Don’t forget that my show opening is this Sunday, September 30, from 3-5pm at the Hendrick Hudson Library, 185 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose NY. Hope to see you there! If you can’t make it, the show runs until October 28. This painting and many more recent works, including some not yet on my website, will be on display.

First Day of Summer at Olana

Posted by Jamie on June 26th, 2018

I was painting at Olana (home of Hudson River School artist Frederic Church) last week on the first day of summer. The weather was perfect and I was with good friends; what could be better?! I’d planned to paint the view from the top by the mansion, but it was closed off due to construction. So, I went to my favorite place overlooking the river, and painted there instead. There were wonderful long shadows on the ground when I started, so I made sure to get them in early, before they disappeared!

Here’s a view of just the painting:

Here I am, having a great day painting at Mohonk Mountain House during their Community Week. I took shelter from the sun and glare in one of the little “summer house” gazebos. Here’s a shot of the painting, after I got it home:

This little oil painting was done in late fall on location. My friend Trish and I hiked out to the boardwalk at Constitution Marsh to spend a gorgeous day out on the Hudson River. The property is an Audubon Preserve, and there are always eagles and interesting wildlife around. I had to pick out a few bugs and do some touchups afterwards, so it’s taken me awhile to finish it up and get it posted. The atmosphere was so quiet that day, with barely a ripple in the water and a cloudless sky. Dreamy!

I’ve been wanting to do more paintings of the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse (aka Tarrytown Lighthouse) for years, and finally got around to doing some this week. I spent two days exploring six or seven of the parks along the Hudson River around Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow to find some new vantage points and check out old ones. Now I have so many ideas for paintings that my head is spinning! This 6×8″ painting features the lighthouse, and also shows the Tappan Zee Bridge in the background, as well as the little bridge over to the lighthouse from the shore.

One thing I found out in this week’s research is that the lighthouse was originally about a half mile off shore. The shoreline was filled in for various developments, and now it’s just a footbridge away! There’s a ton of construction going on in the area now, as those old commercial developments have mostly been torn down to make way for new luxury high rise condominiums. The good news is that in the process, several gorgeous waterfront “Riverwalks” have sprung up, thanks in no small part to Scenic Hudson. Although the population density is increasing dramatically, so are the accessible views.

I had a wonderful autumn day last week painting with friends along the Hudson River. We went to Boscobel Restoration in Garrison NY, where there is a long bluff overlooking Constitution Marsh and the river. The marsh was just starting to take on that reddish autumn glow, and an enormous sailing yacht went by, providing a great focal point out in the river. This is always one of my favorite vistas to paint — especially as the marsh turns to warm colors in spring and fall.

This view of Crawford Notch, New Hampshire, was painted by many of the Hudson River School artists, who traveled up to the White Mountains to take in the spectacular scenery. Saco Lake lies just north of the notch, reflecting the mountain and amplifying the drama of the setting. The white rock on the left side of the notch is called Elephant Head. You can hike up there for majestic views in all directions. When I’m able to do a larger painting of the scene, you’ll be able to see why it’s called Elephant Head! Paintings are underway of views from up there too.

I’ve been doing a bunch of paintings from photos I took during our recent trip to New Hampshire. We took the cog railway up Mt. Washington one day (great fun!) and enjoyed the majestic views of the Presidential Range from the top. The Appalachian Trail runs along the tops of several of the mountains, following the ridge line on the journey up to Maine. I captured this view of a lone hiker on the ridge and couldn’t wait to get my brushes going on it.

Many of the Hudson River School painters traveled to the White Mountains. I visited a number of the spots where they painted on my trip, and it’s not hard to see why they were so inspired by the views they encountered!

This Hudson River School site in the Catskill Mountains is one of my favorite hike destinations. I go up there several times a year, and understand why it was also a favorite of the Hudson River School painters! This is probably destined to be my last Sunset Rock painting before the fall colors take hold.

Speaking of the Hudson River School, for those who have not gone to the Thomas Cole Historic Site in Catskill NY to see the Sanford Gifford show, you have until October 29 to do that. I just went back for the second time, and it’s truly a “Don’t Miss It” exhibit for those who love Hudson River School art, art history, and hiking in the Catskills. The show focuses on Gifford’s paintings done in the Catskill Mountains, and provides site information for where they were all painted too. There is also a show catalog available at the Visitor Center there.

Spring has certainly sprung today. The forsythia is in bloom and the temperatures are soaring! This is one of my personal favorite springtime paintings, so I thought it appropriate to pull it up to the top in celebration. Below is the original post that I wrote when I did the painting.

