I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

I’ve been doing a bunch of small, colorful watercolors lately. Some have been done out on location, and others in the studio during these colder or rainy days. Above are some of my favorites. The sizes range from about 3 1/2 x 5 1/2″ to 4×6″, and will arrive custom matted to 8×10″, with a backing board included. They will fit into any standard 8×10″ frame, making them perfect holiday art gifts.

Don’t forget that my show opening is this Sunday, September 30, from 3-5pm at the Hendrick Hudson Library, 185 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose NY. Hope to see you there! North South Lake is one of my favorite painting spots for birches and atmosphere. In this painting, I got both. The Hudson River School painters also favored this location. I love the way pinks and violets play together, so I explored that interaction in this painting. You can click the image below for a larger, clearer view of the painting.

This view of Crawford Notch, New Hampshire, was painted by many of the Hudson River School artists, who traveled up to the White Mountains to take in the spectacular scenery. Saco Lake lies just north of the notch, reflecting the mountain and amplifying the drama of the setting. The white rock on the left side of the notch is called Elephant Head. You can hike up there for majestic views in all directions. When I’m able to do a larger painting of the scene, you’ll be able to see why it’s called Elephant Head! Paintings are underway of views from up there too.

Fall is just beginning here, but I still have a bunch of my summer paintings to post! If you’ve been tagging along on my blog, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve loved doing these watercolor creek paintings this year. Some have focused on reflections, some on foliage like overhanging tree limbs and branches, and this one is all about the light streaming through from the back of the painting and hitting the water. I’m going to really miss these warm summer days, standing along the stream banks with my easel. I think I’ll have to frame a few of these and hang them in my house to remind me of what it felt like!

This Hudson River School site in the Catskill Mountains is one of my favorite hike destinations. I go up there several times a year, and understand why it was also a favorite of the Hudson River School painters! This is probably destined to be my last Sunset Rock painting before the fall colors take hold.

Speaking of the Hudson River School, for those who have not gone to the Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill NY to see the Sanford Gifford show, you have until October 29 to do that. I just went back for the second time, and it’s truly a “Don’t Miss It” exhibit for those who love Hudson River School art, art history, and hiking in the Catskills. The show focuses on Gifford’s paintings done in the Catskill Mountains, and provides site information for where they were all painted too. There is also a show catalog available at the Visitor Center there.

Continuing on with my series River Arches, this rendition drops the horizon line down to feature the rising trunks of the arch, and the light streaming through the foliage in the distance. This was painted on location in the Platte Clove vicinity of the Catskill Mountains.

This Catskills scene from North South Lake, made famous by Hudson River School artists Thomas Cole and Jasper Cropsey, is a large format painting in warm sunset colors of golds and rusts. It is from my series of works done in analogous colors, which harmonizes the palette by using only colors adjacent to one another on the color wheel. I found the warm-colored paintings of that series to be more challenging to paint in some ways, but often more rewarding too! This is one of my personal favorites from the series.

I’ve painted this south-facing view, as well as the westward view, from Sunset Rock so many times, at different times of day, various seasons, and assorted atmospheric conditions. I never get tired of painting from there, or hiking there. The scene was painted by several of the Hudson River School artists; I guess they didn’t get tired of it either!

My husband and I were out hiking one day recently, and came across a stream deep in the woods with the most glowing red stream bed we’d ever seen. This one was the first of what I’m sure will be a long series of paintings from that location!

At the northeastern edge of the Catskill Mountains lies Winter Clove, home to many stunning ravines and waterfalls. This one, along the Kiskatom Creek, has a beautiful covered bridge above it, and a clear, nearly viridian-covered pool at the bottom. I went for a hike here with my husband, and had to make a return trip with my paints!

This painting of a moored boat with dramatic skies was painted from a photo I took a few years ago. While out hiking in early spring, I came upon this stream with several arched trees extending from the shorelines over the water from either side. As the creek meandered, the shoreline trees formed arches through the various planes of the scene. I took a lot of photos to do a series of these arched tree forms, and hope to return soon to paint some of them on location. They present interesting compositional opportunities focused on the arches, and reflections in the distance, and/or transparency of the water as it nears the foreground. I love these birch trees that surround North South Lake in the Catskills, which is one of the sites where the Hudson River School artists loved to visit and sketch. We went for a walk there recently on an overcast day, and the path made the perfect entry to the painting, framed by some of my favorite trees. I’ve been doing a lot more watercolor work lately. It lends itself to these atmospheric renderings and a loose approach where the paint can make its own statement. Below is an image you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

I have been wanting to paint this scene ever since I saw it for the first time a few years ago. No matter what time of day or season, this view in the Catskills is spectacular. My husband and I drove past a few weeks ago and I took some photos. During the big snowstorm last week, I started the painting; it seemed appropriate! I’d like to do a large format horizontal of this view also….someday.

