This part of the Hudson is, by far, their favorite! Thank you SO much for making this Christmas gift PERFECT."

------------------------------------------ If you haven't seen the two-DVD set, "The Impressionists", you don't know what you're missing!

    the-impressionists.jpg

I rented it from Netflix and absolutely loved it. It is an enactment of the lives of Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cezanne, Degas, and other Impressionist painters living at that time around Paris. Fascinating and eye-opening!

This large spring landscape is of the old Oak tree at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Pound Ridge, New York. Unfortunately, the tree was destroyed during a big storm. I really miss its massive presence in the landscape.

This is a scene from Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Pound Ridge, NY. This county park is over 4,700 acres of rolling fields, beautiful trees, and hillsides with dramatic vistas. This is a 5×7″ plein air painting—done on location. The sun was in and out of the clouds and it was a real challenge to catch the light!

After the Storm Along the Trout Stream

What’s with the meteorologists these days? It was supposed to be overcast and raining, but I awoke to brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures. After all the rain we’ve had lately, I figured the trout stream at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation would present some good plein air opportunities. The water was rushing over the rocks, and the spring greens were out in force.

This was my first chance to try my new 9×12″ Guerrilla Painter pochade box. I absolutely love it! I sat with the box on my lap. It’s got so much more palette space than the thumbox, and as a bonus, an standard 9×12″ disposable palette pad fits right in the box, making clean-up a snap.

You can see that by the time I was nearing the finish line on this painting, it became overcast and I lost my light:

My palette for this painting was:
Cadmium Yellow Lemon
Permanent Alizarin
Burnt Sienna
Ultramarine Blue Deep
Viridian
Titanium White

I painted at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today, admiring the subtle spring colors by the trout stream. My palette consisted of:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Pyrrole Red
Transparent Red Oxide
Raw Sienna
Cerulean Blue
French Ultramarine
Ivory Black
Viridian

I’m sure I didn’t need so many colors to portray this subtle landscape, but they were already on my palette, so I figured I’d put them to work!

This old stone barn at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation is just loaded with character. It’s a wonderful subject in any season, but of course nothing beats fall!

This 12×16 oil painting was started on location, and finished up today in the studio. It highlights the strong oranges present in the landscape in fall. Nowhere is that more apparent than on the blazing orange-red fields at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, where the brilliant tree in the foreground is lit up with additional rusty and orange tones.

This painting was done over a period of several days on location from one of my favorite painting spots at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, NY. It is a view of an old farmhouse currently occupied by one of the preserve managers. The fields turn brilliant colors starting in late summer and continuing through the fall.

On Thursday we had a very special plein air event take place. Seth Golden, from Golden Artist Colors came down from their headquarters in New Berlin, New York with the full color line of the brand new Golden OPEN Acrylics. Members and guests of Lower Hudson Valley Plein Air Painters (our local chapter of New York Plein Air Painters) were able to try this product for the first time. I’ve been using it since last August, so I was thrilled to be able to have so many of my peers give it a test drive. I helped fill palettes and answer questions for much of the day, but I did get to paint this small one along the trout stream when things settled down in the afternoon. Many, many thanks to Seth and Golden Artist Colors for this fabulous opportunity.

I’d also like to extend a special thank you to Rick Rogers and Beth Herr, Preserve Managers at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. They allowed us to reserve the Kimberly Bridge Picnic Area for this event, along the trout stream in the preserve. It was a perfect setting, with plenty of subject matter to keep our plein air crew happy, and tables for all the gear!

I was down at the beautiful trout stream at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation this morning. The sun was behind cloud cover a lot of the time, and I tried to catch the light as it emerged occasionally, dotting the trees and foliage with glimmering greens. There was still some beautiful spring color on this foreground tree.

Here’s a photo of my setup and painting, with the sun behind the clouds.

When I turned around and faced upstream, there was another gorgeous view! I’ll have to go back soon to catch that one.

Many thanks to everybody who came out to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation today for our second show reception and to see us paint! The building with the gallery where our show is has a nice view of the little “toll booth” on the preserve where the parking fees are collected. The trees beyond were at peak fall performance, and the fields were ablaze with pink grasses. It provided the perfect fall subject to paint while chatting with visitors to the show.

You’ll see this painting and many others that were done at the preserve, plus a couple of others to constitute the “Plus” part of the title “Plein Air Plus”!

I’ve been so busy painting that I haven’t had a chance to photograph work and post! I just got home from the beautiful Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. The field grasses are glowing red, some of the leaves are starting to turn, and every view there was simply stunning. This is the old farmhouse on the property that now houses the offices and one of the galleries.

This is another plein air painting from Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. It was done over a period of several days’ painting on location, and a little studio time as well. This scene was painted from the same location as “Brenda’s House”, facing a different direction. I love that spot!

This painting was done mostly en plein air (on location) at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, and just needed a little time in the studio to finish it off. I pulled it out today to put on the final touches. Now it’s ready for a new home!

I painted this yesterday morning at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Pound Ridge, New York. It was a beautiful, clear summer morning before the heat struck, and the tree and path were lit up like Christmas bulbs.

It was a gorgeous fall day at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation when I painted this on location, “en plein air”. One of the preserve managers lives in the house at the bottom of this hill. The red fall fields and views of the surrounding hills make this one of my favorite spots on the 4700 acre property. There is a paintable scene in every direction! They recently put in the bench by the tree, providing weary hikers with a perfect resting spot to view the serene landscape.

This is a plein air oil painting of one of the roads that winds through the magnificent 4700 acre Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Pound Ridge, NY. The fields, streams, and beautiful trees on the preserve grounds make it one of my favorite painting locations.