After braving yesterday’s cold and windy temps up on a hillside overlooking the Hudson River, I decided to opt for something more springlike today, and pulled out some of my favorite spring photo references. The red barn and forsythia really caught my eye here, and the children playing nearby were an added bonus. I remember this day at Muscoot farm like it was yesterday. I was out painting there and these adorable children (clearly budding artists) came over with their mom to look at my painting. They couldn’t wait to get home after that so that they could paint! The painting I did that day sold last spring; I’m glad to have a bunch of photos to work from to paint this barn again with the bright yellow forsythia.

My palette for this painting was Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Raw Sienna, Venetian Red, Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue. I adore these Raymar linen panels. They have wonderful texture and always seem to give a painting that extra refined touch.

Art to Go from the Hudson River Valley

170131 Varnished Paintings 435

Email me at JamieWG@aol.com if interested in this painting.

The other day, I varnished ten of my new Hudson River and Hudson Valley paintings. They range from scenes overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades from New York City, to Peach Lake in Brewster, and Burger Hill in Rhinebeck, up to the ledges of Sunset Rock overlooking North South Lake (beloved Hudson River School site), and the Catskill Mountains. Some of these were started on location and finished up in the studio, while others were painted from my photos and other plein air paintings. They represent much of the terrain I’ve traversed over the past six months or so, in search of the best of what the Hudson Valley has to offer my muse.

The varnishing process takes time to set up, so I like to do large batches at a time. Usually that means about 17-20 paintings. Lately I’ve worked on some larger pieces, which has lowered my production in terms of quantity. Working on those big paintings has meant that the little ones tend to hang out in the studio longer, before they get photographed, varnished, and up on my website. As the weeks go by, they get more touchups and adjustments as I see them. I think this has led to an overall increase in quality. As I look at this set of paintings now, I’m really happy with what I’ve achieved in this batch. Here’s a photo that you can click on, and you can then zoom in on specific paintings.

The large, framed painting of the Hudson River and Palisades is already spoken for, and out the door. (I do miss that one already! But there is a smaller version of it available among the others, and I can always do another large one for you on a commission basis.) The smaller works above it are all available and in search of new homes. If you see one that interests you, send me off an email (or comment below), and I’ll get back to you with more information. They will all be posted individually as I adjust the single images. Some of those have already been posted with prices, and are visible by going to my home page and scrolling down.

I’m fortunate to live by a lake with a great sunrise view. This was painted on a morning with a haze over the lake, creating spectacular colors as the sun came up. It glowed yellow-orange as it emerged above the tree line, casting warmth and light upon the whole scene.

I just brought this painting over to RiverWinds Gallery today, along with five others, for their grand re-opening celebration. The reception for the new show will be this Saturday, January 14, from 5-8pm. The address is 172 Main Street, Beacon NY. If you cannot make it to the opening, the gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6pm.

I had this cheery, red visitor in my yard. Cardinals are impossible to resist in any setting or season! The cherry and gold framing is included in the price of this painting, since it’s so difficult to find nice oval frames that can fit a particular painting! For these framed bird portraits, I cut the panels to fit the frames before I painted them!

It’s not often that I find a vertical composition I really like of a Boscobel scene. I usually paint that vista in a panoramic fashion, but the path of the marsh channels works well this way too. Maybe there is a new series of verticals coming! It would certainly be a different way for me to explore this landscape that I’ve been painting for so many years.

This was painted on location at Boscobel Restoration in Garrison, New York, toward the end of one of those stellar, long, summer days. The scene overlooks Constitution Marsh and the Hudson River. Helicopters were flying overhead in formation from West Point as I painted!

Last year, my husband and I drove through the Catskills beside the Schoharie Creek. At every possible pull-off from the road, we got out and explored the views. This vantage point was one of my favorites from that expedition. I loved the way the transparency in the water made all the rock forms visible, then turned to reflections farther off. The greens from the trees on the left also cast some reflection into the water. I was awestruck by the variety of color and types of light. I think I need to do a large version of this too. It’d be awesome as a 20×30 or 24×36!

This adorable Hermit Thrush was posing next to our driveway when my husband and I went out for a walk. I stopped to take pictures, and she gave me a bunch of poses, turning so that I could photograph her from every angle! She was the cutest and most cooperative bird model I ever encountered. I’m sure I’ll be doing more paintings of her!

I cut the Ampersand panels for the bird paintings into ovals with a scroll saw, to fit these cherry and gold, oval frames. The oval shape seems to suit these bird portraits perfectly. I didn’t think anybody would be able to find frames to fit, so selling them already framed makes the most sense, and means that it’s ready to hang on your wall right out of the box.

This was painted from private property overlooking the Hudson River in autumn on a hazy, overcast day. I ended up getting rained out, and finished it in the studio! I spent a magical day painting at Boscobel. The weather was ideal, and a huge buck was staring at me from the distance. (Expect to see a painting of him soon!)