Art to Go from the Hudson River Valley

Posted by Jamie on February 1st, 2017

170131 Varnished Paintings 435

Email me at JamieWG@aol.com if interested in this painting.

The other day, I varnished ten of my new Hudson River and Hudson Valley paintings. They range from scenes overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades from New York City, to Peach Lake in Brewster, and Burger Hill in Rhinebeck, up to the ledges of Sunset Rock overlooking North South Lake (beloved Hudson River School site), and the Catskill Mountains. Some of these were started on location and finished up in the studio, while others were painted from my photos and other plein air paintings. They represent much of the terrain I’ve traversed over the past six months or so, in search of the best of what the Hudson Valley has to offer my muse.

The varnishing process takes time to set up, so I like to do large batches at a time. Usually that means about 17-20 paintings. Lately I’ve worked on some larger pieces, which has lowered my production in terms of quantity. Working on those big paintings has meant that the little ones tend to hang out in the studio longer, before they get photographed, varnished, and up on my website. As the weeks go by, they get more touchups and adjustments as I see them. I think this has led to an overall increase in quality. As I look at this set of paintings now, I’m really happy with what I’ve achieved in this batch. Here’s a photo that you can click on, and you can then zoom in on specific paintings.

170131 Varnished Paintings fs

The large, framed painting of the Hudson River and Palisades is already spoken for, and out the door. (I do miss that one already! But there is a smaller version of it available among the others, and I can always do another large one for you on a commission basis.) The smaller works above it are all available and in search of new homes. If you see one that interests you, send me off an email (or comment below), and I’ll get back to you with more information. They will all be posted individually as I adjust the single images. Some of those have already been posted with prices, and are visible by going to my home page and scrolling down.

Sunset Rock was a favorite destination of many of the Hudson River School artists. It’s long been one of my own favorite locations as well. This western view overlooking North South Lake is well known, but the south-facing view is equally engaging.

Below you can see a photo of the painting in progress on location. It sometimes takes awhile for me to get paintings photographed and up on my website; in this case, the painting sold before I had a chance to post it here.

I’m fortunate to live by a lake with a great sunrise view. This was painted on a morning with a haze over the lake, creating spectacular colors as the sun came up. It glowed yellow-orange as it emerged above the tree line, casting warmth and light upon the whole scene.

I just brought this painting over to RiverWinds Gallery today, along with five others, for their grand re-opening celebration. The reception for the new show will be this Saturday, January 14, from 5-8pm. The address is 172 Main Street, Beacon NY. If you cannot make it to the opening, the gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6pm.

This painting was done from a photo that I took at Innisfree Garden in Millbrook NY. It’s a scene that lends itself to many different approaches in light, color, and atmosphere. In this case, I used an analogous palette of mostly yellows, golds and earthy orange tones to cast a warm glow on an impending weather event, with a path to lead the eye into the painting.

This painting features an expansive vista overlooking Candlewood Lake in Connecticut. There were long lake views in both directi161114-birds-eye-view-6x9-ac-600ons, and a western, sunset exposure to boot. I took so many photos when I was there, and can’t wait to do more paintings from them during the winter. I’ll return for some plein air versions when the weather warms up again. I’m calling this one Bird’s Eye View, but they could probably all have that title, with views in both directions that seem to go on forever.

This weathered pine leans over North South Lake, nestled in the Catskill Mountains. I loved its character, and the opportunity to draw in the company of friends on a beautiful day by the lake.

This drawing is one of a series of three trees, all done in the same sepia tones. One was posted yesterday, and the final one will be posted tomorrow. They can be purchased individually, or subtract 20% if you’d like to have all three to hang as a triptych. They are framed with identical ivory mats and gorgeous custom gold frames, and make a beautiful grouping in a classic style.

