Many years ago, I went sketching with a friend along the Hudson River in Newburgh. It was a cold winter day, so we found a parking lot with a river view, and sketched from our cars with the heat running! There were geese swimming in the frigid, but still open water. I always wanted to do a large painting of this scene, with the bright sunlight streaming from the south and reflecting in the water. I decided to do this painting in blues and violets to give it the cold winter feeling I had on that day, while adding the violets to keep the color harmony, yet expand the color range.

I wanted this Hudson River painting to depict the colors of a summer day on vacation, and to take me to that “happy place” with all the time in the world, and without cares. I think I captured the warm Caribbean feel I was after, while maintaining the strong sense of the Hudson that the mountains of the Hudson Highlands provide. The photo for this painting was taken out on the river near Beacon.

I did a few color studies for a large painting, and this one came out so beautifully that I decided to finish it off and offer it for sale. The colors are so much more subtle and beautiful in real life. I love this scene overlooking the Hudson River and Iona Island from Bear Mountain, and have painted it in many seasons and different mediums, at different times of day. I’ve painted it on location and in the studio. I just can’t seem to get enough of it!

Hudson Highlands in Autumn

I have painted this scene many times out on location in Beacon. It is where Fishkill Creek enters into the Hudson River at Madam Brett Park. Although beautiful in all seasons, the marsh and foliage blazes with warm color in Autumn. For that reason, I selected this scene to portray the “Red Orange” painting of my recent series, Hudson Valley Hues. The painting is currently available at RiverWinds Gallery (see link above), and will be offered at a special price only for the duration of the show.

If you think you’re having a deja vu moment, this painting is similar to the one I posted last week! I took a series of photos of the Great Blue Heron in my yard. Here he is in a more upright pose, and it is a more detailed and refined painting. This painting is all done in shades of blue. The Big Chill

This Great Blue Heron usually sticks around for the whole winter. I took a bunch of photos of him from my kitchen window, and painted him in a palette of cool winter blues, huddled against the cold. The painting developed a few small ripples in the process of wet-mounting the paper to a board after the painting was completed. With the painting hanging on the wall, you have to really look carefully to be able to even see them. With that disclosure, I am offering The Big Chill at a huge discount of more than 50%. In spite of the minor flaw, the painting is beautiful and is totally archival. It is varnished to be framed without glass, like an oil painting.

This painting began on a beautiful early fall day at Muscoot Farm. I was out with some friends looking for a spot to paint and we came upon this beautiful hillside with wildflowers and a gazebo. There were so many great vistas from this location that all three of us ended up painting from totally different vantage points and directions. I selected the view up the hill, where the path lead through fields of wildflowers and grasses in violets and deep yellow-orange hues, interspersed with bits of green. It was heaven. Here’s an image you can click on for a larger view of the painting:

I tried to make the most of the beautiful autumn days by starting as many paintings during that time as I could, even though I knew it would leave me with a huge pile to complete in the studio. After all, I’ll have all winter to do that! And believe me when I tell you that the pile is big. So, some of the paintings I post during the winter will bring you back to those warmer times when I started them out on location. We can all use a little of that warmth during the winter season! I’m not terribly fond of winter and so I don’t enjoy painting it. It’s not a memory I want to have hanging on my walls when the weather finally improves! Yet, the winter gives me that opportunity to play with new ideas, take my time finishing up the uncompleted works, and exploring other subject matter. You’ll be seeing some interesting things emerge. Stay tuned!

Sunset Memories

SOLD! Please email me at JamieWG@aol.com to inquire about a similar painting.

This is a spot that was one of Hudson River School artist Thomas Cole’s favorite places to paint. I visit here frequently at sunset with a small pochade box to paint studies and take photos. Last year, I experimented with some color palette ideas in watercolor and acrylic from many of the photos I took here. This morning I pulled out all those color studies and some of the photographs, and explored those ideas in oils. I think I feel a series coming on!

The Great Swamp in Rusts and Golds

This painting of a scene along the Appalachian Trail is the fourth in my Color Inspirations series. It was painted from the same reference image as the one I posted yesterday, where the Appalachian Trail goes through the Great Swamp, but with a different selection of colors. This painting has great transparency, which is what gives the sky such a luminous glow. I made sure to use transparent pigments that would maximize the effect. We don’t always end up with exactly what we were hoping for, but for me, this one did give me the effect I was after!

This paper is Arches 90# rough. The wonderful watercolor artist, David Taylor, told me that it’s a paper he likes to use from time to time, so I thought I’d give it a try. It’s not one I’d have thought to use because of its lighter weight. It certainly does need to be taped down while painting to avoid buckling, and actually, the first batch of it that I ordered was buckled when it arrived at my doorstep. Thank goodness Dick Blick is such a reputable retailer, and they replaced all the paper right away. I’m enjoying the responsiveness of this lighter paper, and can see why David finds it appealing.

Great Swamp with a Golden Sky

I’ve been working on some color-inspired paintings lately, and this is the third of my Color Inspirations series. This scene from the Great Swamp lent itself to a golden sky, bringing out the colors of the marsh grasses and warming up the scene. My goal with this series is not so much to portray a specific place as to create a special drama or mood, using inspiration from the scene before me and a color palette that I feel complements the scenery. The tonal values at the location become more important than the actual colors. In this case, the trees contrasted strongly with the other elements in the scene. For that reason, I felt it was an ideal composition of tonal values, while shifting the color imaginatively. I think I’ll be doing several from this reference, exploring different color possibilities.

This also happens to be another scene along the Appalachian Trail in Pawling, New York. It is close to where the trail crosses Route 22. I seem to find a lot of inspiration along the AT these days.

I am doing these Color Inspiration paintings in assorted media. This one is acrylic on paper. I will mat it like a watercolor, but the versatility of acrylic also enables me to varnish and frame them like oil paintings. Very cool!