I love this scene and have been playing with it in various color combinations for nearly two years. There are so many ways to interpret the composition in terms of light, season, focal point, and color palette, that I can’t seem to get tired of it! It’s a view of the lake at Innisfree Gardens. This most recent rendering is in fall colors, with the late day light striking the eastern hillsides and distant mountain before sunset. Last year, my husband and I drove through the Catskills beside the Schoharie Creek. At every possible pull-off from the road, we got out and explored the views. This vantage point was one of my favorites from that expedition. I loved the way the transparency in the water made all the rock forms visible, then turned to reflections farther off. The greens from the trees on the left also cast some reflection into the water. I was awestruck by the variety of color and types of light. I think I need to do a large version of this too. It’d be awesome as a 20×30 or 24×36!

This painting is from a series of small works that I did as color studies for large paintings. It was painted with many transparent and opaque layers. A scene from Innesfree Gardens provided the inspiration for the painting, though numerous liberties were taken in the translation from location to photo and then to the painting. It is so representative of the beautiful scenery that surrounds us here in the Hudson Valley.

Over the weekend, I visited The Stone Church in Dover Plains with my husband. It was such an exciting location that I couldn’t wait to paint there. I went back today to capture this vantage point. I finished just as light started to come into the interior of the cave from above. I can see that this would be a great spot to explore from many angles, and at different times of day too. It could be my new fave painting spot!

This Great Blue Heron usually sticks around for the whole winter. I took a bunch of photos of him from my kitchen window, and painted him in a palette of cool winter blues, huddled against the cold. The painting developed a few small ripples in the process of wet-mounting the paper to a board after the painting was completed. With the painting hanging on the wall, you have to really look carefully to be able to even see them. With that disclosure, I am offering The Big Chill at a huge discount of more than 50%. In spite of the minor flaw, the painting is beautiful and is totally archival. It is varnished to be framed without glass, like an oil painting.

This fall painting was done standing along the lakeshore at the DEC North South Lake Campground. There were fisherman and kayakers, as well as changing light, especially since I had to make a return trip to finish the painting. But the biggest change of all was when a DEC work crew came to trim the foliage I was painting! The guys were so nice, and agreed to leave this foreground tree alone so that I could finish the painting. Below is an image that you can click on for a larger, clearer view of the painting:

There are several wonderful views of Croton Gorge Dam, and great vistas from the bridge at the top as well. I was in a splashy acrylic mood on this day, and let the drips and splatters become part of the painting. This was painted mostly with the Golden High Flow acrylics, which have an ink-like consistency. They form a permanent shield just like other acrylics, so that they get sealed, varnished, and framed without glass, just like oil paintings. This is one of those scenes that I had my eye on for a year or so before I had a chance to get out there and paint it. The location is very close to a dramatic waterfall, so I always ended up painting the falls instead! I went out there several days in a row, and so finally had the opportunity to sit by the quiet, meandering stream with my paints.

This is a view from Hudson River School painter Frederic Church’s homestead, Olana. It was painted on location at a spot close to where one of his studios was located on the property. The pond, Hudson River, and Catskill Mountains are all visible in the scene with the drama of the sunset. I never get tired of painting at Olana!

Driving into the Catskill Mountains through Kaaterskill Clove on Route 23a, there is a spectacular waterfall around a horseshoe bend in the road. A large sign there marks the trailhead for Kaaterskill Falls, and so many people mistakenly think this lovely cascade is the famous Kaaterskill Falls. Beautiful as it is, clearly it is not in the running for the title of the tallest waterfall in New York State, but it is certainly much easier to get to! It’s another half mile up a steep and rocky mountain trail to arrive at the base of Kaaterskill, so I can almost understand those who would rather mistake it than do the hike!

I actually don’t mind doing the hike, so when I go here, I’m always hiking all they way up to the larger falls and painting Kaaterskill. I figured it was time to give this little beauty its due, so I planned a day to paint with friends at the more diminutive (but still gorgeous) Bastion Falls. I found it a more difficult subect than Kaaterskill in spite of its smaller size, and loved both the location and the challenge.

This is one of a series of three Kaaterskill Falls paintings done on location in acrylic. It’s the tallest waterfall in New York State, and was a favorite spot for the Hudson River School artists. There is a lot of construction going on by the falls now to improve access for the public. In the short term, that has meant limiting access so that they can do the work! Fortunately, I did a bunch of paintings up there early in the season, so I don’t mind taking a little break from it now. I’m looking forward to checking out any new vantage points once the trail work is completed.
